Mountains
03/16/2003 06:01 AMDavid was one
of two best men at our wedding three years ago. He and I used to go
hillwalking in Scotland most weekends about 10 years ago, he was
always the 'expert' between us, I was always the kind of guy who would
ask "How much further?", a question to which David would almost always
lie about when answering.
But the thing about mountains is
the view from the top almost always makes up for the feeling you get
on the way up, the feeling like you just punctured a lung. A bit like
life. David climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania a month ago, a
recent lifetime ambition of his and this is him near the summit. Looks
like it was worth it.

shut my stupid Hollywood liberal mouth and move to France.
I'm not planning any relocation, or any self-censorship in the near
future, so If you're one of those readers, I kindly advise you to go

Ian Haig is an Australian
geek pervert artist who makes wacky,
futuristic sex toys from used tech stuff: discarded vacuum cleaners,
food processors, and the like. Many of the passers-by who wandered
into his booth at the recent
Erotica LA expo assumed the
devices were intended to be used. A scary prospect, given their
appearance, but some people will get off to just about anything.
Thankfully, Haig makes the devices for observation only. Think of it
as socio-sexual nerdist commentary, with tongue planted firmly in
cheek. And just be grateful nobody's trying to stick one of these up
your nether-regions.
I shot a couple of photographs of Mr. Haig and his "Futurotica" tools
at Erotica LA: one,
two.

breezes of black freedom rustled across this country, Danny and

their children. A lift out of this dusty township into one of the lush
Johannesburg suburbs reserved for whites. And, maybe, a little more
respect.
