now
officially in Iraq. This is classic Al Qaeda:
Gua
rdian. The attack started at 7pm when a car bomb rammed
one corner of the complex, followed by rocket-propelled grenades,
mortars and small-arms fire. It appeared to be a feint because when
guards scrambled to respond a second car bomb blew up at an opposite
corner, again followed by a hail of bullets and bombs.
Let's hope that they don't attempt an assault like this on major
infrastructure. The damage to high value equipment (special high
capacity turbines and pumps) would be catastrophic.

Who are you calling stinking?
Who are you calling stinking?
08/21/2004 01:48 AMThe offline reader in the house ran across a mention of a cheese in
the latest New Yorker and asked me to Google it. The first result,
from The Teddington Cheese Online, British and continental
cheesemongers: Stinking Bishop is said to be derived from a cheese
once made by Cistercian monks in the village of Dymock. Monks have
always been associated with the production of 'washed rind' cheeses.
These are cheeses which are washed in a variety of liquids. They are
generally full-flavoured with lively aromas. Stinking Bishop is no
exception and uses perry as its wash. It has a sticky yellow-orange
rind and smells of old socks. The paste is soft and creamy, the
flavour is delicious and, although full and distinctive, it is not
quite as pungent as the odour may imply! At certain times of year the
paste becomes firmer and slightly crumbly. The cheese is similar to
the famous French Epoisses which has been banned from the public
transport system in Paris. In fact, at a recent cheese show in France
they were amazed to discover that Stinking Bishop was made in England.
The cheese takes its name from the variety of pear used to make the
washing solution. Stinking Bishop pears are one of over 100 varieties
which are grown on the Gloucestershire-Herefordshire border. While
this was never part of the family lore, Stinking Bishop was
Teddington's Best New Cheese in 2003. If you are interesting in trying
some, a 2 kilo cheese will run you about 42 pounds, plus shipping.
Somehow, having one's name associated with a cheese with the aroma of
old socks similar to a cheese that has been banned from the Paris
Metro seems appropriate for someone who had to be dissuaded from
naming his first-born child after his favorite cheese of the time,
Cotswold, and whose favorite store is the Cheeseboard....

01/16/2004 11:02 AMAssessing iLife 04, David Pogue writes in the New York Times, Each
program in the updated suite (except iTunes) offers about a dozen
enhancements. For example, the new iMovie offers video trimming with
an undo feature right in the storyboard strip. The iDVD program
introduces 20 new professional-looking templates for your DVD menu
screens, and can now fit two hours of amazing-looking video onto a
disc. For iPhoto 4, the chief improvement is speed, enough to handle
25,000 photos per collection without bogging down. But iLife 04 (for
the Mac OS X operating system) also includes a new program called
GarageBand. Its designed to let people with even the feeblest musical
talent, or even musical interest, create professional-sounding digital
recordings. [Jan 15]

Panasonic R3 Review
Panasonic R3 Review
08/03/2004 10:50 AM
One of the great things working at Gizmodo has allowed me to
do is to get my hands on a whole range of gadgetry that I probably
wouldn't have been able to play around with otherwise. Since I work
from home, each ring of the doorbell means there's probably something
new coming, so it's a little like Christmas, except when I return the
gifts nobody gets pissy. But despite the joy of opening up all the
gadgets and trying them out, most of them -- especially the laptops --
end up being disappointing, and I'm rarely too upset to send them back
to the vendor and manufacturer.
Not so with the Panasonic R3, a machine so well put-together that I
actually considered buying one for my own personal use, and if it
didn't cost twice that of my budget (importers are selling it for
around $2800 for a fully-spec'd out unit), I probably would have. What
makes the R3 the hands-down best sub-notebook I've ever used? Well,
for starters, it actually usable.

SweepEZE Review
SweepEZE Review
08/08/2004 03:30 PM
First of
all, the name is horrid. It might not be so bad if searching for
"sweep ez" on Google didn't turn up a different product altogether,
but it's not like 'SweepEZE' is that strong to begin with. That is, of
course, presuming that it is pronounced "Sweep Easy" and not "Sweep
Easy E," in which any appeal to the hip-hop crowd is probably
mitigated by the uncomfortable image of using an automatic vacuum to
sweep up E's cremains. So I'm thinking Sweep Easy is what we're
working with here.
I had a Roomba in here last week, reviewing it for another
publication, which was actually the first time I'd had one of the
robot vacs in my home. I liked it -- I mean, how could you not, with
all the bleeps and whoops -- but I don't think I'll be dropping $250
on one quite yet. The main issue was simply that for all its
greatness, it kept choking on rug fringe and my girlfriend's panties
(my panties were too larger to be inhaled, thankfully), so the
"automatic" part of the thing became entirely too hands-on. So back to
the broom I went.

Gmail review
Gmail review
04/11/2004 05:14 PMI don't know if it's due to the increased pressure on spammers or
what, but since I put the post up Friday night begging for spam I've
only gotten one spam email. It showed up about 5 hours after the post
was up and I haven't gotten anything since. It didn't flag it as spam,
which I assume is a feature Google will be developing more as time
goes on (or perhaps auto-recognition of spam isn't turned on yet). A
lot of friends have imported spam to see if gmail would auto-flag it
and no one seems to have tripped any spam filters yet. Oh, the spam
was also in Chinese, which gmail didn't do such a hot job displaying,
but I'm sure they're still working the unicode bugs out in the
beta.
update: apparently the spam filters are turned on
and working well, because checking my empty spam folder this sunday
afternoon, I found three Nigerian 419 scams, automatically filtered
into the spam folder. Cool!
I can say that after using gmail for a few days I finally get what
everyone is raving about. On first glance there's nothing impressive
there. To see what it is capable of doing well, you have to
use it: get a few email discussions going with folks and the
more you use it the more obvious the benefits become. I bet you could
say the same thing about blogging. Show a blog or the Blogger.com app
to someone that has never seen it or heard of blogging. I'm sure
they'd dismiss it as nothing special, one page being some sort of
boring public diary, while the app itself is just a giant form and a
button marked "post and publish", whatever that means.
Gmail is pretty incredible about tracking discussions. I've tried
several email packages that offer threading and gmail's is simpler and
more straightforward. It automatically trims replies and shows email
threads as top-down discussions, so it's easy to keep track of where
people are in a discussion. Replying to email is really easy, you just
start typing in the textarea below a message and it automatically
starts a response.
Gmail relies on the universal inbox with good searching and flags.
A lot of email power users I know have no filters of any kind,
prefering everything to drop into the inbox with custom quick searches
to find stuff and generous use of the flag message command. It takes a
little getting used to if you've been using filters for a long
time.
Everyone's raving about the keyboard shortcuts, but I haven't
gotten to use them much. I assume that's a power user feature I'll
pick up eventually. So far I've been impressed by email address
auto-completion. That's something I've never seen in a web app before
and it's quite a time-saver. As I get more familiar with it, I hope to
be able to navigate all my mail with simple keystrokes.
I think Google's really got something amazing here. It's a useful
app that feels almost like desktop software, the storage means you
never have to delete anything, and the simple flags and searching in a
threaded inbox is both a power users and new users dream setup. As
this develops along, I just might convert over to it from pop and imap
based accounts.

Review: VMware 4.5.2
09/15/2004 01:47 PMVirtual machine software allows you to run one operating system (and
its applications) from within the environment of another. For years
the most recognized name in virtual machine software for the x86
architecture has been VMware, whose eponymous industry-leading product
supports a wide variety of guest operating systems. Recently EMC Corp.
bought VMware, and has since released VMware Workstation 4.5 for $199.
The most recent release is 4.5.2, which adds 64-bit host operating
system support. There isn't much that VMware Workstation can't do,
except perhaps achieve the level of performance that a genuine
installation of the guest operating system enjoys.
