An EETimes article describes the use of a Linux-based Gumstix board as the controller of a UAV based on a model airplane. Owen Holland of the University of Essex doesn't have just one UAV in mind, he's planning on building a swarm of them. We've mentioned the swarm aspect of this project, called Gridswarm, in a previous post. EETimes focuses on the use of the Gumstix controller and Linux to create a sort of flying Beowulf cluster. The article also talks quite a bit about Gumstix and its founder, Gordon Kruberg who has worked on robotics projects for a long time.

Robotics: Grow Up!

Robotics: Grow Up! 06/17/2005 07:12 PM
Lance Ulanoff of PC Magazine says, "Robotics: Grow Up!" and then tells the robotics industry to gets its act together. Lance does a great job in bringing to light what's wrong with the robotics industry by recollecting his experiences with a recent robotics trade show. Sadly, a lot of his points are completely correct. The robotics industry appears to be mired in myopic, over- schooled robotic geeks making piddly wall-detection robots that no one wants nor can they sell. His solution? Simplify your robot and run a cost-benefit analysis to see if it will sell. He says the Roomba meets that cost-benefit criterion. Check out the article to find out more about Lance's interesting observations.

Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics

Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics 02/01/2005 10:05 PM
IBM DeveloperWorks recently posted an article titled, "Migrating from x86 to PowerPC: Robots and networked applications". The article compares the PowerPC (or "Power Architecture" as IBM prefers to call it these days) to traditional Intel x86 and ARM processors. Migrating from one of these architectures to another is actually not too difficult if the software is based on Linux which runs well on all three platforms. Ultra-cheap methods of getting started with PowerPCs are mentioned, such as cannibalizing a Nintendo GameCube console or using a Kuro Box. The author, Lewin A. R. W. Edwards, has published a book with more information on the topic, called A Cookbook for Open-Source Robotics and Process Control.

Robotics and the Meaning of Life

Robotics and the Meaning of Life 07/20/2004 11:18 AM
The Open University in the UK, has found a practical use for Asimov's robot stories. They're being used as part of a robotics class, called Robotics and the Meaning of Life: a practical guide to things that think. The Laws of Robotics are considered in terms of real control architectures such as subsumption and on the practicality of using them to design safe robots. Asimov's Laws are just one part of a larger course that reviews the history and state of the art in robotics from R.U.R. and the Turing Test to Moore's law. Students get hands-on experience using a Lego Mindstorms compatible robotics simulator called OU-Robotlab. Required reading for the course includes Asimov's I, Robot, and Ruth Aylett's Robots: Bringing Intelligent Machines to Life.

White Box Robotics Upgrades 04/13/2005 11:07 AM

WHITEBOX.jpgWe’ve talked about White Box Robotics before, but now they’re releasing an advanced robot that is not just a PC case with wheels. The company is teaming up with Frontline Robotics in order to add advanced navigation and sound/video recognition functionality to their barebones PC-BOT. The 9-series can hold Mini-ITX motherboard, laptop hard and optical drives, as well as a few webcams and whatever else you can stuff into its bays.

There are going to be two flavors released May 10, 2005: a hobbyist system that has full motion and vision functionality and a commercial version that allows the 9-series to guard RFID-tagged objects and swarm on intruders. We’re waiting, as always, for the buzzsaw attachment.

RadioShack's Vex robotics system

RadioShack's Vex robotics system 04/05/2005 07:03 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Vex-2 Today, Sam Mahserjian, a marketing manager for RadioShack, came by today to show me the new Vex robotics design system. I don't know much about hobby robotics, but I was really impressed by what I saw here.

The $300 kit, which is already starting to go on sale at RadioShack retail stores, has wheels, spin motors, gears, a programmable microcontroller, servos, a radio receiver, a 6-channel radio transmitter, and tons of Erector-set style hardware for building robots. I like the fact that you are encouraged to cut and bend the metal structural pieces to build you bots. They'll be selling sensors and effectors in the coming months, and the platform will be open enough that lead users will be able to develop and sell aftermarket sensors and components for it.

I want to find out what my garage roboticist buddy, Gareth Branwyn thinks of Vex. I'm going to ask him to write about it for Make.

Thinking Robotics for the Real World

Thinking Robotics for the Real World 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
IST has published a new article on the Bayesian Inspired Brain and Artefacts project (BIBA), which is part of NEURO-iT, a European Union Future and Emerging Technologies Initiative. The goal of BIBA is to produce artefacts that are capable of using Bayesian probabilistic logic to "understand and implement life-like behavioral coordination". To state their goal in more understandable terms, they intend to make robots that can act on incomplete data just like humans and other animals can. To this end they have constructed BIBA Bot, a robot equipped with cameras, a SICK LMS and IR sensors. BIBA Bot will initially demonstrate insect-level intelligence similar to that of an ant but researcher hope to eventually achieve mammal-level intelligence equal to that of a dog.

The documentation has been reordered in two major manuals to improve transparency. The State Machine and Program script languages have been unified, allowing the expression of far more powerful state machines. The framework has been extended to provide aperiodic task implementations. The Control Kernel API has been simplified, and various script commands have been added.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

The robot heart of software

The robot heart of software 07/19/2004 02:47 PM
Isaac Asimov was one of the science fiction authors whose works I avidly consumed when I was in my early adolescence, and though even then I could tell that his writing lacked a certain level of nuance and style, I loved it for its cleverness and its imagination. Standing at the podium at science fiction conventions, expounding on any subject under the sun, he was like a polymath Woody Allen with the neurosis circuits disabled, and his optimistic rationalism -- even in the 1970s, an era during which optimism was hard to make credible -- was infectious. (Read Cory Doctorow's apprecia tion of Asimov in Wired for more.)

So I don't think I'll be able to bear going to see the new movie "inspired by" his "I, Robot" stories -- those inventive chestnuts about what happens when robots programmed with "the three laws of robotics" tangle with the chaos of human affairs. (Chris Suellentrop in Slate offers an overview of how the movie betrays Asimov that makes me feel my decision is completely logical.) But I was glad to read this editorial in the Sunday New York Times, which thoughtfully nailed exactly what made these stories such fun:

Each of the stories in "I, Robot" works out a problem in the application of these laws, usually caused by an unforeseen implication or contradiction. Asimov's robots are perfectly logical, and therefore all the real problems are caused by humans, who are shockingly unaware of the way their intentions and emotions run counter to logic. What look like manufacturing flaws in the robots nearly always turn out to be faults in the way a command was articulated. Humans, it turns out, are mainly good at bossing other humans around. Our computers remind us of this every day.

The "I, Robot" stories, in other words, are exercises in logical debugging that happen to take the form of miniature mysteries.

Saying "the real problems are caused by humans" is, of course, awfully close to saying, "It's the user's fault!" -- an excuse that conscientious software developers and designers shun. Yet, as I dig deeper into work on my book about software, I'm learning a lot more about exactly how hard it is to make the absolute logic of computing serve the messy ambiguities of human desire, when all the pressure of the undertaking is to make things work the other way -- to force us human beings to conform to the rigorous precision of machines. Asimov's wonderful stories pre-imagined this dilemma for us. Maybe someday he'll find a filmmaker who can do his particular imagination justice.

Robot Sex

Robot Sex 05/06/2004 05:17 PM
Simson Garfinkel has written a new Technology Review article on the subject of Robot Sex - not sex as in robot procreation but as in robot gender. Is your robot a male or female? It turns out Honda thinks Asimo is a male and consistently refers to it as "he". The Roomba, on the other hand, is female according to the author. The article also mentions the Neiman Marcus his & her robots which included a male and female robot. There's a related Slashdot discussion.

Will Smith has one hot bod, but is that enough to overcome this futuristic flick's edifice complex?

It's been a while since we mentioned Hans Moravec but a new Scientific American article turns out to be just what we needed. The article gives an update on his company, Seegrid Corporation, and the robot vision system they've been developing. Along the way he talks about the growth of raw computing power from the bacterium-level ENIAC to the modern guppy-level desktop PC.

Wow Robot KHR-1

Wow Robot KHR-1 07/07/2004 08:04 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/khr01.jpg" alt="khr01.jpg image" width="141" height="250" class="borderyes" border="0" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="15"/>I don't know everything about this $1,450 'KHR-1' kit from Korean firm Wow Robot, but just from watching the video I can put together that this little humanoid bot can kick (soccer-style), shuffle step, pick itself up off the floor, and assume any number of badass fighting poses. All 17 different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our species' ultimate destruction, you know, on the side, the Wow Robot is a lot of cybernetic doom for not a lot of cash. (Thanks, Soonkack!)

I not Robot

Scott Rosenberg cites the NY Time's nailing of what's so wonderful about the original I, Robot stories, and then adds his own contemplations. Unlike Scott, though, I'm going to see the movie. I think of it as meeting someone named Abe Lincoln. Just a coincidence....
