06/24/2005 08:54 PMLast time out I spoke about smaller, more tightly focused, industry
events (conferences, trade shows, user group meetings, etc.). All of
that reminded me to mention something that occurred at the Gartner IT
Summit in Washington, D.C. earlier this month. At that conference,
Computer Associates announced its eTrust Identity and Access
Management (IAM) Toolkit. While it's aimed at commercial developers,
in-house programmers might benefit more from this release.

Quicksilver
Quicksilver
04/09/2004 04:08 PMI found out about Quicksilver via Ted Leung a couple of days ago, and it's already
become an indispensable part of my OS X desktop. On the surface,
Quicksilver is very similar to LaunchBar which I'd
tried and liked but not enough to justify the price tag. LaunchBar
lets you launch any application on your system by hitting CMD+space
and typing enough of the name to highlight the application you want.
Quicksilver takes the same idea but expands it to cover address book
entries, iTunes playlists, documents, bookmarks and more. It's
incredibly slick, highly configurable and doesn't cost a penny.
It's also being blogged to death at the moment, but it's so good it
really deserves the attention. See also Todd Dominey, Jon Hicks, Dan Dickinson's useful tutorial and the cast of Technorati and Feedster.

Evolve Custom Controls in ASP.NET
Evolve Custom Controls in ASP.NET
12/17/2003 12:18 AMASP.NET's support for Web controls provides an excellent way to
package up commonly used behaviors and deploy them to other
developers. But when should you build a control, and when should you
just add the behavior to a Web form directly? This article examines
this issue, and steps through the evolution of a control from behavior
on a Web form to full-fledged control.
Longhorn: Controls and XAML
Longhorn: Controls and XAML
12/18/2003 12:58 AMLonghorn platform applications typically consist of an Application
object and a set of user interface pages that you write in a
declarative markup language called XAML.
The Application object is a singleton and persists throughout the
lifetime of the application. It allows your application logic to
handle top-level events and share code and state among pages. The
Application object also determines whether the application is a single
window application or a navigation application.
You typically write each user interface page using a dialect of XML
named Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML). Each page
consists of XAML elements, text nodes, and other components organized
in a hierarchical tree. The hierarchical relationship of these
components determines how the page renders and behaves.
You can also consider a XAML page to be a description of an object
model. When the runtime creates the page, it instantiates each of the
elements and nodes described in the XAML document and creates an
equivalent object model in memory. You can manipulate this object
model programmatically—for example, you can add and remove elements
and nodes to cause the page to render and behave differently.

Still, it won't be long before we'll be able to watch paint dry in

The Return Of iSmell - How To Sniff Out
A Bad Idea
02/19/2004 12:45 PMFinal damning evidence that the internet bubble is back: some of the
most ridiculous ideas are coming back. When Real Networks (back when
they were Progressive Networks) first came out with Real Audio in the
mid-90s, someone put up a fake site for "RealSmell", which joked about
the ability to smell the internet with special scents being sent over
your internet connection. It was a joke, but it didn't take long for
one company, DigiScents, to
actually
pitch such a product - bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase
"that website stinks." It should be no surprise at all that
DigiScents
died a quick death, but unfortunately the idea lives on. Apparently a
British ISP is getting ready to offer
an internet
based "scent dome" that will let you download smells for your
computer. Here's the best part: for the privilege of letting you
smell the internet (mmmm), they plan to charge you about
$475.
Update: The BBC has an article with
more
details and pictures (but, sorry, no smells).
