Syntax Olevia LT42HVi

Syntax Olevia LT42HVi 04/05/2005 07:43 PM

LT42HVi_.jpgSyntax is preparing to launch another Olevia flat-screen LCD television, this one a 42-inch widescreen with a 1,366 by 768 pixel resolution and an 8ms response time (pretty decent, as these things go). The biggest thing, though, is that it's Syntax's first HDTV with a built-in ATSC and HDMI tuner, meaning it's effectively a plug-and-play solution (previous models required an external tuner). Expect to see the LT42HVi in June for around $3,700.

I like the black bezel, too. It's definitely nicer looking than the old silver models.

07/14/2004 09:59 AM

olevia_lcd_tv_20.jpg imageSyntax Groups has announced a new 20-inch version of its Olevia LCD TV, which while not the most attractive piece of hardware, does continue the Olevias' tradition of including a VGA connection for use with PCs -- something that should be, but often isn't, standard on an LCD television. Sure, a 20-inch monitor with a resolution of only 800 by 600 isn't going to blow anyone's socks off, but if you're going to drop $700 on what is essentially a monitor, it's nice to have the option to use it as you please.

Olevia has also announced an upcoming 32-inch television with a low-response time to help alleviate image blurring (16ms) and a more reasonable 1366 by 768 resolution.

Full press release after the jump.

Syntax Olevia 30-Inch LCD TV Reviewed

Syntax Olevia 30-Inch LCD TV Reviewed 09/07/2004 09:04 AM

syntax_30_lcdmonitor2.jpg imageExtremeTech gives a very positive review to Syntax's Olevia TV, a 30-inch LCD flat-panel that can be had for as low as $1,700. While it has a few quirky cut-corners, like only one of the two available inputs accepting progressive scan signals and an oddly sized 15:9 screen, overall it looks like an excellent piece of hardware for the money. If I weren't so dead set on a DLP projector at this point, I'd certainly consider one myself (the thought of playing games on a 1,280 by 768 pixel 30-inch screen with 16ms response time is very appealing).

Oh, and you can remove those 10-watt speakers from the side if you aren't using them, too, which will make it even more space-saving.

The amazing world of my French class

The amazing world of my French class 04/07/2005 10:43 AM
On the very first day of French class, Madame spent the good part of our first hour together having everyone state their name, where they were from, what they did, and what hobbies and/or activites they enjoyed. I was surprised (and relieved) to discover that I was the only American. And in fact, one of only two North Americans! I tried to jot down as best I could everyone's name and hometown. Roughly here's the summary by country: America (1) me! Brazil (3) China (5) Columbia (1) Japan (3) Korea (1) México (1) Poland (1) Russia (2) Spain (1) And what's even more interesting are the cities the group represents; the list reads like a "Great Cities of the World." Beijing, Moscow, México City, São Paolo, Shanghai, Tokyo...And of course, we're all in Paris learning French. It's pretty amazing. Also what's even more amazing is our teacher, who seems to be able to speak nearly all the languages of her students. Sometimes she'll translate something to English or Spanish (which today tripped up one of the Chinese students, who started to ask about a word and the teacher said, "No, that's Spanish!"), when she isn't using French to define things. But she also cracked some joke in Chinese that got the Chinese students chuckling. And yesterday she surprised us all when she went to the board and started writing in Russian! Madame le professeur est incroyable!

A Theory of Global Capitalism -
Production, Class and State in a
Transnational World
07/16/2004 09:54 PM
Globalization is a topic surrounded by controversy and contention, as evidenced by the numerous studies of it and the many political movements both for and against it. Whilst there is little agreement on the nature of globalization, it is generally accepted that the world is going through a period of increasing change and growing interconnection. Do these changes have historical precedent or do they represent a qualitatively new process? Are these changes benefical to society or detrimental? Which groups benefit from these changes and which groups are threatened? Are these changes inevitable or are other alternatives possible? These are some of the questions addressed by William I. Robinson's A Theory of Global Capitalism.
