03/19/2003 10:44 PMGLE is a library of C functions that draw extruded surfaces, including
surfaces of revolution, sweeps, tubes, polycones, polycylinders and
helicoids. GLE uses the OpenGL(R) API to perform the actual rendering.
The new version 3.1.0 includes new varients of
existing functions that allow alpha-blending (transparency)
to be used. Any subroutines that used to take RGB
arguments now have analogous *_c4f() versions that
take RGBA (alpha) colors. A simple demo showing
alpha transparency can be found in the examples/alpha.c
file.

Hello, Future. I
believe we've met before, in the past. nVidia has announced SLI for
the GeForce 6800 series of PCI Express video cards. What does that
mean for you, the already broke-ass gamer? Well, if you buy one of the
new, expensive Intel motherboards with the Tumwater chipset, you can
connect two of Nvidia's top-end, $500 video cards together via a
"Scalable Link Interface" MIO port, harnessing the power of both cards
simultaneously to render game graphics. It won't be twice as fast; the
received wisdom is around 50 percent faster than a single card,
although Nvidia is claiming up to 90 percent faster frame rates in
some situations.
Although it might be easy to brush off SLI as a toy for rich gamers
who can drop $5,000 on a gaming rig without a second thought (and
you'd be right, at the moment), in the near future the SLI will offer
a handy way to boost the performance of your existing card -- just
toss another one in there and go. Unfortunately, if history is any
reference, by the time a second 6800 becomes affordable, buying a
whole new, next-generation video card is probably a better option.
No word if this is the same technology that Alienware was touting
around E3. It would certainly make more sense if it were, as Alienware
isn't exactly known for pioneering cutting edge video hardware
solutions. Looking at the pictures of Alienware's solution, the
interconnects do look different, so maybe they figured out some magic
of their own after all.

Finally we have some clarity to that whole PSX
production debacle from a few weeks
back. Sony has announced two new PSX models: the 250GB "DESR-7700"
and 160GB "DESR-5700." Both are set to go on sale on April 15th in
Japan with an interesting new feature: the ability to encode video in
the PSP's video format. Unfortunately, this new feature is rendered
almost entirely useless by the PSX's shitty re-encoding process:
768kbps video re-encodes at 20% of realtime, and 384kbps at 25%
realtime. The 250GB model has a price tag of 80,000 yen and the 160GB
model 60,000 yen; but I have a hard time believing adding a new
"feature" as slow as this one will convince anyone to buy the damn
things.

Creative's announced that
their newest USB Sound Blaster Audigy will include video editing
capabilities, including hardware encoding and THX Certified 24-bit
music playback in as high as 7.1 surround sound. The device lets you
connect camcorders, TVs, VCRs and whatever else you can think of
through its DV, S-Video, and composite video ins and outs, analog and
digital audio in and out and also its built-in 4-port USB hub. Content
editing using the device (which includes video editing software) can
be converted back to its original source and played back on a TV or
VCR. Perhaps recognizing that onboard audio solutions are knocking on
Creative's sound processing door, this is an interesting step for
Creative to take in diversifying their product line. Available later
this year for $385.

Ladies love the
gadgets, it's true. This article from Keloland has some interesting
statistics and quotes regarding the increasing purchasing power of
female shoppers, and the degree to which they are turning that power
towards electronics. While not as many women surveyed feel as
comfortable as men with new gadgets, the disparity isn't a large as
some might think -- almost half of the women surveyed feel they can
figure out new high-tech gear without help, compared to around 68
percent of men. And that's just the general population; there are an
increasing number of tech-savvy gadget girls that are leading the
early-adopter pack right along with the guys. It's not an in-depth
article by any means, but statistics that show that women spent
fourteen percent more than men on electronics last year, for instance,
should not be missed.
