Hotspot Game
Canadian Cell Carriers Still Late to
Hotspot Game
03/06/2004 01:49 AMIt's more vaporware: cell phone billing for hotspot usage for hotspots
that don't exist: Over the last year, four Canadian cellular telephone
carriers have made deals for inter-network roaming, issued press
releases, and most recently said that Wi-Fi usage could be billed
directly to a cell phone account. Of course, the carriers haven't
built a single hotspot, and the leading Canadian firm FatPort already
offers a variety of billing and roaming options. FatPort has
partnerships for bilateral roaming with other networks worldwide,
including Surf and Sip. Their locations are resold via iPass, GRIC,
and Boingo. They work with Excilan to allow certain cell customers to
pay via cell phone for their service already. All this to say that the
cell companies in Canada are offering a lot of noise for no results.
Their promise to build 500 locations by the end of 2004 might be
impeded by the locations and chains already under contract to FatPort
and to companies to which FatPort has licensed their technology or for
which FatPort is operating networks. The article also incorrectly
states that hotspot users have to enter a credit card each time,
disregarding the many subscription plans and pre-paid card options
offered by FatPort in Canada and other hotspot networks worldwide. I
know the Globe and Mail is a major daily newspaper, but this article
was written by proxy by the cell carriers who told the reporter
exactly what to think--note the paucity of quotes and none from
companies outside the partnership. [link via TechDirt]...
Which Hotspot Networks Still Stand?
Which Hotspot Networks Still Stand?
05/19/2004 01:26 PMWith the slow rundown of Cometa's clock starting today, which
companies remain standing?: I do have a little ego, and my article in
Feb. 2001 in The New York Times was the first comprehensive piece
written in a major publication about the nascent Wi-Fi hotspot
industry. Several companies were striving to raise funds into the
mouth of the dotcom collapse, which claimed bloated business plans or
too early attempts to capitalize on a technology that only a small
number of laptop users had access to. While researching the story in
Dec. 2000, I spoke to the chief marketing officer of the Aerzone
division of Softnet. Three days after I spoke to him, Softnet pulled
the plug because they couldn't raise the funds to perform the build
out that they'd contracted with airlines and airports to handle. The
firms I interviewed for the article were Wayport, Surf and Sip, Global
Digital Media, AirWave, SkyLink (not quoted), and MobileStar. Let's
start in reverse order. What's clear from examining each of these
firms is that execution and timing mattered as much in 2001 as they do
today: controlling costs and building out a robust network in the
right place can only go so far: users who pay are still required.
MobileStar: While initially well funded, MobileStar had extremely high
run rates. I's technical standards were top notch, but expensive, and
expenses ran far ahead of any potential revenue. They went bankrupt
late in 2001 and had their assets purchased by T-Mobile HotSpot. The
company reportedly went through as much as $90 million in investment
income while producing no more than a couple million in revenue.
T-Mobile has continued to use its brand name and high-level
partnerships to run what is generally considered to be an excellent
network that's overprice for day use, but not far out of scale on
their unlimited monthly plans with one-year commitment. Sky.Link
Internet Plus: A promising Canadian firm with hotel and airports
service, the company disappeared abruptly a few months after my
article came out. It resurfaced briefly with fewer locations before
taking a final plunge. Its history and disappearance are a mystery.
AirWave: AirWave was a small San Francisco Bay Area set of hotspots in
restaurants and coffeeshops that decided that the software they'd
written to manage access points was a better product than the hotspot
business. In 2002, they exited hotspots, spinning off their locations
to...

Netopia Offers Hotspot Solution
06/28/2004 12:59 PMNetopia joins a handful of other companies offering a hotspot-in-a-box
solution: Netopia's hotspot solution costs $300 for customers that
already have a DSL modem and an additional $40 a month for support.
Users, which could be a cafe or retail location, are given cards with
log on numbers that they can sell or give to end users. Netopia will
also sell customers Web site design and maintenance service. Sure and
Sip and AirPath are just two of a handful of other companies that
offer hotspot services to venues. These services are aimed at venues
that don't want to deal with supporting a network themselves. It's
unclear yet if the pricing structures set up by these providers will
fly in the market....

Media Frenzy
Media Frenzy
07/28/2004 06:30 PMMan, there's a lot of media here right now. I've just spoken with
folks from The Nation, and I've got a team from PBS looking over my
shoulder - "Hey, can I get you blogging right now?" Just had a few of
the journalists present yell into the blogger group, asking, "Hey,
does anyone know Kerry's Secret Service codename?" Through the
looking glass.
Coding Frenzy
Coding Frenzy
05/14/2004 09:02 AMWarning: techtalk follows, you may freely skip this if your eyes glaze
over at the word "XML".
I've been in a coding frenzy for the past couple of days. JSPWiki
has had some considerable additions, here being the relevant part of
the ChangeLog:
2004-05-14 Janne Jalkanen
<Janne.Jalkanen@nospam.ecyrd.com>
* v2.1.97.
* Added preliminary support for the Atom blog API. It still
does
not yet completely work, however.
I'll be a non-productive member of the society for the next three-four
days (another wedding? Don't people get tired of these things
already?), so nothing much may happen. But yeah, I nearly got
ecto working with
JSPWiki.
There is still however a question on how the blog and wiki apis should
interact. You see, the page Main on
this site is both a weblog and a wiki page. I'm having
trouble, you see:
- GET to /atom/ lists all wiki pages (which means that even on this
site, there are a lot of them) - not just the weblogs (since
every page can be a weblog, even the weblog entry pages)
- GET to /atom/Main... Should it list all of the blog entries, or
should it GET the Wiki page content? Both are valid
interpretations...
I'm confused... Which is the correct way to handle this? Should a WikiWebl
og combination have separate URIs for Wiki and Weblog
functionality? Isn't that kinda redundant?

Google autolink debate frenzy
Google autolink debate frenzy
03/14/2005 05:45 PMI'm too mired in book work to offer much besides pointers, but here
are pointers galore on the important controversy over the
Google toolbar Autolink
feature -- in which Google offers to overlay its own links to certain
types of information that it finds on everyone else's Web pages. In
2001 Microsoft proposed putting something similar right into its
Internet Explorer browser, and Walt Mossberg and many others blew the
whistle on it. Links should be considered part of the vocabulary of
Web content; inserting links is tantamount to tampering with the
content.
This time it's been Dave
Winer who's been blowing the whistle insistently. Here's Dave's case against
Autolink. The opposite point of view -- it's a tool, I should be
able to use any tools I want once content lands on my screen! -- is
smartly summarized by Cory Doctorow here and
here. Paul
Boutin in Slate, and Tim Bray, also offer good, careful perspectives.
Me, I think the issue is fundamentally political more than
technical; Google is now powerful enough that it needs to learn to
tread more lightly in areas like this. My hunch is the Google-ites,
encapsulated in their "let's bring all the world's information to
light!" mission, simply had no idea what an ethical morass they have
plopped themselves into. If the past is any indication, they're nimble
enough to step out.
