Flowers as speakers

Flowers as speakers 07/21/2004 09:22 AM
This is sweet: a Japanese amp system that lives in a flowerpot and uses the foliage above to amplify the sound.
Called the "Flower Speaker Amplifiers", the gadget made by Let's Corp is hidden in a vase or a potted plant and sends music at just the right frequency to vibrate up the stems and then be converted into audible sound by the plant as a whole.

Early Summer Flowers

Early Summer Flowers 04/28/2004 12:14 AM

Is it summer or late spring?  It sure feels like summer here in the Bay Area.  Anyhow, Steve Kirks shot his azalea for me, so I thought I should send him some of my flowers.  I guess Tim Bray is too busy with his new job to take snapshots of his lawn.

I am rather embarrased to admit that I have no idea what this flower growing in my backyard is.  The tag got lost you see and my head being filled with essentials like Boo leaves little room for flower names other than simple ones like the rose and the sunflower.  It's the same with wine names so all I can manage is 'I'll have the, er, red.'

I've just gotten back into the office and discovered a copy of the new Mike Resnick anthology, "New Voices in Science Fiction," a Science Fiction Writers of America-sponsored book showcasing new, noteworthy writers. Charlie Stross and I wrote a story for it, called Flowers from Alice, a pervy piece of post-Singularity erotica. I'm happy to say that the story was also selected for the inaugural volume of Jonathan Strahan and Karen Haber's new Best of the Year anthology. Link

The Music Bird Corporation has developed a fantastic new product that is only slightly tainted by their ad-copy flim-flammery -- the "Canon," a series of vases and flower pots that actually use the leaves and flowers of plants as speakers. The Canon (a play on Japanese words for flower ("ka") and sound ("non")) uses an acrylic tube to vibrate the flowers, adding directionless sound, which the creators of the product admonish "raise[s] the healing effects" by adding the missing fifth dimension of sound (I hadn't realized flowers had any healing effects at all, besides mending broken hearts. (I'm puking, too.))

The Canon vibro-vegetables will be available in limited quantities this month for prices between $45 and $450, in a variety of styles.

stunning success
07/19/2004 02:52 AM
Back in February, Darren Barefoot started the charitable effort he called "Flowers for Al and Don," in which people donated money for flowers to be delivered to gay and lesbian couples awaiting marriage on the steps of the San Francisco Courthouse. The effort was a signal success. Darren sez:
As you guys covered this (and helped promote it) back in February, I just thought you'd be interested to hear the final results. Ultimately, we raised US $14,312.28. We delivered US $11,542.28 worth of flowers, and donated the remainder to two related and deserving charities--Lambda Legal and the Gay and Lesbian Rights Project at the ACLU.

GM plants change color in the presence of landmines.
The genetically modified weed has been coded to change color when its roots come in contact with nitrogen-dioxide (NO2) evaporating from explosives buried in soil.

Within three to six weeks from being sowed over land mine infested areas the small plant, a Thale Cress, will turn a warning red whenever close to a land mine.

Send flowers to a random couple at SF
City Hall
02/19/2004 02:17 PM
A Minnesotan got the idea to have congratulatory flowers delivered to a random gay couple on the steps of San Francisco City Hall, and now s/he's trying to start a movement.
He called a florist and they agreed to do it. He told them to deliver to any couple -- it didn't matter who -- standing in line to get married, with his blessing. The card will read simply "With love, from Minneapolis, Minnesota."

Once they understood, they were very touched and thought it was a great idea.

He told another co-worker who did the same thing. And now we want to start a movement. Wouldn't that be cool if people from all over the country, gay, straight and otherwise, started sending flowers to the people waiting in line to get married.

San Francisco day four and a bit...

San Francisco day four and a bit... 08/16/2004 02:02 PM

So the day before yesterday didn't go quite as I'd planned. I didn't go and see Dinah or her kittens, but I did get to give Flakes to Heather and then go with her to Taco Bell where we consumed about $16 worth of faux Mexican cuisine between us. Then there was the car wash, and the drive back into the city to go say hi to Derek, two chihuahuas and a cat named Spoo before wandering off to kid robot (dumb toys purchased: 2) and then Giant Robot in Haight Ashbury. Then there was a nice "Blue Meanie" smoothie in a wifi-enabled café which was pretty bloody pleasant, all things considered. The next planned excusion was the epic walk over to the Tonga rooms, which would actually have been pretty bloody epic if I hadn't walked in completely the opposite direction for the first twenty minutes or so. So I got a cab with a driver who listened to light country and suffered manfully the hell of Tim McGraw's My Next Thirty Years (and I quote):

My next thirty years I’m gonna settle all the scores
Cry a little less, laugh a little more
Find a world of happiness without the hate and fear
Figure out just what I’m doing here
In my next thirty years

Oh my next thirty years, I’m gonna watch my weight
Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late
Drink a little lemonade and not so many beers
Maybe I’ll remember my next thirty years

You see what I'm talking about? Anyway - so I got to the Fairmont a bit early and so decided to loiter around a bit in the foyer and read my new book while all the smartly dressed people looked at me strangely and tried to remember my face just in case they'd need to identify me in a Guantanamo tribunal later in the year. And then the event began and I got to talk to a couple of dozen neat cool web people that I just don't get to see enough. I danced (badly) with Mena and Dinah and Heather and chatted a lot to David about what it was like to be an Englishman living in the States at the moment which was extremely interesting. I felt a bit sorry for my poor ex-flatmate Mella who had just got off the plane in San Francisco and come straight to the bar because she didn't know anyone, but I think she enjoyed herself. And of course the bar's fake thunder, lightning, rain and floating boat/island/band were as awesome as ever...

Yesterday started a little more sedately with an enormous cooked breakfast over at the Pork Store with Leslie, Lance (also here) and Mella. Mella and I then wandered up into town, up Valencia and past a few second hand stores up to the Civic Center and then up Market for a bit of an explore. (This feels a bit like a 'what I did on my holiday' tract, so apologies for that.) And then after a few confusing disorganisational miscarriages, we ended up with a friend of Mella's called Emily driving through Chinatown, then walking up to Coit Tower and then down to Pier 39 for Oysters and general seafood. Then Mella wandered off to meet Emily's parents, while I returned back to Leslie's (past the San Francisco Bear Fair), met up with Ben Cerveny and Webb, drove around the city in a convertible car before wandering up to Molly's place and drinking a few glasses of wine and basically passing out. Nice evening!

And what's next over the next couple of days?

  • Visit Six Apart
  • Meet up with Kevin Marks for lunch
  • See Ben Cerveny and Jim Speth and talk about geeky shit
  • Try and do some gay stuff of some kind

Off to San Francisco

Off to San Francisco 04/09/2005 09:28 AM

Thanks to everyone who showed up in Mar del Plata to participate in the ICANN meeting. I thought that the discussion was healthy and productive and although we moved forward on a number of things, we are left with a lot of work to do based on the feedback we received on the strategic plan, the board governance guidelines, .pro, .net, IDNs, transparency, process and a number of other topics. Special thanks to staff for running such a great meeting in the absence of our CEO Paul Twomey. I think you did an excellent job.

Thanks to everyone who showed up for dinner last night and special thanks to Mariano for organizing everything. It was great to meet the Argentine bloggers. I'm sorry I was late. Our bus from Mar del Plata broke down and we had have them send a new one.

Thanks to Mookie letting me stay at his place in Buenos Aires.

I'm off to San Francisco today to do my usual rounds and to go a Institute for the Future retreat.

Since my flight doesn't leave until this evening, I hope I can do a bit of moblogging in Buenos Aires.

So what did I do yesterday... Er... Basically went for lunch with Kevin and Jesse where we talked about Apple and set-top boxes and food and stuff, wandered into Technorati and said hi to people (wave to Tantek), micro-bumped into Joi, then got the CalTrain up to see Six Apart (purely for fun), got a train back with Anil and finally wandered off to The Cafe for my required dose of gaydom, which was a bit weird as it was hip-hop night and I felt like everyone's fat beardy grandfather. So I got a bit drunk and danced clumsily and collapsed back at Leslie's unconscious at about one. Funny day.
