Three EPoX Bluetooth Accessories
Reviewed
05/31/2004 07:00 AM

epox_bluetooth.jpg imagePC hardware review site EnvyNews reviews three low-end Bluetooth products from EPoX, the BT-HS01 wireless Bluetooth headset, the BT-DG03 Bluetooth USB Dongle, and probably most interesting, the BT-PA01 Bluetooth parallel printer port. While the dongle and headset come across only so-so, the BT-PA01 acts as a wireless parallel cable, allowing wireless connectivity to most older printers with only one catch: the communication is only one-way, meaning any diagnostic or error information sent by your printer back to your computer will be lost. Since most of us have USB or Ethernet-enable printers these days, this is a 'probably not needed by most, but nice to know it's there' sort of product.

PDA Buyer's Guide has a good review of the $250 peripheral, and while there's maybe not a ton of new information for GPS devotees, if you've already gotten an X30 and have been curious about What GPS Can Do For You, it's a perfectly adequate launching point. Do bear in mind, though, that there's nothing stopping you from using one of the surfeit of Bluetooth GPS options out there with your Axim (most of which seem to be made by the same manufacturer, even).

With an 8-hour battery life and operation up to 60,000 feet (for pilots, don't cha know), the GPS unit seems to be yet another very solid device from industry newcomer Mobile Crossing (and can be picked up for $210 via the Mobile Gadget News review).

bluetake_hayabusa.jpg imageSo Hardware Pacers has the first review I've seen of the Bluetake BT420 EX Bluetooth Hi-Fi Sports Headphones, but it sort of reads more like the eighth-grade epic poem I once wrote to express my true feelings for Mandi Hefner, peppered with lots of 'the most incredibles' and 'exhilaratings' and 'perfections,' although thankfully the review doesn't feature me as a modern-day urban ninja, out to protect her honor by defeating the Suitors of the Seven Stairs. It does have, among other things, a surprisingly-high suggested retail price -- about $250 -- which pretty much means all those superlatives better be spot on, especially when they note that the sound quality diminishes in the presence of other Bluetooth devices.

Also, Hardware Pacers, your Forbidden Right Click Technique is no match for my Celestial Print Screen Science! (Thanks, JP!)

mega_2104full.jpg imageTrusted Reviews has taken the MSI Mega 516BT Bluetooth flash player out for a spin, yet despite a load of improvements over the previous models, like the addition of an SD/MMC expansion slot and the hard-to-miss Bluetooth, they still find it to be overall a dud. It's not that the potential isn't there. When it works, features like the ability to record calls into the player while using it as a Bluetooth headset are pretty great, but an uneven user interface and spotty success with some of the phones they tested it with make it look as if this player might be one to pass over unless you're in dire need of the handful of unique features it offers.

Wireless in music players isn't a bad idea. Why, according to The Register, even Apple thinks so.

VKB-nightshot.jpg imageI guess David Ciccone really wants you to read this review of the iTECH Bluetooth Virtual Keyboard, since he's sent it to me four times across two different email addresses (perseverance is the key, kids!) He's got a full-blown crush on the thing—if there were an HTML entity for rendering little flowers around something's name I think he'd use it—but I think I will remain a bit more tempered until I have a chance to play with one myself. As David says in his review, the angle of attack is important in a device like this, which is exactly the sort of thing you may not have much control over in situations where you'd want to use it. Still, undeniably dorky cool.

winxpsp2.gif imageCNet has a pre-release review of Windows XP Service Pack Two, and while a lot of the details don't really interest us that much, there are some nuggets that users of Tablet PCs and Windows Media Center Edition PCs might be glad to hear:

Other SP2 goodies include Windows Media Player 9.0, Bluetooth Client 2.0, DirectX 9.0b, and a new wireless LAN client with an improved interface. In addition, tablet PC users who download SP2 will receive the latest OS for such devices: Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. Similarly, SP2 will upgrade first-generation Media Center PCs with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004.

Expect XP SP2 to be available for download in the next few days.

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

logitech_5025.jpg imageLogitech has a new "affordable" Bluetooth headset on the way, as long as you consider $70 not a lot of money for a fancy speaker and microphone. Believe it or not, I've so far resisted the Bluetooth headset thing, mostly because I don't need one, but also because it pains me to pay almost half-again the price of a phone for something I'd really like to see bundled in. But hey, it's a step in the right direction, at least.

Logitech also announced a "Pro" model which will use AFH (Adapative Frequency Hopping) to prevent interference from other 2.4GHz radios, like Wi-Fi and cordless phones.

One benefit they don't exactly mention is that a USB headset serves as a separate sound device in Windows, allowing you to run just the headphone chatter in multiplayer games like Battlefield 2 to the headphones alone, while keeping the sounds from the game, explosions and such, in your booming surround sound speakers.
