Monitor shopping, especially used monitor shopping from a tiny shop in
New Jersey that takes four hours round trip... well, it sucks,
especially when the monitors are crap. If you needed a surprise
ending, I'm sorry, I can't provide one. What I can provide is
this new Keyspan USB-to-Parallel cable, the sort of peripheral that,
despite being handy, gets increasingly geekier by the minute. Still,
for the occasional "transferring data to an ancient PC" maneuver, it's
nice to know someone makes a cable. Next up: SD cards that fit in
5.25-inch floppy drives.

Massively Parallel Minesweeper
Massively Parallel Minesweeper
07/06/2004 04:53 PMUnder heavy pressure from Linux application server clusters,
Microsoft is working on a version of Windows Server
2003 designed to support parallel computing.
Microsoft plans to aim Windows Server 2003 HPC edition, at
companies in life sciences, engineering, finance, and other industries
where highly scalable systems built with relatively low-cost hardware
are being applied to demanding applications. “Parallel-computing
clusters are increasingly being seen in the enterprise,” Microsoft
product manager Dennis Oldroyd said. “It’s been the domain of academia
and research. Now, with low-cost standardised hardware, it’s becoming
less of a niche play.”
There's already a lot of work that's been done in this area on
Linux and OSX, so Windows will have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Salvatore Orlando, Raffaele Perego, and Fabrizio Silvestrihttp:
//eprints.osti.gov/cgi-bin/dexpldcgi?qry1125085327;2Abstract by AuthorsThis paper describes the
architecture of MOSE (My Own Search Engine), a scalable parallel and
distributed engine for searching the web. MOSE was specifically
designed to efficiently exploit affordable parallel architectures,
such as clusters of workstations. Its modular and scalable
architecture can easily be tuned to fulfill the bandwidth requirements
of the application at hand. Both task-parallel and data-parallel
approaches are exploited within MOSE in order to increase the
throughput and efficiently use communication, storing and
computational resources. We used a collection of html documents as a
benchmark, and conducted preliminary experiments on a cluster of three
SMP Linux PCs. This has been added to

Utility
12/05/2003 12:56 AMThis utility processes cubes, partitions, and dimensions in Analysis
Services databases on local or remote servers. It includes two
executable files, ParallelProcess.exe and ProcessPartition.exe.
ParallelProcess.exe is a Microsoft® Windows® program that enables a
user to specify and process multiple cubes, partitions, and dimensions
on a server. Unlike Microsoft SQL Serverâ„¢ 2000 Analysis Manager,
this program executes its requests in parallel. ParallelProcess.exe
calls the auxiliary executable file, ProcessPartition.exe, to do the
actual processing of cubes, partitions, and dimensions. You can also
run ProcessPartition.exe from a command prompt or in a batch file to
specify and process a cube, partition, or dimension. The processing
performed by ProcessPartition.exe is recorded in log files.

Q²ADPZ ['kwod "pi-'si] is an open source implementation
of a system for distributed computing. The system allows the
management/use of the computational power of idle computers in a
network. The users of the system can send computing tasks to these
computers to be executed, which can be in the form of a dynamic
library, an executable program or any program which can be interpreted
(Java, Perl, etc.). Platforms supported are Linux, Unix, Win32 and
MacOS X. The system is a client-master-slave architecture, using
message based communication. Messages between the components of the
system are in XML format, and can optionaly be crypted for security
reasons. This has been added to

Axis of Ævil saw my old moblog post of Saturn and produced an English version of the
walkabout of the actual scale model of the Solar System that was built
12 years ago in Helsinki. Wonderful! (Did you know that they used to
steal Earth every few weeks until they replaced it with something more
durable? Or that Pluto had to be relocated due to road construction
work? How douglasadamsian can you get with that? :-D )
I can recommend it - I've done the full tour of the Solar System once,
and it's a nice bike trip: you get to see some beautiful scenery.
Especially finding Uranus among all the bushes is a wonderful
experience. And it really does illustrate the scale of the things,
when you're traveling at (relatively) 5 times the speed of light and
it still takes a bloody hour to get to Pluto :), but just a
minute to get to Mars...
(But hfb: why didn't you ask me? I could've told you what it is and
where to find it, so you wouldn't have had to harass the ignorant
natives ;-).
