The Open Bioinformatics Foundation is a non profit, volunteer run organization focused on supporting open source programming in bioinformatics. The foundation grew out of the volunteer projects Bioperl, BioJava and Biopython and was formally incorporated in order to handle our modest requirements of hardware ownership, domain name management and funding for conferences and workshops. The Foundation does not participate directly in the development or structure of the open source work, but as the members of the foundation are drawn from the member projects, there is clear commonality of direction and purpose.

Bioinformatics Moves Into the Mainstream - An Explosion of Data Is Being Tamed with New Systems By Jennifer Ouellette in The Industrial Physicist (Volume 9, Issue 6)
http://www.a ip.org/tip/INPHFA/vol-9/iss-5/p14.html

Genome mappings, those completed and those in progress, have generated a vast amount of biological data, and now more than ever, scientists need sophisticated computational techniques to make sense of it. To meet those ever-increasing needs, bioinformatics is shifting from software designed for a specific project in academic laboratories to the commercial mainstream. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research area loosely defined as the interface between the biological and computational sciences. In practice, the definition is narrower, according to Michael Zuker, a professor of mathematical sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. For Zuker and many others, the term applies to the use of computers to store, retrieve, analyze, or predict the composition or structure of biomolecules. These include genetic materials such as nucleic acids, as well as proteins, the end products of genes. ... The need to manage and analyze this data largely drives the current bioinformatics boom. 'Biology is awash in data,' says Eric Jakobsson. 'We cannot exploit the body of data that is currently out there -- we cannot mine it -- without computers, and now we cannot even handle the data in our own individual labs without sophisticated computation.'"

Feds Launch Bioinformatics Centers - Institute contracts for databases and portals to compile info on diseases. Officials at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) are enlisting private companies and universities to help make data available about disease-causing organisms. Under eight five-year contracts, companies and academic institutions will develop databases and Web portals to compile information about a small number of pathogens, the germs that cause disease. Some of the pathogens are considered possible bioterrorism agents, while others are public health concerns unrelated to terrorism. With NIAID footing the bill, the data will be freely available to scientists, said Valentina Di Francesco, bioinformatics program director in NIAID's Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Officials at NIAID, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, have awarded seven Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) contracts, and one more is in negotiations, she said. Unified Hyperstructures for Bioinformatics: Escaping the Application Prison by Adam Moore and Tim Brailsford

Abstract
The Next Big Thing in hypertext will be unifying different applications in bioinformatics through the ZigZag paradigm, allowing this field to live up to its promise of revolutionising the pharmaceutical industry. The paper outlines ZigZag, Ted Nelson's unique hyperstructural paradigm, and illustrates how, by examining a current bioinformatics task such as structure/binding prediction, the application of this novel paradigm has the potential to revolutionise bioinformatics completely by allowing a unified approach to a task currently fulfilled by fragmented data and applications.
