First tweaks to the searchable archives

First tweaks to the searchable archives 10/28/2003 11:09 PM

There's nothing like having a director of marketing who also happens to know about technology.Shortly after I put the first version of the mailing list archive online, I asked Scott the usual question: "what do you think?""Nice," he said, "but...

Redefining Privacy In An Age When All Is

Redefining Privacy In An Age When All Is
Known And Searchable
05/04/2004 03:09 PM
While lots of people are complaining about this or that "privacy" question (see the overhyped discussion about Gmail and privacy), some are pointing out that people are focusing in on minor issues and i gnoring the very big questions concerning privacy. There's no doubt that the rise of big databases and better searching techniques means that information is being collected and connected like never before. However, instead of just focusing on whether or not Google should place contextual ads in our email, shouldn't we take a step back and look at the bigger questions about who has control over your information? The article linked above tries to re-frame the debate, saying that we first need to have that discussion, and set up a framework which will allow people to better deal with the more specific minor issues like ads in our emails.

TVEyes to make podcasts searchable with
Podscope
04/11/2005 10:16 AM
TVEyes, a search provider for broadcast media, has announced Podscope, which they bill as "the first engine to search within a Podcast." TVEyes' Podscope enables the audio indexing of podcast content thus making every word within a podcast searchable. TVEyes crawls the web with Podscope looking for podcasts and creates an index against every word, thereby making the contents searchable. The user can search on a term, generate a list of results ranked by a variety of methods to find the most relevant podcast and click to play or click to download. So speak clearly, podcasters -- Podscope will be available later this month.

Plaxo, Yahoo Make Deal on Search

"From the article, 'Today Plaxo integrates Yahoo's search engine directly into the Outlook e-mail program. Under the deal with Yahoo, Plaxo will get paid for channeling people to Yahoo's search engine. The search box will be placed beside a Plaxo icon that sits atop Outlook. Plaxo will eventually make Web searching possible from individual e-mails, according to Masonis. Ultimately, he wants Plaxo to search individual words within the e-mails. You would click on the word and Plaxo would do a Web search through Yahoo.' Thanks to Searchblog for the tip. J.B. also comments on the deal." [ResourceShelf]

And the reason we can't integrate into Outlook searches of local library catalogs, library-subsidized databases, or library web sites is what?

More bl0gmark tweaks

More bl0gmark tweaks 12/10/2003 07:53 PM

I'm up to 110 blogmarks now, and from my point of view they're the single most useful feature I've added to this site in a long time. I've modified my day archive pages to show the blogmarks added on that day, and I'm considering adding them to individual entry pages as well so that an entry is displayed along with the blogmarks added while that entry was at the top of my blog. The idea there is that I could aim to blogmark "related items" for the top entry, although obviously unrelated sites would end up in there as well.

The other thing I'm currently mulling over is whether or not blogmarks should allow comments. Jason Kottke's inline links get a decent amount of comment traffic but I'm not sure mine would get enough individual traffic to warrant a comments thread for each one. I could always add comments to the blogmark daily archive pages, although that could get confusing on days with a lot of comment-worthy links.

Does anyone actually look at the blogmarks? Would you comment on them or read the comments if they were available?

J. Robert Oppenheimer, a "productive

J. Robert Oppenheimer, a "productive
dilettante"
04/13/2005 11:46 AM
He was fond of reading Proust and Dostoevsky. He studied the Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit, painted landscapes in oil, and flirted with Marxism. His mannerisms -- such as saying "Gee!" when pondering some scientific marvel -- were contagious. And when the US government decided to incinerate hundreds of thousands of fishermen, housewives, cooks, potters, and Zen monks as a decisive blow for peace in 1945, he told the commanding officers on the mission, "Don't let them detonate it too high . . . or the target won't get as much damage." He was J. Robert Oppenheimer, the mild-mannered destroyer of worlds who led the Manhattan Project, portrayed in a new biography called American Prometheus.

Oppenheimer Centennial

Oppenheimer Centennial 04/23/2004 11:01 AM
J. Robert Oppenheimer Centennial: It is telling that the first atomic test would be named in reference to a poem by John Donne ("Trinity") and the next series of tests would be labeled simply alphabetically according to military protocol ("Able," "Baker," "X-ray," "Yoke," and "Zebra"). It is indicative of the changing of hands of the bomb, moving from the responsibility of intellectual eclectics like Oppenheimer into the protocols of military rank and policy. See also the Oppenheimer Affair. Via Science NetWatch.

What is the current state of American poetry? Hank Lazer: Perhaps, contrary to the laments, we are now living through a particularly rich time in American poetry—an era of radically democratized poetry...In its anarchic democratic disorganized decentralization, poetry culture has developed in a manner parallel to the computer: the decentralized PC has beaten the main-frame. No one can pretend to know what is out there, or what is next. Who are some of the most notable American poets active in the beginning of the 21st century?

Slam poetry for CC remix

Slam poetry for CC remix 07/23/2004 04:46 AM
Wayne Mercier is a Vancouver slam poet who has just released his first book of poetry published, and along with it, a CD of him reading his work. He's made the entire audio of the CD available for downloand and remix under a Creative Commons license.
I'm really excited about this, not just because it's a way of getting my stuff out into the world, but because - to my knowledge - this is the first time this has been done in Canadian poetry. Coach House Press releases electronic editions of their author's work but retains copyright. Also the fact that this is audio, and thus open to extensive remixing and incorporation into larger, multimedia projects, is very cool.

More Secret Santa poetry... 11/13/2003 05:24 AM

Weblogger south, Weblogger north!
Come hear my tale of Christmas glee...
Which this year shall be much in rhyme
(I'm sorry and please bear with me...)

A mount so high it touches space;
Within: a massive darkened cave,
Wherein a sharp and pointy race
Of tiny elves has been enslaved...

And in the centre, Mrs Claus -
A tower of computer might
(And built for no apparent cause)
Stands passive in the candlelight.

Beside her there's a silhouette
A disconnected robot form
Who waits each year for holidays
The chance to serve and be reborn.

But then, what's this? The Yule alarm!?
A klaxxon sounds throughout the lair
And with a twitch, the robot's arm
Thrusts holly fistfuls in the air!

He stands, a monster, next the flames
That every year before hath burned.
And lo! His robot voice proclaims
That SECRET SANTA HAS RETURNED!

On today's edition of the NPR program "Day to Day," I interview a University of Pennsylvania writing instructor who is teaching her students the common literary elements found in simple pop songs from the '70s and '80s, classic love poems, and sonnets. Her course is called "Hit Me Baby One More Time -- The Erotic Lyric Tradition", and uses two recently-published compilations of uber-schlocky pop song lyrics: I Can't Fight This Feeling (love songs), and You Give Love a Bad Name (breakup songs).

Listen to the archived audio segment after 12PM PT, and hear what may well be the most hilarious 30 seconds in NPR history: award-winning news man Carl Kassel performing a reading of the Pat Benatar classic "Love is a Battlefield." Who loves you, baby? Link to archived audio (Real and WM), available after 12PM PT.
