Compression, conditional GET

Compression, conditional GET 07/19/2004 02:55 PM

Jason Cook writes for WebMonkey about gzip compression and conditional GET for RSS and Atom feeds.

Both are important for lowering bandwidth use. If I had to rank them, I’d say conditional GET is more important—but I find that there are lots of sites, even some very popular sites, that still don’t support conditional GET.

It looks like most (if not all) of the popular weblog hosting systems support conditional GET, which is very cool. It appears to be mainly custom content management systems used by one or just a few sites that tend not to support it. You can almost count on lack of support if the RSS or Atom feed is generated live by a script instead of being served as a static file.

(Note that I intend no disrespect for people and organizations that develop their own systems—I myself use a custom system written in PHP.)

RSS Bandwidth and Gzip compression

RSS Bandwidth and Gzip compression 01/03/2004 04:35 PM
There are several ways to cut down on the amount of bandwidth your RSS feeds use.

The very best way is to make sure your server returns 304 Not Modified responses. (See HTTP Conditional Get for RSS Hackers for more details.)

But today I’m talking about another method (which should be used in addition to conditional Get): gzip compression.

The idea is simple: the server compresses the feed before returning it to your newsreader. This means less bandwidth is used because fewer bytes are transferred.

One of the nice things about this is that if a given newsreader doesn’t support gzip compression, a server will return an uncompressed feed, so you’re not locking anybody out. But it turns out that lots of newsreaders do support gzip compression, so it really is worth the effort. (Ted Leung has been maintaining a list of which newsreaders support it.)

Today I (finally) turned on gzip compression for my feeds. (Here’s a handy page you can use to
check for gzip compression on any URL.)

Since my feeds are generated by PHP, I used Dean Allen’s super-easy instructions for turning on gzip compression. If your feeds are static files (which is probably the best choice) then you can probably use Apache’s mod_gzip or mod_deflate.

Anonymous: "While Panther's Finder's contextual menu allows Zip compression of files with its 'Create Archive of ...' this still requires bringing up the contextual menu, selecting the option .. and then 'cleaning up' the original file and newly created archive.zip. As Panther has the attached Folder Actions, I figured this could be used to shortcut the process and consolidate the file/archive within one place. Luckily 'Sal from Cupertino' picked up on my query in this regard, and provided the following script to compile with the AppleScript Script Editor."

RPM Delta Compression Virtual Update
Repository 0.1.1 (Default branch)
04/05/2005 06:32 AM
RPM Delta Compression Virtual Update Repository is an experiment to explore the possibility of significantly reducing the bandwidth required to apply updates to a Fedora installation. This software includes a server which provides a virtual update repository to clients such as yum, up2date, or other update tools. It also includes a utility to create and maintain a RPM delta repository. The server will attempt to generate the update RPM from a small delta file applied to a locally stored RPM from the original distribution.
Changes:
A few bugs in handling byte range requests from yum were fixed.

Getting a rise out of Reiser4

Getting a rise out of Reiser4 08/28/2004 01:03 AM

Last time I looked at ReiserFS was, I think, at least couple of years ago.It was a nice file system but I didn't find any use for it.  Two years later, Reiser4 is released and I still can't find a good use for it, but it sure has some intriguing one liner feature list that would any geek a bit of excitement:

  • Reiser4 is the fastest filesystem, and here are the benchmarks.
  • Reiser4 is an atomic filesystem, which means that your filesystem operations either entirely occur, or they entirely don't, and they don't corrupt due to half occuring. We do this without significant performance losses, because we invented algorithms to do it without copying the data twice.
  • Reiser4 uses dancing trees, which obsolete the balanced tree algorithms used in databases (see farther down). This makes Reiser4 more space efficient than other filesystems because we squish small files together rather than wasting space due to block alignment like they do. It also means that Reiser4 scales better than any other filesystem. Do you want a million files in a directory, and want to create them fast? No problem.
  • Reiser4 is based on plugins, which means that it will attract many outside contributors, and you'll be able to upgrade to their innovations without reformatting your disk. If you like to code, you'll really like plugins....
  • Reiser4 is architected for military grade security. You'll find it is easy to audit the code, and that assertions guard the entrance to every function.

Dancing trees?  I gotta look into that algorithm sometimes.  I wonder if variations of the algorithms will be called Disco or Samba?  ;-)  Hmm.  One of the testimonials is LivingXML which is a native XML engine built-on top of Reiser.  That's nice except LivingXML seems to be, well, dead.  Oh, well.

Reiser4 file semantics: An opportunity
for open source

Reiser4 file semantics: An opportunity
for open source
09/09/2004 05:28 AM
Some people feel that the Reiser4 file semantics will present problems for the Linux community. In a nutshell, every file now looks like a directory and can be opened as a directory. The names in that directory are not new files but metadata associated with the file, as documented by Hans Reiser on the Namesys site. The immediate response in the community has been that this is too big a change and should be withdrawn. I humbly propose that this is a challenge we should face head on now or we may not have an opportunity to do so in the future.
