Microsoft to Offer a Media-Player-Free
Version of Windows by January
12/24/2004 12:25 PM
On Wednesday, the European Court judge overseeing the European Union vs. Microsoft antitrust case did what many observers thought he would not. He denied Microsoft's request that the ordered remedies (including the unbundling of Windows Media Player from Windows) be postponed. Whether or not Microsoft appeals his denial, the Redmond software giant said it will deliver to European OEMs starting in January a Windows-Media-Player-free version of Windows. Microsoft also will publish communications protocols, including some heretofore-unpublished Windows Server ones, as part of the judge's order.

gba-movieplayer-2nd8.jpg imagePortagame is reporting that the new version of the GBA Movie Player (not the one from Nintendo, but a third-party one) is now not only thinner, but also allows you to play emulated games from ROMs, be they legal homebrews or less-than-legal warez copies. It's only $25 at Lik-Sang, and I almost ordered one to try it out, but then was struck by my Lik-Sang curse - my shopping cart was literally at $150 before I was out of the Nintendo section and on to the Playstation one, so I had to close the whole window and pretend it never happened. If you've got stronger resistance to Lik-Sang's importy goodness, you might give it a try.

Oh, and the main reason to get the GBA movie player is that you can convert DVDs or whatever to the format, copy them to CF cards, and watch movies on the go. It's a much better option than Nintendo's sanctioned offering that limits what movies you can watch.

samsungst-5.jpg imageGood morning, friends. I had a great time in Virginia this weekend, although as is typical at a LAN I played videogames for about 2 hours and drank for about 8 each day (not that this is necessarily in error). That being said, I'm glad to be back, so I can talk about things like this update to the Samsung YP-T5 "World's Smallest" YP-T5 flash player, the YP-ST5. Although the form factor is pretty much the same, the battery life has been bumped from 8 hours of playback to 20, USB 2.0 support is in, and an updated firmware (around August or so) will add OGG Vorbis support.

Also, reheated fried calamari has the delicate taste and texture of a cockring. Take the necessary flavor precautions.

Xeni on NPR: SAG rejects video game
industry's contract offer -- UPDATED
06/24/2005 06:49 PM
Xeni Jardin: For to day's edition of the NPR radio program "Day to Day:

The Screen Actors' Guild has rejected a work agreement with the video game industry -- but its sister union, AFTRA, has accepted. I talk with host Alex Chadwick about the contentious relationships between both unions and game publishers, and the debate over whether voice actors are entitled to a share of electronic game profits. What will SAG's rejection mean for actors? What effect will the dispute have on next year's crop of games?

Previously on Boing Boing: SAG nixes video game work contract, SAG/AFTRA video game strike on the way for Hollywood?, Strike Looms Against Game Makers, Game biz coders want fatter paychecks, too

UPDATED: Not so fast. The Screen Actors Guild just issued this surprise announcement:

SAG President Melissa Gilbert and National Executive Director/CEO Greg Hessinger will convene a special meeting of the national board on Wednesday, June 29, to consider the tentative Interactive Media Agreement with video game companies that was rejected this past Tuesday by SAG’s National Executive Committee.

“When the NEC rejected the tentative contract earlier this week, we said we’d explore all our remaining options,” said Hessinger. “Since then, we have received feedback from enough of our membership to conclude that this matter must be brought before the full board for its consideration.”

The previous three-year agreement with video game companies expired this past May 13 after several months of bargaining with the companies. Over the course of the subsequent weeks, SAG issued a strike referendum to its affected members, before reaching a tentative agreement on June 8, which is set to expire next Thursday, June 30. The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which negotiated jointly with SAG, approved the agreement last week and it will go into effect for their members on July 1, 2005.

By simply lining up a yellow targeting cross and pressing a button, pilots can aim weapons and sensors onto whatever they happen to be looking at, in the air or on the ground. In addition, the JHMCS display all sorts of other useful information, like altitude, airspeed, G's (upper and lower case), angle of attack, and Kenny Loggins playlists. The iPod is proving a colossal hit on the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony's own turf. The tiny white machine is catching on as a fashion statement and turning into a cultural icon in Japan, much the same way it won a fanatic following in the United States. Although Apple doesn't release regional sales figures, six of the top eight selling music players in Japan are iPod models, according to a market research company.
