I'm "Adam Rider" 10/28/2003 11:09 PM

It's official. I have a pr0n name, thanks to MyPornName.com - another sillyservice(tm) from Jason "We're Having Mexican - Get Over It" DeFillippo. He caught me in the act earlier this afternoon. Showing off gadgetry... not... doing something naughty with my naughty bits. In this particular picture, I'm demonstrating the proper usage of the "O" key. See, you're not supposed to tap it without sounding it out first. That's hell for Canadians, let me tell ya. Can you guess who's fingers those are... in the lower right-hand corner? Hint: they're not Sprocket's. Oops, I mean: Chaz Rage's....

Welcome Adam

Welcome Adam 02/13/2004 05:42 AM
I delighted again to announce another new contributor to this weblog. Adam (aka snowman) is already quite a prolific weblogger — running useful.mac, everythinghurts.com, puzzleblog.com, totallyretro.com and (my particular favourite) everthingsoothes.com — so I’m glad he's able to share some of his time with us. Welcome aboard Adam!

What Adam Said

What Adam Said 08/07/2004 09:08 PM
A month or two ago, I got a call out of the blue from some guy I never heard at a recruiting shop saying “I’m looking for a reference on Adam Bosworth.” I’m afraid I gave the guy a hard time, first I took him for a prankster and then I ranted at him along the lines of “You’re talking about probably one of top twenty software people in the world, have you never heard of Quattro Pro and Microsoft Access and IE 4? What are you talking to me for?” To his credit, the guy was patient and explained that this was Google and Google is different. So I told him about my exposure to Adam over the years and all the things it’s painfully obvious that he’s good at, and I’m sure the other people they called did too, and now he’s at Google. But what I really wanted to say today is, go read his latest piece, he says in one paragraph what I’ve been raving about for months in the area of Web Services: “The really useful things turn out to be the simplest ones.” How many times do we have to re-learn this lesson? Anyhow, there’s more, and it’s all good.

Dinner with Adam 05/04/2004 03:42 AM

On my last night in Amsterdam for this trip, I had dinner with Adam Curry at a meat house that reminded me of a bar in Mazomanie, WI, many many years ago. We had meat and beer. So did everyone else.

It's really interesting walking around Amsterdam with Adam, who is a very famous person here. People stare at him. Ask for his autograph. I get some of the reflected glory, who is that guy with the rock star? It's a pretty unusual thing for me.

Anyway, we talked about next things to do. It was good to get some one-on-one time with Adam this trip. Now it's off the Schipol, the Amsterdam airport, to go back to Boston, and whatever adventures await me there.

Adam Bosworth comes to the light

Adam Bosworth comes to the light 09/21/2004 10:14 AM

I have this vivid memory of meeting Adam Bosworth out on Dave Winer's patio - back in like 1997. He (at the time) as an all-star at Microsoft - having just created IE and a key guy in the XML game.

Then Adam went to BEA and now Google.

He's now caught up with revelations about media - where I was back then - 7-8 years ago.

Welcome to my life - Adam - now we get to see what Google will do about all this.....

Can you say "digital lifestyle aggregator?"

See yah at Web 2.0.

Here's Adam's post.....

These days, like everybody else, my media is increasingly on my hard disks. It is on PC's, Mac's, iPod's and recorders of TV like Tivo although mine is a Time Warner supplied variant. As such, like everyone else I know, it has profoundly changed the way I view my stereo and my home entertainment in general. I don't want to build a stereo from a stereo company. Nor do I want to buy one of these "home entertainment" PC's. I have more PC's at home already than I want/need. What I want is a super simple way to buy an amp and speakers (of good quality) and just plug them into a box that in turn, talks wirelessly to all of my PC's and/or hard disks. think of the box as a preamp, but it can be a lot simpler than old ones because the only sound source and media source is ethernet and 80211. I want my cell phone to support bluetooth to the box so that I can use it and its screen and keyboard/keypad to pick the album, artist, movie, tv show, etc to play/record and I want the box to support record like a Tivo, but on my hard disks. Why my cell phone? Because these days it has a good enough screen to show me a list of artists or albums or shows and I use one with a keyboard, but even without it, it has a keyboard and pointing and then there is just one device in my life. No more remote hell. I'm OK with the slightly painful iTunes style of DRM although it is irritating. In other words I'll limit my personal use of the recorded media to 4 or 5 personal machines like laptops or iPods.

From my point of view, this is hard. I go into a PC store and they don't understand amps or speakers and try to push little tiny ones on me. They don't understand wireless at all. I go into a stereo store and they think I still listen to sound from CD's and video from cable or DVD's when again, I typically want it on my disks. They will sell me a flatscreen for $5K or more without blinking, but ask for a 1 terabyte hard disk which should be <$1K and everyone just stares. One terabyte can store a LOT of movies and songs and shows. I also want what great recording quality on my sound and the stereo stores seem to know nothing about this. I'm sure I'll here from Mac people about how this is all easy/possible on Mac's, but I did go into an Apple store and wasn't happy with their knowledge about amps and speakers and cabling and sound. Apple does something that makes no sense to me at all. They think that the iPod is the sound source and I need a remote control for it thereforce. I want the iPod to be my remote control (when I'm in range of a sound system AND I have no headphones plugged in) and then talk to my "box" that is playing media.

Imagine my delight w hen Adam Rifkin wrote....

Kragen recently said to me that

X HTML tables are the new CSV, and they're better than CSV because they have escaping. Also there's nicer viewers for them but that's besides the point.

It occurred to me that the use of modular XHTML for semantics is not a fad; rather, it points to a trend that Tantek Çelik calls microformats.

In my post on The Web Way, I mentioned having dinner with Tantek, which led me to rule 6,

Where it's useful, they should embrace microformats, a/k/a lowercase semantic web.

Tantek provides a compelling case for how The Awesome Power Of XML is best harnessed through tiny XML dialects usable for specific purposes. I agree; I've noted in my cata blog post (and the accompanying comments) that RSS is the single-biggest-real-world-useful example of TAPOX, and RSS is useful because it is tiny (and therefore easy to embed in applications as an input/output format).

Tantek talks with enthusiasm about the philosophy of microformats:

  1. Keep the formats simple. Make them easy to learn and use. As Kragen noted, using an XHTML dialect gives you escaping and presentation control, making it easy to embed such formats in web pages with minimal effort.
  2. Pave the cowpaths. Only create a new format to serve an existing application.
  3. Get rough consensus and running code. Implementation in scripting languages such as PHP, Python, and Perl is paramount to adoption.
  4. Get adoption by "real people". Only then will semantic (x)html move beyond theoretical discussions.

Tantek also talks with enthusiasm about a collection of microformats that represent the philosophy of microformats well:

  1. RSS for simple syndication (though the jury is still out on its progeny, especially Atom, which seems to get more complicated as it goes through committee despite fi ne leadership).
  2. xfn for human relationships (using the rel attribute; note that using rel is also an easy way to do ext end Creative Commons metadata).
  3. GeoURL for location (using simple <meta> tags).
  4. hCalendar for calendar events (mapping the commonly used iCalendar format to XHTML).
  5. hCard for address books (mapping the commonly used vCard format to XHTML).
  6. XOXO for outlines and blogroll-like subscriptions.
  7. Attention.X ML for keeping track of what you've read, what you're spending time on, and what you should be paying attention to.

The Chairman and Founder of CommerceNet, Marty Tenenbaum, asserted his belief in a recent brainstorming session that

There are maybe twenty simple schemas that cover 80% of the potential uses of data in collaborative commerce.

Marty often conveys his enthusiasm for the ongoing social software trend to increasingly facilitate improved E-Commerce. When thinking of Tantek's and Marty's visions, I'm excited that thoughts on cata blog suggest that there are opportunities to create microformats for products -- perhaps the music, movies, and books that fill up peoples' typelists represent a good place to start.

[i findkarma]

OK - so wow - is all I can say!

Marty and Tantek agreeing on the same thing!

What's coolio is how Tantek has his own representations of digital identity, events and outlines. Whatever happened to FOAF, iCal and OPML?

Isn't standards building fun?

I'm talking about how I showed the chairman of NHK (Japan's public broadcast network) a video that I downloaded from Adam Curry's MTV.COM. I think this was around 1994 or 1995... It was one of the few video files on the net at the time. I used to show this video all the time and I told this to Adam when I met him at Bloggercon. He said he wanted a copy of the video and I thought I might have it around, but I looked and I don't have it. Sorry Adam! Does anyone else have it? It's a bit of Internet nostalgia and history that would be fun to have. Unfortunately, I think this predates archive.org.

Adam Bosworth: Loosely Speaking

Adam Bosworth: Loosely Speaking 06/07/2002 11:03 AM
The only real success story to date in the world of loose coupling is the Web itself. When people change the implementation of their sites, often in very fundamental ways, the browser continues to be able to browse the site. The reason this works is that the browser makes no assumptions about the site's implementation. The only thing the browser knows is the wire format (usually HTML) and the protocol.

"tri" Adam Bosworth is an interesting guy. He was Microsoft's XML guru and helped build the foundations of .NET. He also designed MS Access. Then some dirty business occurred, he left Microsoft and setup his own company, was sued by Microsoft and forced to resign from the company he founded. Now he's joined the Java camp, and is presently the CTO of BEA and a big advocate of J2EE :-)

Unconstitutional? Maybe. But not sufficiently so for the NY ACLU to say much anything about it. Maybe the Judge could have recommended the same sex-ed scheme that shows, in parts of England and Wales where it [called A Pause] was trialled in 104 schools, sexual intercourse among 16-year-olds fell by up to 20 per cent. Now that may mean we have to have more discussion of oral and manual, with less genital-genital emphasis. How do I turn on the screensaver with a key combination!?! I don't want to use the hot corners (I already have them overloaded with Exposé and I want to have the top left corner free so I don't have to worry about counting pixels when I try and access the Apple menu), but so far the best way to lock the Powerbook is to go and turn the lid down and then back up again. which turns on the screen saver (and stops iTunes, BTW, since the computer goes to sleep for a second).

I know there are Mac people reading me, so please: tell me which key combination I have to use, or which freeware application I have to install to just be able to press Apple-F12 to lock the computer! I've been trying to find the info from Google, but apparently I haven't been able to figure out the right keywords.

Frustrated now!

(Sorry for the headline, just wanted to grab your attention there. My Mac Powerbook does NOT suck, it is a wonderful little machine and I grow more attached to it every day. It is by far the best computer I've ever owned. I just need this one thing to make it perfect. Please?)

Passym sucks

Passym sucks 01/22/2004 03:17 AM

Tonight is my second night in an Embassy Suites with Passym Wireless internet access, and I have to say that Passym really sucks.

Connectivity is just horrible. I don't know why the service sucks so badly... it might be because I'm in a corner room (they're larger at the Embassy Suites) or it might be because I'm using a Macintosh, but neither of those two things should be reasons that the connectivity sucks so badly...

Maybe there are too many people using the service to keep up with what I want to do, but that shouldn't be a problem. I've normally stayed in Wyndham and Marriot hotels with Wayport access, and even though most of the time those hotels only provide wired access, they always worked just fine. I could connect to my office's VPN at the most complicated end of connectivity issues, and I could definitely send email through my own servers, but with this silly Passym service, I can't connect to the VPN and I can't even send email through my own service... and the speeds are terribly slow compared to what I expect them to be... especially at $10/day.

The worst part is that to get technical support, I'm supposed to email their support@ email address... no one here at the hotel knows anything about the service from a technical/troubleshooting stand-point, and I can't get email out through my email client. Good thing I have a webmail client set up on my server...

So, next time I stay in a hotel, I'll ask them if they have internet access, and I'll ask who the provider is. If it's Passym, I'll choose a different hotel if internet connectivity will be a need.

Why JSP Sucks So Hard 12/19/2002 11:43 PM
once again my UI engineers will be taking perfectly good HTML written in Dreamweaver and tearing it apart, throwing out some of it and rewriting other parts of it, just to make it work with the JSP they're writing. Once they're done, the HTML author will have absolutely no clue what the page does any more, and will have no desire or ability to edit it. When we insist that no really we need this redesigned, we'll spend twice as long doing it (doubling our costs, negative ROI, bad technology choice, yadda yadda yadda) since the HTML author will need that long to write in sample data and then have the JSP author tear it out again. -- Marc Hedlund

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

Verdict on JoyBee 720: It Sucks

Verdict on JoyBee 720: It Sucks 03/17/2005 03:51 AM

joybee_720.jpg imageDapreview got their hands on the BenQ JoyBee 720 at this year's CeBIT, and they appear to be full of almost nothing but complaints. Though the unit brings back a flash media expansion slot, they say the size of the unit itself and retroness of its internal menus strike a fatal blow. I guess you can't really tell from the picture, but the unit does appear to be pretty enormous.
