Video Card Junkie

Video Card Junkie 10/28/2003 11:09 PM

There's nothing quite like a reinstallation of Windows to blow a perfectly good weekend. Not that I would have spent my time doing anything other than playing with software and catching up on my favorite news feeds. That's not the point. The point is: I'm thinking of dumping NVIDIA in favor for ATI. However, I'm not up for sinking another $500 on a video card that'll do what I need it to do. Sure, most of my time is spent on the desktop, but 2D acceleration is every bit as important as 3D speed. That Raedeon 900 XT is lookin' mighty fine, but not until or unless I can find a buyer for the Ti-4600. I'm completely unmotivated to do anything about it right now. For that, I'd like to blame the carbs....

Nvidia's $1,000 Video Card SLI Solution

Nvidia's $1,000 Video Card SLI Solution 06/28/2004 09:55 AM

nvidia_sli.jpg imageHello, Future. I believe we've met before, in the past. nVidia has announced SLI for the GeForce 6800 series of PCI Express video cards. What does that mean for you, the already broke-ass gamer? Well, if you buy one of the new, expensive Intel motherboards with the Tumwater chipset, you can connect two of Nvidia's top-end, $500 video cards together via a "Scalable Link Interface" MIO port, harnessing the power of both cards simultaneously to render game graphics. It won't be twice as fast; the received wisdom is around 50 percent faster than a single card, although Nvidia is claiming up to 90 percent faster frame rates in some situations.

Although it might be easy to brush off SLI as a toy for rich gamers who can drop $5,000 on a gaming rig without a second thought (and you'd be right, at the moment), in the near future the SLI will offer a handy way to boost the performance of your existing card -- just toss another one in there and go. Unfortunately, if history is any reference, by the time a second 6800 becomes affordable, buying a whole new, next-generation video card is probably a better option.

No word if this is the same technology that Alienware was touting around E3. It would certainly make more sense if it were, as Alienware isn't exactly known for pioneering cutting edge video hardware solutions. Looking at the pictures of Alienware's solution, the interconnects do look different, so maybe they figured out some magic of their own after all.

visiontek_9800pro.jpg imageNew York electronics superstore J&R has the VisionTek Xtasy ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) video card on sale for just $150 with $5 shipping (New York state crew pays tax). The 9800 Pro isn't the most cutting edge video card out there today, but I can personally vouch for its continued ability to play all the newest games. It's still able to pump polygons in Doom 3, Tribes: Vengeance, and Rome: Total War just fine. Better than fine, actually, and I paid $300 for mine just six sad months ago.

Oh, and despite the dorky name, VisionTek is a fairly well-known brand, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I am always on the lookout for certain domains and luckily some owners have either quit using them or forget to renew and they become available again. Their are several commercial software packages out there that search for you. But by far the best I have found is the free site [www.deleteddomains.com] be sure to check them out when searching for domains.

Cory Doctorow: Salon has a tremendous and weird profile of Mike Salvini, an agoraphobic ex-junkie/ex-hardcore metal singer/ex-obsessive-compulsive who has developed a net-famous method for increasing penis size by stretching your member with weights for hours on end. Reportedly, he's taken his flaccid penis to over 10 inches.
Today Mike spends 18 hours a day spreading the gospel of P.E. "I'm submerged in penis," he says with a laugh. "It's my full-time job." He's filmed a DVD of his self-designed exercises -- "Matters of Size: The Ultimate Guide to Penis Enlargement" -- that will be distributed in a few weeks by Vivid Entertainment. His Web site Matters of Size has 40,000 registered users and offers paying members videos, diagrams and one-on-one tutelage over private message and e-mail -- along with softcore pinup shots of his girlfriend Jen, a teacher and former dancer he met in rehab four years ago.

Perhaps it was just a matter of time... a Dark Side deck posted on Rebelbasers revealed the awesome power of, believe it or not, the "lowly" Ugnaught. When used in conjunction with a few other cards, it became quite easy for this deck (or variations thereof) to leave a Light Side player with nothing but their initial Setup to go up against a deck that could virtually replenish itself indefinitely. Pick a Card, Any Card

Pick a Card, Any Card 03/27/2005 01:38 PM
International signage. Gaian philosophy. Psychedelic illumination. Bohemian Cats. Crones. Radical Fairies. Though the venerable Rider-Waite (available in several versions), Crowley's Thoth, and the enduring Tarot de Marseilles continue to dominate most people's idea of Tarot, independent decks featuring a v ariety of themes breathe n ew l ife into the historical Tarot. No longer merely a fortune-teller's prop, Tarot is gaining popularity as a tool for do-it-yourself therapy. Even skeptics, who once speculated the decks were "used ... mainly in fortune telling" by emotionally crippled adults, are reluctantly (and subtly) revising their commentary on the cards.) Massive review sites post sample card images and extensive reviews. Associations and mailing lists provide community, and authors give away detailed "how to" courseware online. With thousands of decks on the market -- incorporating everything from the Life of Lord Buddha to subtle jabs at America's Favorite Fool -- your deck (even your virtual deck) is out there.

Today, we look at Digital Rights Management. A key question here is: "Should you distribute your video online?" Movie industry figures who have watched what happened in the music industry with Napster and its successors are determined not to find themselves in a similar predicament. When a movie studio invests $50 million in a film, it wants to be quite sure the work is not going to be passed around Kazaa and BitTorrent like so many MP3s. By Pearson Education, Inc. 1025
