AP - Ask anyone to name a brain disease that causes dementia and eventually death, and the most likely answer you'll get is Alzheimer's disease. Though that's one correct answer, it's not the only one. And a group meeting this week is trying to increase medical and public awareness for other degenerative brain syndromes that are as misunderstood and underdiagnosed as they are destructive to victims and families.

Global Atlas Of Infectious Diseases

Global Atlas Of Infectious Diseases 12/06/2003 08:39 AM
Global Atlas Of Infectious Diseases - WHO (World Health Organization)
http://globalatlas.who.int/

In a single electronic platform, the WHO’s Communicable Disease Global Atlas is bringing together for analysis and comparison standardized data and statistics for infectious diseases at country, regional, and global levels. The analysis and interpretation of data are further supported through information on demography, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental factors. In so doing, the Atlas specifically acknowledges the broad range of determinants that influence patterns of infectious disease transmission. Over the next year, the system aims to provide a single point of access to data, reports and documents on the major diseases of poverty including malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, the diseases on their way towards eradication and elimination (such as guinea worm, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis) and epidemic prone and emerging infections for example meningitis, cholera, yellow fever and anti-infective drug resistance. The database will be updated on an ongoing basis and in addition to epidemiological information, the system aims to provide information on essential support services such as the network of communicable diseases collaborating centres, the activities of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network among others.

The Database website offers a cross-referenced index and search portal that cover such topical areas as Symptoms and Signs, General Internal Medical Disorders, Drugs and Medications, Congenital and Inherited Disorders, and more. The Diseases Database index is modeled after a standard medical textbook, and "was inspired by the 'surgical sieve' classification and memory technique used as medical school..." The site contains dictionary type definitions for many items via links to the National Library of Medicine's Unified Medical Language System, A 'pre-loaded' multiple search engine inquiry page using all item synonyms, subject specific hyperlinks to web information resources for many items, and more. Links on the site also include: Tips for Searching, Database Content FAQ, Site Troubleshooting Tools, and a Feedback Page [From The NSDL Scout Report for the Life Sciences, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]. In an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A". By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.

Smoking gun

Smoking gun 08/03/2004 04:31 PM
The NY Times reported today on the front page that the information about the planned attack on financial buildings in NY and Newark is 3-4 years old. That is, it's information we may have had even before 9/11.The indications that there will be an attack before the elections does not point to the information about those four buildings. So why is it being trotted out now? I, of course, have my suspicions, almost all of which end with the phrase "grounds for impeachment."...

The Smoking Gun

The Smoking Gun 03/13/2003 10:25 AM
Remember that whole drone "cover-up"? Here's the plane. The prototype of Iraq's smoking gun WMD threat. Constructed of balsa wood and duct tape, it says Allahu Akbar (God is great) on the side. And, well, they were probably half right. While it's not really a gun, it probably does smoke -- it uses lawn-mower-style two-stroke engines. Washington Post story here.

Not Smoking...Again

Not Smoking...Again 03/23/2005 12:34 PM

Starting this morning, I am not smoking.  Instead, I am doing the niccotine lozenge called Commit.  The candy looks like a small alka seltzer tablet and, as expected, tastes chaulky and tingles as it dissolves.  It's less convenient than niccotine gums because I am not suppose to use it within 15 minutes after eating or drinking.  So no more mixing niccotine with coffee or full stomach for me.

I have no idea whether this will work.  Longest smokeless run for me was six months.  We'll see.  Hopefully, lozenge won't bring vivid dreams like patches did.

Please don't wish me luck.  I can't smoke luck.

No smoking gun in Iraq

No smoking gun in Iraq 02/01/2005 09:15 PM
In fact, there was no gun at all! In news that I'm sure surprised no one, the US announced the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq -- the justification for our pre-emptive invasion of that country -- ended after two fruitless years. The New York Times opines in its editorial Bulletin: No W.M.D. Found: The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq may have been one of the greatest nonevents of the early 21st century, right up there with the failure of the world's computers to crash at the end of the last millennium. That Y2K scare at least brought us an updated Internet. Fear of the nonexistent W.M.D. brought us a war. No matter how the Administration spins it, the ends do not justify the means. Lies, scare mongering, and faulty intelligence have no place in a democracy, regardless of whether a democratic Iraq is the ultimate outcome of the war. This tactic has been so successful for President Bush that you can see it being applied once again, now to Social Security and its current 'crisis' (though projections show benefits will be solvent until 2042, see Democrat disputes Social Security 'crisis'). Americans, I beg of you, in the words of Chuck D: Don't believe the hype!

Quitting Smoking

Quitting Smoking 07/21/2004 04:53 PM

Dave Winer writes about his experience quitting smoking, and it reminds me of my experience quitting. Many years ago I was a smoker, and it took a couple of tries before I quit successfully.

My first attempt at quitting was doomed to failure. See, I noticed that my cravings were stronger when my friends and I went bar-hopping, so I told myself I'd only smoke when I was drinking. The result? I drank more. Duh.

So I quit cold turkey, and that was well over a decade ago. I've smoked one time since then, about three years ago - not a perfect record, but not bad. The thing that made it easier to quit was that I stopped smoking right after the end of a relationship gone sour. I figured as long as I was giving up one bad habit, I might as well give up smoking at the same time.

When I stopped smoking

When I stopped smoking 06/14/2004 08:37 AM

On the Sunday before my surgery, I said to Tori -- "You know I haven't decided to stop smoking yet."

Then after the surgery, not sure which day it was (probably Tuesday morning) in the ICU, the surgeon comes to see me, really sharply dressed, with a sharply dressed woman with him (not sure who she was).

The doctor says "You're a computer guy, right?" I said I was. "What's the word you guys use for seeing something?" I asked if he meant visualize. "That's it!" he exclaimed.

"Now I want you to visualize yourself as a smoker." Since I had been trained in meditation, I thought I was about to be deprogrammed. Okay, I'm visualizing.

"You're dead!" he said and started laughing.

What do you mean? I asked. "People like you who keep smoking are usually dead within three years," he explained. Gulp. Somehow, in all the doom and gloom it had never really sunk in that I had almost died. If I had waited another couple of weeks to deal with this, well, I don't even like to think about it.

Anyway, that was the moment. That was when I decided to stop smoking.
