Earthquake 10.5 is Bunk! Bunk! Bunk!
Earthquake 10.5 is Bunk! Bunk! Bunk!
05/22/2004 03:33 PMThe TV miniseries Earthquake
10.5 is just airing in the UK. It is - bluntly - an unmitigated
pile of shit. Interestingly if you search for it online, pretty much
the first thing you get is a long page by earthquake experts explaining precisely why it's
total bunk:
Fiction: There can be a magnitude 10.5
earthquake
Fact: The magnitude of an earthquake is related to the length
of the fault on which it occurs--the longer the fault, the larger the
earthquake. In order to have a magnitude 10.5 earthquake you would
have to have a fault that circles the Earth - no such fault exists.
Fiction: Thinking an earthquake is an aftershock because they
couldn't find an epicenter - all earthquakes have epicenters
Fact: Aftershocks ARE earthquakes!! The only difference is that
they occur after a larger earthquake instead of by themselves.
Fiction: Nuclear explosions can "seal" faults
Fact: Nuclear explosions CANNOT seal faults. Earthquakes are
part of a global tectonic process that generally occurs well beyond
the influence or control of humans.
Additional movie fiction, with explanations to come:
- An earthquake creates dust clouds visible on satellite radar
- Using the term lateral skip
- Earthquakes can cause trucks to sink in dirt, long after the
earthquake happened
- Scientists being able to successfully predict earthquakes over
short time intervals
- Plates conjoin at 324 feet below the earth's surface
- The magnitude of an earthquake in progress cannot
decrease/stabilize
- Water draining into the faultline
- Fault opening at the ocean and water rushing up the fault
Now I know it's churlish to expect entertainment to be
completely accurate, but this is just a few things from a list
of dozens! I'd like to think that people doing stuff like this had
some grasp of what they were talking about, but evidently
not...

Microsoft's iPod Killer?
Microsoft's iPod Killer?
04/09/2004 04:01 PMA few weeks ago, news.com reported on Microsoft's iPod killer: a
portable device that can handle both audio and video. The device is
roughly twice as heavy, three times as thick and twice as long as an
iPod though. "Killer"? I don't think so. Not only will it be too bulky
to easily carry around with you, I also don't... (466 words)

03/31/2005 07:35 PMGriffin Technology Inc. on Thursday announced the release of their
AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as
you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The
AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it
works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it
doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60
feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's
South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new
iPod mini in your pocket?
Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors
iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be
giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have
to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it
to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the
highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many
songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep,
it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

iPod, iPod mini
08/13/2004 07:17 AMGriffin Technology has introduced
RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle
for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter
broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a
backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the
charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs
into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its
transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your
computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo.
Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with
other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the
1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The
PocketDo
ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds
a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones
amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to
external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both
PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's
10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.

Engineer Hugo Fiennes took a break from his
day job as a hardware and firmware designer at Rio Audio (maker of the
iPod competitor Karma player, among other things) to give us some more
info on the OGG-on-iPod plausibility, including why the iPod mini (and
future iPods) might have a better shot at getting OGG support than the
older, whiter iPods. There's even information about why Apple may have
chosen to implement their 'Lossless AAC' instead of the more widely
adopted FLAC lossless format.

Microsoft's XUL
Microsoft's XUL
10/29/2003 12:12 AMAccording to this Microsoft blogger the
reason IE development has seemed quiet of late is that they've been
working hard on XAML, an XML Application Markup Language which is a way to
create applications in the browser (or out for that matter) [...] It
is basically an XML structure with CSS and JavaScript. The CSS
defines the appearance and the JavaScript dictates behavior.
Sound familiar? It should do - that's exactly what XUL does. On the plus
side, this completely validates the grossly under-appreciated
importance of Mozilla's biggest secret. On the negative side, this
looks set to represent the ultimate browser lock-in - in a
few years time when IE 7
comes as standard on new PCs I wouldn't be surprised to see the corporate
software development world moving almost exclusively to this
technology - after all, it's going to be extremely easy both to
develop and to distribute and it will have all of the benefits of a
web application without the downside of the restricted GUIs offered by HTML.
Of course, Microsoft might make it an open standard. But then I
might win the lottery next week.
I wonder if it will be possible to transform XAML in to XUL using XSLT?

Microsoft's New MSN TV
Microsoft's New MSN TV
08/11/2004 11:01 PMMicrosoft is getting ready to unleash an updated version of its MSN TV
service according to a review over at Design Technica. This update
will contain a completely redesigned broadband Internet receiver and
of course new services. You can get Microsoft’s MSN TV terminal at
major retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Amazon.com, and
others, beginning this October at $199.
Microsoft’s MSN TV terminal will allow users to play digital media,
send/receive e-mail, and of course browser the Internet. Just image it
all from the comfort of your favorite chair you can view
recorded/download digital videos and listen to your favorite music (as
long as Windows Media Player supports that format). No, Microsoft
isn't stopping there; users will also be able to view their favorite
pictures. Either with an integrated photo viewer or some kind of a
slideshow application. The receiver has your normal audio outputs,
composite/S-Video output, phone line port, Ethernet port, and two USB
ports. All this will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows CE operating
system, which already has shown up in Microsoft's automotive
software.
This product reminds me to much of the original WebTV. That isn’t
necessarily a bad thing, but overall WebTV wasn’t that impressive.
The one thing that really bugs me about Microsoft’s MSN TV is the
overall look. With its current color scheme it reminds me of a
toddler toy you'd pick up at Wal-Mart.
