Sir Howard Says RIAA Lawsuits Lead To
Sony Music's Turnaround
01/23/2004 02:23 PMWell, that was a disappointment. Back in July, we ran an article
about how Sir Howard Stringer was
trying
to save Sony Music by coming in as an outsider and not just
screaming "piracy". Instead, he had admitted that the industry had
been angering its customers, and how the industry needed to be
"reinvented from the ground up." That sounded good. However, now,
he's going around
saying that the
RIAA lawsuits have turned around Sony Music and talking about how
wonderful it is that all this "piracy" has been stopped. What
happened to not calling it piracy and reinventing the music business?
Apparently that was just a PR spin while the
RIAA
goons did their job. He also ignores the fact that the economy is
clearly picking up and reports have shown that
file
sharing is on the rise again. The one good point in his speech is
the realization that having multiple formats and standards for music
download stores doesn't do anyone any good and that there needs to be
some standardization. Of course, mp3s were the standard, but since
the industry likes to believe everyone is a crook before they're a
customer, that was no good for the recording industry.

Commonwealth of Virginia Will Expand
Turnaround Specialist Program With
Microsoft Partners in Learning
09/24/2004 03:49 AMVirginia Governor Mark R. Warner and Microsoft Corp. announced today
in Portsmouth the formation of a relationship to support and expand
the Virginia School Turnaround Specialist Program (VSTSP) for
principals. As part of the Governor's Education for a Lifetime
initiative, the program teaches school administrators proven business
management skills, places them in charge of persistently
low-performing schools, and works with local divisions to give these
new principals expanded power to help turn their school around. Last
spring Warner awarded a $1.4 million contract to the University of
Virginia's Darden/Curry Partnership for Leaders in Education to
implement VSTSP. Today Microsoft announced it will invest up to $3
million in the VSTSP over the next five years, through its Partners in
Learning initiative, in collaborative projects aimed at addressing
student achievement.
Email: to sign or not to sign?
Email: to sign or not to sign?
01/22/2004 02:10 AMIf you participate in non-techno-geek mailing lists, and you also make
a habit of "signing" your mail in compliance with the open standards
articulated by RFC2015/3156, you've undoubtedly run into questions
about what you're doing and possibly even criticism for doing it. At
least that's been my experience over the past couple of years on
mailing lists as low-tech as one dedicated to raising donkeys and
mules and as high-tech as tech journalism. Well, on second thought,
maybe those are both low-tech. But in any case, I've been asked to
stop signing messages on both lists. The question is what to do:
continue swimming upstream or give in and go with the flow?
