Inner Speech and Self-Awareness

Inner Speech and Self-Awareness 09/03/2004 12:20 PM
Does your robot have an inner monolog? If so, it may be on the road to self-awareness according to ideas presented in a recent paper by Alain Morin of Mount Royal College. Alain's paper, Possible links between self-awareness and inner speech: Theoretical background, inner mechanisms, and empirical evidence (PDF format), provides evidence that our self-awareness comes from nothing more mysterious than the brain's ability to use language to talk to and about itself. Perhaps no quantum effects, neural electromagnetics fields, or other strange phenomena are needed to explain it. This would support arguments for the possibilty of machine intelligence.

Getting over the language barrier usually requires the services of a human translator, but handheld computers are getting powerful enough, and speech recognition software accurate enough, that travelers, soldiers and aid workers in foreign countries could soon have automatic speech translation in hand. A prototype Arabic-English medical translator is a significant milestone on the long road to universal translation.

You Talking to Me? Speech on Mac OS X 04/12/2004 02:14 AM
The Speech technology is in fact built in two parts: a speech synthesizer that your Mac can use to communicate with you -- read text on demand but also keep you informed about the status of a process. And a speech-recognition technology that allows you to talk to your Mac to send commands to it -- what you usually do with a keyboard and mouse.

It's Not About Free Speech

It's Not About Free Speech 03/22/2005 04:24 PM

So, about all this lawsuit stuff about revealing sources: it's not about bloggers being journalists. You're a fool if you're looking at it from that angle. They're suing to learn which person they trusted broke that trust; which person signed a contract and broke the terms of that contract.

In short, they're not terrorizing the bloggers, they're going after their own employees and/or developers to show that the NDA has teeth. As such, don't expect negative press to shut it down. They're going to keep going because the future of the NDA is at stake, not the future of blogging. I believe that Apple honestly couldn't give a rat's ass about that. You can bring free speech and journalism and sources and all that shit into this all you want, but in the end, Apple is protecting its right to hold people to contracts they sign. Don't expect this to go away any time soon, and especially not from public opinion.

If you sign a piece of paper, you better damn well read what you signed. That's all this comes down to. No need to lament the "death" of free speech (which was intended to mean you can't get arrested for speaking your mind, not revealing corporate secrets that you promised, in a contract, that you wouldn't, or conspiring with that person to reveal them); free speech isn't dead. You can lambast the government all you want, or be the whistle-blower at a corporation all you need. What's at stake here is Joe Blow saying he won't say a word and then telling the world everything he heard.

A speech I'd like to hear

A speech I'd like to hear 05/07/2004 10:31 AM
You know how sometimes when you're angry at someone, you write a letter that you don't send just because writing it feels good? That's what I do when I get frustrated at what I'm hearing from politicians, except it comes out not as a letter but as a speech in the bombastic rhetorical style typical of candidates. This is what I wrote last night......

Fair use = free speech

Fair use = free speech 07/11/2004 03:35 PM
Lessig points out a documentary on Fox News, one that makes extensive use of clips from Fox, without permission, to make its point, and what this means:
As the Times article describes, Greenwald's style for distributing documentaries may be the beginning of something new -- political criticism, using interviews and clips, making a strong political point, distributed through DVDs and political action groups. (See some other examples here). On what theory does he, and others, have the right to use such material without permission? On the free culture theory we call the First Amendment: Copyright law must, the Court told us in Eldred, embed "fair use"; "fair use" is informed by First Amendment values; the values of the First Amendment most relevant here are those expressed in New York Times v. Sullivan. As with news-gathering, critical political filmmaking needs a buffer zone of protection against the overreaching of the law. And if the potential of this medium -- now liberated by digital technology -- is to be realized, we need clear precedents that establish that critics have the freedom to criticize without having to hire a lawyer first.

We may owe our speech and our existence
to dogs
01/16/2004 11:31 AM

In my pursuit to understand Bo better, I'm reading a book that Barak gave me called How to Speak Dog. It's really a great book about how to to communicate with your dog. Stanley Coren makes an interesting assertion about our co-evolution with dogs.

Stanley Coren
It is well established that the primitive humans who survived to become our forefathers formed an early relationship with dogs. Compare our success to that of the Neanderthals, who never got along with dogs, and who ultimately died out. Some evolutionary theorists have suggested that the survival of our ancestors had to do with the fact that our cooperative partnership with dogs made us more efficient hunters than Neanderthals2. With the dog's more acute sensory systems, finding game was easier.
[...]
Here is where the serious speculation begins. These theorists suggest that since these early humans now had dogs to do the tracking, they no longer needed the facial structures that would allow them to detect faint scents. This, then, allowed our early ancestors to evolve more flexible facial features, which were capable of shaping more complex sounds. In other words, our prehistoric association with dogs, who would do the smelling for us, gave us the ability to create speech.

Speech tomorrow at Rakuten

Speech tomorrow at Rakuten 01/08/2004 08:09 PM

I'm giving a speech about the future of the Internet tomorrow afternoon from 2:30pm-3:30pm JST. The speech will be at the Rakuten New Year party. (Rakuten acquired Infoseek Japan and I am now on the Portal Group advisory committee.) I'll try to stream it, but it will be in Japanese. My slides are in English and I've put my outline on my wiki. Please feel free to add comments or links to examples on the wiki. The outline just lists the topics I will cover, but not what I'm going to say. ;-)

I'll be giving live demos of #joiito and IM so if you're around, I might ping you.

I'll be using keynote exported to QT inside of Safari with my examples loaded in tabs.

The latest version of the Keynote QT is here.

GRIPE : Keynote doesn't let you put hyperlinks in presentations. They should either figure out some way to embed Safari inside of a Keynote presentation or allow hyperlinks. Apple Computer presentations use two machines, one for browsing and one for Keynote. Doh. Not very user-friendly.

I will be streaming this if I have enough bandwidth. Copy and paste this URL into QuickTime rtsp://stream.joi.ito.com/j oitv.sdp. (Warning. Japanese.)

UPDATE: Sorry folks. Didn't have a Net connection so couldn't connect to IRC or get Hecklebot working.
