They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Acer has a new desktop replacement laptop out that's sort of ho-hum in general, but is the first to market with a mobile graphics architecture based on PCI Express. ATI's Mobility Radeon X600 powers the 17-inch, 1,280 by 800 pixel screen, and all the other usual desktop replacement parts come out to play, like a Pentium 4, Wi-Fi, and a built-in subwoofer. The relatively low-resolution of the screen could actually be a benefit to those looking to the Acer Aspire 1800 as a gaming laptop, as the 64MB video solution won't have enough oomph to render graphics at resolutions much higher than that (but it's still might eke out some anti-aliasing).

It's cheap, too, at only around $1,400, but of course is lots of corner cutting, with no integrated WiFi, DVD burning, or Bluetooth. Even the screen is a measly 1,024 x 768 resolution. Still, if mobile gaming (or other horsepower-heavy processing) is your goal, that's a lot of laptop for not a lot of money.

I can't help but look at these giant desktop replacement laptops like the Acer Aspire 1714SMI and think what a bright future there is for LAN gamers. I'm going to Tribal-Wars East, a 500 person LAN party in Chantilly, Virginia, in July, and as I'm looking at LCD flat panels and other portable hardware to make the trip less harrowing, it's hard not to look at the 3.4GHz P4, 1GB of RAM, and nVidia GeForce FX Go5700 of the Acer machine and see not a too-large laptop, but an extremely portable gaming rig. Sure, it's well over $2,000, but with built-in DVD burning (including DVD-RAM, of all things) and a 17-inch screen, it's not hard to start considering moving to a two-laptop lifestyle -- one chunky one for gaming, and a lightweight one for actual, everyday lugging.

Although it seems like brand dilution to me, if you really need a laptop with the famous Ferrari red and logo, you should check out the Acer Ferrari 3200 reviews, like the one they just posted at Pocket Lint. While it's not the absolute fastest laptop out there, it's no slouch--a AMD Athlon 64 2800+ compliments an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB RAM, plus multi-format DVD burner, 4-in-1 integrated card reader, and in-built 802.11g and Bluetooth. The one saving grace of this machine, in my opinion, is the price. Although the price varies wildly from vendor to vendor, it can be found fairly easily for about $2,000 without much searching--at least Acer left out the premium Ferrari price.
