"The World Doesn't Have to Suffer
Through Poor Software," Says Robertson
05/28/2004 09:39 AM

No one else says it quite like Michael Robertson. "The world doesn't have to suffer through poor software which invites hackers, like Microsoft Outlook," the Lindows Inc. chief executive writes, in his latest epistle to Lindows/Linspire fans. "Desktop Linux is a viable alternative," he proclaims.

My browser ate Joel's API response

You won't believe this, but just spent quite a bit of time writing a reply to Joel Spolsky's article about Microsoft losing the API war, and my browser refreshed for some reason and the darn thing went away.

I'm going to bed. Damn.

I think the browser just wanted to have the last word on this one.

[Scobeliz er]

OK - so let me be the one to ask the questions: "who do you work for, how much money do they have in the bank and you telling me they can't fix the bugs in the browser?"

Until that day has come - you'll keep losing your stuff.

I love yah, but you were just asking for that one.

Michael Robertson sounds off on what's happening in the software marketplace.

Come on Baby RunLinspire

Date Published: Jul 19, 2004

I've got a video you should watch. It's a bit corny, but this parody will likely make you smile and remember our new name - Linspire, there is also a special offer at the end of the video.

We're completely transitioning from Lindows to Linspire over the next
two months. Here's the official announcement.

Watch the video and get a special offer

We thought it was a smart business decision at this time, so we're
investing the time to change our website, building signs, and corporate documents. Upcoming upgrades of our software will be rebranded entirely as Linspire. We'll do our best to minimize the impact to users, but this change will trickle down to all versions and all languages including English, Japanese, Spanish and Italian. It will NOT change how our products function or overall appearance. But future versions will have a 5 letter change from "Lindows" to "Linspire." While we're waiting for the new business cards, we hope you'll change your bookmarks and other web links to Linspire. Links to Lindows.com will
continue to work, but it would be helpful if everyone would switch them over. Ideally, in the near future, Linspire will beat Lindows in a googlefig ht.

While our name is changing, our passion for bringing choice is not. We
strongly believe that most desktop software is too expensive because there has been a lack of healthy competition. Software should be much more affordable than it is and Linux is the solution. But Linux has been much too complicated for all but the most technically savvy, which is why we built CNR, a one click way to add software for hundreds of improving Linux programs, allowing you to update your system or sign up for services. Our mission at Linspire is to bring Linux to the mass market - be it home, school or business users. We
want to commercially support Linux, so retailers will have confidence
and will stock pre-installed Linux computers to give people an alternative to the expensive, virus-prone alternative.

We hope whatever our name is, we'll continue to get your support and feedback. And maybe you can tell a friend to Come on baby run Linspire...

-- Michael

Dan Farber reports from the OSBC here in SF and let's us know what Larry Augustimn said. He's identified specific models and shown how companies are asking their clients to pay them to convince them to hire them.

That is so beautiful.

And watch Doc's IT Garage for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at OSCON.

BTW Dan Farber is one of my favorite peeps.

“Apple makes Windows apps about as often as Microsoft ships bug-free products, and if iTunes for Windows (free) is any indication, that’s a crying shame,” writes the PC World editors for the “Best of 2004.” “The iTunes media player works on PCs the same way it does on Macs, right down to the handy feature that lets you share your music library with other PC or Mac iTunes users on your network. It looks great, it’s easy to use, and it has a surprising number of useful features, like the abilities to generate rules-based Smart Playlists and to trim individual tracks.” [Jun 2]
