Call It Casual Gaming?

Can You Play Eight Hours A Day And Still
Call It Casual Gaming?
05/28/2004 09:35 AM

A few months ago, we wrote that every few months there's an article somewhere about making video games for non-gamers - and they always seem to focus on making games for women. Well, it's been a few months, and Wired Magazine has decided it's their turn to write up an article about "casual gaming," which is what they seem to call the online gaming market for the relatively simple, but completely addictive games that many people play via EA's Pogo, Yahoo or MSN. This isn't a new idea, but it's amusing that every time it's written about, people write about as if no one knows that there are so many people (usually women) who actually play these games.

Portugal in Three Hours

Portugal in Three Hours 04/19/2004 12:17 PM
I'm off in a couple of hours for Portugal. I arrive Tuesday morning after taking a red-eye, have dinner with the conference hosts that night, talk on Wednesday morning, and leave Thursday morning. That leaves me about three hours to see the entire country, plumb its depths, and come to grips with the Portuguese soul. That would be impossible for most people. Thankfully, I am a shallow American. BTW, here's a travel tip: I've spent the past couple of weeks convincing my children that Portugal's leading export is hotel soap. That's going to save me loads of shopping time!...

First 24 hours in Japan

First 24 hours in Japan 08/09/2004 07:37 AM

My first 24 hours in Japan included the following:

  • a soak in a traditional Japanese public bath
  • a swim in a 25-yard pool
  • a visit to an enormous Buddhist temple complex that has been an important pilgrimage site for hundreds of years
  • a semi-traditional tea ceremony
  • walking around three koi ponds
  • a meal in a restaurant that has been in the same family and at the same location for more than 300 years

All this without leaving Narita, the town in which Tokyo's international airport is located!
