Transit of Venus: Observations from Wellington, South Africa
http://www.saao
.ac.za/~wpk/tov1882/tovwell.htmlThe Transit of Venus
is similar to a solar eclipse, where -- from the perspective on Earth
-- Venus passes in front of the Sun. This event does not happen very
often. In fact, no one alive today has experienced this phenomenon,
which will take place on June 8 and will be visible for most of
Europe, Asia, and Africa.
First, the Armagh Planetarium
created a great, expansive informational site all about the Transit of
Venus (1). Users can find basic facts, observing information,
histories of past transits, and much more. Next, the European Southern
Observatory presents the VT-2004 project's aim to gain knowledge and
encourage public interest in the event (2). Users can observe Venus's
progression towards the transit with the daily images from April 17,
2004 to present news updates. Educators can discover transit-related
activities and educational materials. The third site, created by NASA,
discusses the details of the Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum and
San Francisco's Exploratorium's live webcast of the Transit (3). The
site supplies enjoyable, educational materials for students,
educators, museums, scientists, and amateur astronomers. The next
site, also created by NASA, provides an introduction to the Venus
Transits that will take place June 2004 and 2012 (4). Visitors can
find helpful figures and text about the geographic visibility of the
events. The site offers an observer's handbook as well as a discussion
about the predictions of the event. Next, Professor Backhaus presents
a project where schools, amateur astronomers, and universities will
collaborate to gather transit data and learn about observing (5).
Users can discover the six parts of the project as well as learn how
to participate in the worldwide endeavor. The sixth site also
discusses a Venus Transit project (6). Endorsed by the Astronomical
Association of Zurich, this project's goals are to process data
collected by amateur astronomers by different observation methods, to
act as a data exchange center, and to determine the astronomical unit.
Next, the Exploratorium furnishes general information about the
Transit, its history, how viewers observe it, what it looks like, and
why it is an important event (7). Users can find out about the live
webcast that will begin on June 7, 2004 from Athens, Greece. Educators
can find student activities developed to integrate discussions into
the classroom. Lastly, Willie Koorts, an employee at the South African
Astronomical Observatory, recounts the observations of scientists in
Africa of the last transit of Venus (8). The site contains many
historical photographs along with informational diagrams and
figures.[From The NSDL Scout Report for the Physical Sciences,

Meanwhile, I subscribe to a handy tool called [J-Pass Generator] that emails me the timely
details for spotting man-made satellites about to pass overhead my Zip
Code. If a NASA Shuttle is flying, you can also get the 411 on that
passage. Many of these objects are visible to the naked eye,
particularly the ISS, International Space Station. Celestial bodies
are best seen at night or near my neighbor's backyard pool.

Pretending to be a cook
03/28/2005 10:14 AMProgress on learning to cook like a proper human being has been
slow because I've been so busy the past month or so. But baby steps
are better than no steps at all and in the past weeks, I've tackled
cheeseburgers and pancakes. (Ok, you can stop snickering...I said
*baby steps*!)
The first time I tried frying up a burger, I filled my apartment
with the thick smell of burning cow flesh. Ok, medium heat then. After
that initial misstep, I got it down. Burger goes in the pan, flip it
once or twice, slap on a piece of cheese, and stick it on a bun with
lettuce, sliced raw onion, thinly sliced tomato (there can be no going
back to thickly sliced tomatoes now that I've done thin), mayo, and
ketchup. I've eaten better burgers, but I've never had one that was
more satisfying than one I've cooked myself. I can't wait until summer
rolls around...I'm going to get a little grill and have some friends
round for a BBQ** in the backyard.
The pancakes, oh, the pancakes were way yummier, fluffier, and
moister*** than I would have ever expected from a novice cook working
without a measuring cup on a halved recipe. I'm a fucking
pancake-making natural!
** Hello to my readership south of the Mason-Dixon. When you grow
up in Wisconsin, BBQ (or barbeque) means any meal cooked on a grill,
regardless of the presence of slow-cooking, smoked meat, or some kind
of sauce. Apologies to you and your delicious cuisine for my
unfortunate regional vernacular.
*** Oh, it's a word
alright.

In support of Robin Cook...
In support of Robin Cook...
03/19/2003 10:24 PMFor those Americans amongst our company who may not know who he is,
Robin Cook was, until this morning, Leader of the House of Commons. He
was a high-placed member of the British cabinet, and an ex-Foreign
Minister. Today he resigned in protest at what he believes to be the
innappropriate rush to go to war without the support of our
international allies. He gave a rousing and intelligent speech in the
House of Commons that has been circulated on all the UK TV stations,
and which received a standing ovation from his colleagues. I can't as
yet find a transcript online, but I've found a RealAudio version from the BBC. I advise everyone to watch it.
Addendum: Here's a transcript
of the speech from the BBC.

Holiday present for an aspiring cook
Holiday present for an aspiring cook
12/19/2004 03:21 PMOver the next few weeks, I may or may not continue to recommend things
I love for your holiday gift consideration. But today I offer Tom
Colicchio's Think Like a Chef. Mr. Colicchio is chef/owner of both
(the amazing and yummy!) Gramercy Tavern and Craft, in New York City.
This cookbook is less about recipes -- though it certainly has them --
and more about cooking technique and philosophy, enabling the reader
to actually learn by doing rather than simply follow a list and
instructions. I've found it very useful and informative and it's
quickly become one of my favorites on my cookbook shelf. When I
started working in the kitchen this past fall, I was surprised to find
how much I already knew. This book contributed to my knowledge and
made my transition from aspiring amateur to aspiring professional that
much easier. A great gift for someone who really does want to learn
how to, "think like a chef."

Cook Quits Over Iraq Crisis
Cook Quits Over Iraq Crisis
03/19/2003 10:27 PMDavid Mitchell, a 38 year old cook from South London, dramatically
quit his high-school canteen job today in a personal protest over the
looming war in Iraq.
According to a press release later
issued by Mitchell, he took his dramatic action following the decision
yesterday by the US, UK and Spanish governments to give Saddam Hussein
one final day to comply with UN Convention 1442. Mitchell, who had
been employed by Vauxhall Education Authority for 6 years, took his
kitchen co-workers by surprise with his anti-war outburst shortly
after 9am this morning.
"I'm fed-up to the back teeth with
the oppressive and imperialistic stance that the US and British
governments have taken over this bleedin' Iraq issue." said Mitchell
in a prepared press release. Mitchell went on to say, "It's about
bloody time people took a stand against this unfair and unlawful
action and I for one feel very strongly about this however, I do very
much regret that my actions today could mean that many of our pupils
will not be able to benefit from a full and nutritious menu this
lunchtime. I just hope that the kids don't hold it against me and that
history will prove to be my judge."
Mitchell gave his
employers little notice of his intention to walk out and school
headmaster, Reg Harris OBE, was said to be somewhat "Distressed and
shaken" at the prospect of a limited lunch menu on a Monday,
notoriously the most depressing day of the week for many schools.
Arrangements were being made to provide counseling for pupils unable
to cope with the fact that chips would now be off the menu for the
foreseeable future. Mitchell was unavailable for further comment.

Speaking of Transit Watching. I found it really interesting to see
the collection of AP photos about the transit of Venus today.
Apparently the compelling story is not so much the science (planets
orbit the sun, got it), but the global spectacle. It's a bit of an
anomaly of late, but Venus watching seems to be something the whole
world peacefully agrees is a good thing. [
