Cellphone as Virtual Mouse, Keyboard

"stab writes 'Check this out! High Energy Magic have announced a public beta of software to let you use your camera-phone as a physical mouse by just pointing and clicking and rotating it in the air. Some very cool videos available: check out the volume control and flight booking ones in particular! The tags used are really robust - they did a wa stebasket torture test for a bit of fun as well.' The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. Kim Komando did a nice article on buying camera phones recently. She discusses the importance of checking out the quality of the phone by reading reviews and being selective when choosing a wireless carrier. She then goes on to advise that you “try it before you buy it”. Snap some photos to see how the images turn out. Her message is clear as she explains that you need to know what to expect from your carrier and what features you are wanting from your phone.

Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones

Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones 12/08/2003 04:42 AM
Mobile phone signal jammers are illegal in the US, but that doesn't mean they're not used. They're apparently increasingly common, and are expected to spread quite a bit in the near future. The FCC says that using a jammer is considered "theft" of airwaves, because that spectrum has been allocated as property to a commercial entity. The writer of the article wonders, though, about "passive jamming" - such as putting up buildings made of material that block out cell phone signals. While some don't like the idea of having their signals blocked - others think it may become a lot more popular in the future, if only to have areas to "disconnect". The article points to the rise of camera phones as a "bottom up surveillance society" as a reason why we might want areas that have no signal. That makes little sense to me, since anyone using a camera phone can still snap the picture, and then just upload it later when they're in range of a signal. Still, it will be interesting to see if anti-jamming equipment becomes popular. Most people have no idea if a jammer is being used, since it just looks like there's no service. This makes it very difficult to figure out if someone is using a jammer, and means that no one's getting caught using these things right now.

Data Backup For Cell Phones

New software will allow cell phone users to back up/edit SIM data without having to be bound to their keypad. With this software, you will have support for a variety of SIM card types and styles. This will certainly be handy, especially for backing up cell phone data such as address book contents and other important information. If I had a dollar for every time I have lost my data due to a bad SIM. Grrr.

Mobile Users Top 1.5 Billion

"As of the first week of June 2004, the mobile service industry broke the 1.5 billion subscriber mark worldwide. Research firm EMC also predicts that the industry will pass the 2 billion mark as early as 2006, far earlier than some other predictions, and reach 2.45 billion by the end of 2009." [infoSync World]

Guess where a lot of that growth is going to come from?

G eneration Text

"New research from Mobile Youth - a mobile telecoms consultancy - found that 700,000 (20%) of primary school children own mobile phones and that the under 10s "represent the fastest-growing segment of mobile phone ownership within Britain".

'They are the key fashion accessory which no self respecting child can do without,' says the report. It predicts that by 2006, more than one million primary school kids (a third of all five-to-nine year olds) will own mobiles." [The Guardian]
