Data collection is easy, analysis is
hard
01/11/2004 06:02 PM That U.S. intelligence agencies confuse terrorists with
children on passenger jets is a reminder that data collection is
easy, but data analysis is hard. That must be why the six-year-old
daughter of one of Boing Boing's co-founders is
on the CAPPS list as a security risk. All this is also a
reminder that we need
privacy
safeguards for these data mining programs.

The Dirty Data Saga Continues:
Newspapers Doing More Damage Than Good
08/04/2004 01:34 PMAdam Penenberg has already
taken
on the NY Times for becoming less relevant to people today, due to
their "behind the registration wall" news concept. Now, he's picking
up on the
dirty
data concept and admitting that
he usually
lies when registering for any news site, in part because those
sites never
give
users anything of value in return for all your personal
information. Penenberg took a very unscientific sample poll among
people he knew, and it appears that most of the provide bogus
information or use the two best tools on the internet for actually
being able to read news: BugMeNot and Mailinator. Of course, the
response from the registration required sites is always the same.
They "need" to do this to give their advertisers more targeted info,
so they can sell higher priced ads. However, there are two very major
problems (which almost everyone sees, except those working on
registration required sites): (1) if the data is bad, the advertisers
may get suckered a few times into paying higher fees, but not for long
and (2) if readers keep getting pissed off and just decide to go
elsewhere, there won't be anyone's eyeballs to sell to advertisers
anyway. Requiring registration is a short term strategy. It shrinks
inventory and gives advertisers a fake reason to spend more. The end
result is that advertisers will learn. They'll refuse to spend so
much, and the sites will be stuck with lower traffic levels. How that
makes sense long term is beyond me.

Unitarianism: good enough for two

Unitarianism: good enough for two
presidents, not good enough for Texas
05/19/2004 02:47 AMThe state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status
because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia
notes, Presidents
John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the
Unitarians' religiosity that they actually
were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government
agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's
religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly
infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president
for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by
the comptroller's office.

The man who, between the two major candidates in 2000, got the fewer

GM in trouble: "If you erased the
company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic
accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek
protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. "
GM's troubles are as much a result of the
exploding costs of health
care as they are due to the company's
dropping market
share. In
Canada increasing
health care costs (PDF with many
charts) are taking a greater and greater share of
government expenditures. In the US
it's hurting big employers and
regular people.
But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time
soon.

A Collection of Conundrums...
A Collection of Conundrums...
12/09/2003 05:00 PMHow to talk about thoughts about work (in public) that I need to
articulate and work through a bit without said thoughts taking on a
political dimension - feeling like part of some attempt to game social
reality. How to deal with personal frustrations (or let those
frustrations go) without projecting perceived inadequacies onto other
people. How to reconcile the satisfaction of a work that will result
in something made with the desire to work on a subject that
you're passionate about. How to know when one is doing that. How to
think about what's next without sorting out what is. How to
handle the frustrations of watching other people do work in places
where you used to be the only person who cared. How do deal with
people communicating things you want to communicate but didn't think
you should. How to not sound shrill and callous and vengeful and
bloody. How to not sound desperate and flighty and trivial and fake.
How to tell whether your impression of things is a lie or not.
These being an adequate representation of the conundrums I find
myself dealing with on a Tuesday evening, because it would of
course be too much for me to scratch out any kind of mental
peace.
My head, unfortunately, is far from in the position to do its best
thinking. My blood feels like it has thickened to the consistency of
thick pressurised loam, to be forced at pressure through brain-flesh,
capillary and straining vein. Mental clarity is unlikely to be found
in such a state. So I shall have a bath and go to bed. In the
meantime: Conundrum vs. Conundra.
