Opportunity put in Deep Sleep Mode

Opportunity put in Deep Sleep Mode

Opportunity put in Deep Sleep Mode 05/27/2004 12:28 PM

Opportunity is now start to use on a frequent basis the Deep Sleep mode where the rover is basically shut all the way down to conserve power. Spirit has not had to be put in that mode as all of it's on-board components continue to work as they are supposed to. With the malfunctioning switch keeping a heater on at night on Opportunity the rover was only getting 2-3 hours of work each day. [MarsToday]

LazyWeb, while you sleep

LazyWeb, while you sleep 04/10/2005 02:16 PM

I often have dreams that feature technology ideas, but I don't always remember them and more often than not they're just goofy ideas. This morning's dream is somewhat in the goofy category but might be useful to some, and since I remember all of it in detail I'll relate it here.

So I'm stopping by Andy's office in Santa Monica to go have lunch (I think I was on a roadtrip in my dream), and while he steps away to grab his jacket I notice there's an IM window scrolling past with loads of text. When he gets back a few seconds later I ask him what that is, and he says he's watching the Simpsons over IM.

I say "you're doing what? how?" and he explains it, and this is way more detail than I normally remember in dreams, but I thought it was such a cool idea I think I kind of "saved" it so I would remember later. So he goes on, explaining how he built a chatbot that is wired to a stream of TV closed captioning, so you add captionbot to your buddy list, then talk to it. You ask it what's on TV right now, and it returns a list of shows, you pick a show and it starts streaming out dialogue from characters, directly via closed caption data. "It's like watching a show in text" I say and then we go off to lunch.

And that's all I remember. Andy built a really cool text adventure bot last year, and TVeyes is basically Technorati for TV (though they predate Technorati by several years), searching caption histories for words or phrases. I doubt you can get real time caption data and I'm not even sure if reading a tv show would be interesting, but I figured I'd share the dream with everyone, in case someone feels like building it.

Get Your Own Sleep Room

Get Your Own Sleep Room 06/14/2004 03:33 AM
Some people take sleep very seriously. Not getting enough sleep is much more dangerous than most people realize, but it's become more common in our society for people to be chronically sleep deprived. The problem is apparently quite an issue in Japan, where Matsushita has developed a $30,000 sleep room system designed to help ease you into and out of sleep. The system includes an automatically adjusting bed, a TV showing soothing images, a sound system playing relaxing sounds and (my personal favorite) a bed designed to massage you gently into sleep. The system can be used for a cat nap or a full night's sleep. Either way, it appears that folks in Japan are quite excited about this sort of research - as an associated picture with the article shows Japanese office workers taking their naps in the company's showroom that demonstrates a number of recliners.

Big Sleep for Bonzo

Big Sleep for Bonzo 06/08/2004 05:02 PM
BoingBoing pal Gareth Branwyn points us to some spectacular spleen-venting over the case of Alzheimer's that America appears to be having over Ronald Reagan's presidency. Tom Carson in the Village Voice. Sorry for the spoiler, but here's the final line: "The best that can be said for Ronald Reagan is that, if George W. Bush gets re-elected, we may yet end up missing him."
Ronald Reagan is the man who destroyed America's sense of reality -- a paltry target, all in all, given our predilections. It only took an actor: the real successor to John Wilkes Booth. In our bones, we had always been this sort of bullshit-craving country anyhow, founded on abstractions: not land (somebody else's), not people (Red Rover, Red Rover, send Emma Lazarus right over), not even shared history (nostalgia isn't the same thing, and try pulling that Civil War Shinola anywhere west of the Rio Grande). Just monumental words and wordy monuments, with two convenient oceans between them and circumstance; from Nat Turner's status as three-fifths of a man -- even though we ended up hanging all of him -- to Reagan's child Lynndie England (b. 1983, the year we invaded Grenada and lost 241 Marines in Lebanon), any shortfall could be blamed on something lost in translation. But it was Reagan, whose most profound Freudian slip was the immortal "Facts are stupid things," who beguiled us into living in the theme park full-time, and so much for the Declaration of Independence's prattle about "a decent respect to the opinions of mankind" -- actually the only time we ever expressed much concern for those. Since his 1980 opponent, Jimmy Carter, was about the sorriest embodiment of the reality principle imaginable -- Three's Company's Mr. Roper on the world-historical stage -- facts didn't have a prayer.

Usually, you want a shell script to just run to completion, one command after another. There are times, however, when a sequence of events includes a step upon which subsequent steps depend for successful execution. For these times, two useful commands are wait and sleep, both of which cause a delay in the script execution.

Matsushita's "sleep room" for insomniacs

Matsushita's "sleep room" for insomniacs 06/14/2004 11:40 AM
Next June, Japan's Matsushita will start selling a "sleep room" for insomniacs. USA Today's description of it reminds me of the euthanasia room from Soylent Green. You get into the bed, which is "upright like a recliner." A giant TV screen shows a video clip of a river in a forest, while soft music and nature sounds play in the background. A little while later, the lights dim, the TV shuts off, and the bed reclines. The river soundtrack continues to play. Then the massage machinery inside the mattress kicks in and kneads away the tension from your body. Finally, the lights go out and some air is released from the mattress, and you fall asleep -- hopefully.
At Matsushita, a night of rest isn't cheap. Rieko Saitoh, a company publicist, says the whole system is expected to go on sale in June 2005 — to the tune of $30,000.

Still, company officials say that even if the price is high, customers won't lose much sleep over it.

"Nobody who's come in here for 30 minutes hasn't fallen asleep," said Heiuchi.
