Rebirth (Reuters)
05/27/2004 07:50 AMReuters - The use of a mobile phone to pinpoint
a caller's location and nearby businesses was a hot concept
when the tech bubble peaked in 2000, but only now with better
phones and software does it stand to succeed, companies say.
Mobile operators are selling much-improved services that help
users locate friends or get directions to the nearest train
station, but they have to fight off consumers' bad memories
from 2000 and 2001, when they offered illegible maps on tiny
black-and-white screens.

06/29/2004 07:09 AMToday, Microsoft Corp. and European mobile operators O2 and
TeliaSonera announced plans to deliver real-time location services
designed to enable businesses to significantly improve the way they
locate, track and manage their mobile assets and mobile work force.
The real-time location services are built around Microsoft®
MapPoint® Location Server (MLS) and enable developers, independent
software vendors (ISVs) and system integrators to create and deploy
location-aware business applications for their customers by combining
the real-time location data from the O2 and TeliaSonera networks with
the rich mapping and location capabilities from the Microsoft MapPoint
Web Service.

06/03/2004 01:35 PMThough it's impossible to consider without thinking of the
inevitable exploits (from Big Brotherish agencies and rowdy script
kiddies alike), Intel has said they are developing support within
their mobile processor line to allow computers to be aware of their
physical location at all times. Although nothing is set in stone yet,
Intel is working with others (Microsoft, for example) to add features
that would integrate simple things like, say, selection of which
printer to use based on proximity into future laptops and mobile
devices. Sounds okay, but also the sort of thing that will probably
hit all at once as mobile phones are already gaining GPS abilities and
Bluetooth short range communication -- soon all of our devices will
know where you are and will be happy to tattle to each other where
you're hiding, whether you like it or not.

Services that insert sounds into mobile

Services that insert sounds into mobile
phone conversations
02/01/2005 08:38 PMXeni Jardin:
A growing number of tech providers now offer "sound insertion"
services for mobile phone users. Think: ringtones you plug into the
"body" of a voice conversation. Sonic emoticons. Ronan Higgins of
cafe.com says:
Lightwav for PalmOne Treo
smartphones has a feature called "CoverUp Sound" where you can trigger
sounds to play in the phone conversation.
I hear that this application is popular in Japan with cheating
"salary men" husbands. They'll trigger sounds of a train station, a
busy office or a bar, while explaining to their wives why they won't
be home until later. Single men trigger the sound of a girl in the
background saying "come back to bed" to make their male friends
jealous.
I use it to insert a bad connection effect: "I can't hear you, you're
breaking up on me, I'm losing signal, I'll have to call you back about
that. Kshhhh."
In related news -- last week, San Francisco-based Phonebites
nabbed a US$3MM
venture round. They, too, offer a service that allows mobile phone
users to insert a pre-recorded sound clip into a live conversation -
like a radio soundboard, but for your cell phone. Here's a related
Engadget post from last October:

Update: BB reader Daniel says,
There's also such an application available for Seiries60 smartphones.
The app is called CallCheater. And it works quite nicely.

Location Based Services Becoming A
Reality
Location Based Services Becoming A
Reality
04/12/2004 03:27 PMNow that more and more cars are coming with built in navigation
systems, they may no longer be necessary. Lots of companies have been
working on building navigation systems for mobile phones, and this
review of such a system from
Televigation on a Nextel phone suggests that they may be ready for
primetime - especially considering the price differential between a
$2,000 in-dash system and a $6/month system on your phone. While the
in-dash system includes a bigger screen, and potentially more
features, the fact that the mobile phone can be used anywhere (such as
a rental car) and that all the heavy lifting occurs on a server (where
the data is more likely to be up-to-date) may suggest that in-dash
navigation systems don't have much of a future. What's more likely,
of course, is that via Bluetooth, or some similar technology, such
applications on a mobile phone will be connected to the in-dash
display (and the vehicle's speakers) to make the overall navigation
experience adjust to the situation. As the article suggests, this is
only the beginning of location-based services in mobile phones, but by
piggy-backing on a service that people understand already, it will
make it easier to gain more widespread adoption. After that,
additional value added features will start to appear.

e911 cell phone location query
e911 cell phone location query
01/02/2004 12:02 PMMind some dumb-ass questions about cell phone location technology and
policy for something I'm writing? I'm having trouble finding a site on
the Web that talks about this at a sufficient level of ignorance. I
understand that by 2005, 95% of cell phones in the US need to be able
to broadcast their location with an accuracy of 50-150m. This is part
of the FCC's e911 ("Enhanced 911") act. Here's what I don't
understand: 1. The wireless carriers are required to track that
information only if you make a 911 call. But will my cell phone be
broadcasting its location...
Camera Phone Photos For Location Info?
Camera Phone Photos For Location Info?
04/12/2004 03:44 AM
As the major media and short-sighted analysts continue to trash camera
phones for their poor resolution, some people are actually realizing
that it's not the camera that makes it interesting, but the fact that
the
camera is connected. Here's yet another example of some
people trying to take advantage of a camera phone for its ability to
do something that a regular camera cannot do. Everyone is talking
about location-based services, and one of the reasons why many think
they're finally set to take off is that most new phones have GPS
included as part of the efforts to get E-911 location services in
place for emergency phone calls. However, once that GPS is there,
lots of people see the ability to do other services. The problem,
though, is that GPS has some weaknesses - especially in urban areas.
So, some researchers from the UK are working on photo-recognition
software that would let someone take a camera phone photo of a
building, send it off to a server, and the
softwar
e on the server would figure out where the person was and even
send them back directions to their destination. Of course, this seems
like quite a lot of effort, especially considering that GPS is already
pretty good and will only get better at filling in where it currently
has problems. Still, the researchers claim that the advantage of
their system is that it can also tell which direction the person is
facing and thus give them clearer directions ("go left" instead of
"head west"). Still, is that really worth money to people?
Furthermore, it seems like there are two huge hurdles to this system:
(a) they need to create and maintain a
huge database of
up-to-date images of building photos and (b) make sure the software
can recognize the buildings taken from different angles and distances
in variable lighting and weather conditions. It seems difficult to
believe that the combination of the database and the software can be
good enough at a reasonable enough cost that it's worthwhile for
enough people to actually use the service. So, while this particular
application might not go very far, it is still an interesting look at
a way to take advantage of what makes a camera phone special.

Are Mobile Phones Disconnecting Us From
Geographic Location?
11/18/2003 05:51 AMIt's happened to most of us, I'm sure. You're traveling somewhere,
and you receive a phone call on your mobile phone, and you explain to
the person that you're not in your hometown, but 3,000 miles away. An
architecture critic is now complaining that the real problem with
mobile phone use in public isn't that it bugs other people, but that
it
r
emoves our sense of place and removes us from connecting with the
location we're actually in at the moment. He's particularly upset
that people walking around talking on their mobile phones aren't
"experiencing" the urban landscape around them (no surprise that this
comes from an architecture critic, whose very
job is to notice
the urban landscape around him). Instead, he complains that we're
barely connected to our physical location, and quick to jump to the
virtual location of our mobile phones. Of course, even if he's right,
I wonder if that's such a terrible thing. No one is being
forced to ignore their surroundings - and if the mobile phone
opens up
new or
different landscapes around them (real
or virtual) all it's doing is adding more options. Found via
Gizmodo.

Microsoft Patent of the Week: Method and
system for determining the location of a
mobile computer
12/30/2003 02:40 AM"A mobile computer establishes a wireless communication session with a
wireless access point of a computer network. The location of each
wireless access point is known and obtainable either from a database
on the network or from the access points themselves. The strengths of
wireless signals passing between the mobile computer and multiple
wireless access points of the network, including the access point with
which the mobile computer has established the session are measured at
multiple time intervals. The measurements may be taken at the mobile
computer itself or at the wireless access points. The measured
strength values are then weighted according to such factors as whether
the mobile computer has already established a communication session
with the access point from which the sample was taken, and how old the
sample is. For each location, the weighted strength values obtained
for access points in that location are summed. The location having the
highest sum is deemed to be the location of the mobile computer. "
