Microsoft to Offer a Media-Player-Free

Microsoft to Offer a Media-Player-Free
Version of Windows by January
12/24/2004 12:25 PM
On Wednesday, the European Court judge overseeing the European Union vs. Microsoft antitrust case did what many observers thought he would not. He denied Microsoft's request that the ordered remedies (including the unbundling of Windows Media Player from Windows) be postponed. Whether or not Microsoft appeals his denial, the Redmond software giant said it will deliver to European OEMs starting in January a Windows-Media-Player-free version of Windows. Microsoft also will publish communications protocols, including some heretofore-unpublished Windows Server ones, as part of the judge's order.

'Look and Shoot' Helmets 06/15/2004 08:33 AM

joint-helmet.jpg imageBat eyelashes, destroy enemy fighter -- at least if you're wearing of the 2,000 new Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) helmets from Boeing just ordered up by the Pentagon. By simply lining up a yellow targeting cross and pressing a button, pilots can aim weapons and sensors onto whatever they happen to be looking at, in the air or on the ground. In addition, the JHMCS display all sorts of other useful information, like altitude, airspeed, G's (upper and lower case), angle of attack, and Kenny Loggins playlists. Don't miss Defense Tech's hard-hitting editor Noah Shachtman use news of the technology as an excuse to talk about his girlfriend's couch.

The iPod is proving a colossal hit on the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony's own turf. The tiny white machine is catching on as a fashion statement and turning into a cultural icon in Japan, much the same way it won a fanatic following in the United States. Although Apple doesn't release regional sales figures, six of the top eight selling music players in Japan are iPod models, according to a market research company. Starting Oct. 1, discount retailer Costco will begin selling a US$269.99 iPod mini bundle on its Web site. In addition to a standard 4GB iPod mini in pink, silver or blue, the package includes a gift certificate for 15 songs from the iTunes Music Store and Apple's iPod mini Armband, which appears to be the same one sold on the online Apple Store for $29. Given that the gift certificate and armband are worth $43.85, this bundle enables you to purchase an iPod mini for $226.14. Costco.com is not currently offering the green and gold iPod mini colors, however.

Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player

Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player 08/23/2004 10:51 AM

auvi-thumb.jpg imageNow this is the way to challenge the iPod: go smaller. While most players appeal to the nerd core by packing in tons of obscure (if welcome) features, the Auvi SA1500 tries a different tack, cramming a 20GB hard drive into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini. Add in a 20 hour playback time and it's easy to call this one a contender even without having seen one in person. The price is too high; UK retailer Firebox is expected to have them on sale soon for around $450, although for whatever reason the UK always seems to get nailed with higher prices, so a US model would probably be cheaper. If they can get it out there, though, and not screw up the user interface, the SA1500 will definitely turn a few heads.
