Principles

More from the marketing side of things, web design means a whole different thing than most of us think. For "them", the essence of a Web site is self-service.

Marathon training principles 06/17/2004 08:31 AM
From Runner's World, common sense 10 Principles of Marathon Training: A marathon training program can survive any challenge -- as long as your determination remains strong. Here are 10 principles to carry you through your training. From my four and seven-year-old cousins when I told them I was going to run the NYC Marathon: Cousins: How far is a marathon? Meg: How far do you think it is? C: Ten miles? M: Guess again. C: 20 miles? M: More than that, keep guessing. C: 300 miles?! M: Oh no, not 300. Only 26 miles. But still, that's like four hours of running non-stop! C (McKenna): Oh, that's not so bad. That's only sixty minutes. Plus sixty minutes. Plus sixty minutes. Plus sixty minutes. And she's right. I know I can run sixty minutes. Now I'll just do it four times in a row.

Google's spyware best-principles
proposal

Google's spyware best-principles
proposal
05/19/2004 01:27 AM
Google has posted a list of proposed best-practices for Internet software, such as toolbars, which aims at separating spyware from other apps. One of the big problems with the spyware fight is that the legal theories employed (as in the lawsuits against Gator) often have the potential to break the Internet in important ways. For example, the plaintiffs in Gator say that Gator violates their copyright in their webpages by putting new windows onscreen when they're loaded with competitors' info (i.e., you load up www.deliveryservice1.com and a window pops up for deliveryservice2.com). If a court agrees with this theory, it means that the org responsible for the contents of the foremost window in your browser get to control all the other windows on your screen -- that you violate their copyright if you install, say, a price-comparator that loads Amazon's comparable sell-pages when you bring up a bn.com page so that you can check who's cheapest.

Google's principles seem, to me, to be much more thoughtful and respectful of the Internet and its users. They revolve around key notions in consumer protection: clarity, honesty, and easy opt-out. Not committing fraud, IOW.

Applications that affect or change your user experience should make clear they are the reason for those changes. For example, if an application opens a window, that window should identify the application responsible for it. Applications should not intentionally obscure themselves under multiple or confusing names. You should be given means to control the application in a straightforward manner, such as by clicking on visible elements generated by the application. If an application shows you ads, it should clearly mark them as advertising and inform you that they originate from that application. If an application makes a change designed to affect the user experience of other applications (such as setting your home page) then those changes should be made clear to you.

Here're my running notes from Donald A. Norman's Em otional Design: The Principles talk at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
I no longer tell you why everything is crappy -- now I'm the guy who tells you how nice and pretty things can be.

The orange juicer on the cover of my new book, Emotional Design, evokes strong emotion.

I'm here to talk about consumer products, not computers.

Getting the tech right is only part of the problem: the big part is the hearts and minds, so your customers enjoy it.

There's something about physical design that really turns people on. The tech has to be flaawlessly, but no one cares about it -- it's just infrastructure.

See the Mini Cooper -- the NYT said, "It has many flaws, but boy is it fun."

I used to buy stuff that I knew was b0rked, but I wanted to own them anyway.

Recent Interest Rate Hike Marks
Beginning of Higher Cost in Loans Says
Kingdom Financial Principles
07/07/2004 02:59 AM
The handwriting is on the wall that the era of low interest rate loans is about to give way to a series of interest rate hikes. The benchmark interest rate moved up by one quarter percent for the first time in four years as the Federal Reserve upped the cost of overnight loans to financial institutions. Although the blow of further rate increases is being cushioned by the language of a “measured” pace for these increases, investors and potential home owners can only hope for comparative low rates for only a few more months. The phrase “if you want anything done do it yourself” has never been more relevant than with the looming crisis facing retirees hoping to survive on Social Security benefits. More to the point, the pool of income funding Social Security will not be enough to supply the benefits needed by the large baby boom generation. While the government will do what it can to ease the coming storm, it is the upcoming retirees themselves who must take matters into their own hands. [PRWEB Sep 2, 2004]

THE THREE
PRINCIPLES

THE THREE
PRINCIPLES
12/24/2004 01:05 PM
Grandfather and Young Owl stood overlooking the canyon, their arms resting on the wooden railing.

"You know", Grandfather said, "that in Chumash legend, each of the four seasons has a unique set of associations." He described the four quadrants, sketching with his hand in the air as he did:

North
Winter / Night
White
Eagle: Strength and Pride
Bear: Earth Unity, Humility

West
Fall / Evening
Red
Dolphin: Connection, Friendship
Raven: The Messenger
compass
East
Spring / Morning
Yellow
Hawk: Recovery, Courage
Deer: Life's Abundance

South
Summer / Afternoon
Blue
Owl: Wisdom, Intelligence
Snake: Sensitivity to Earth

"The Chumash always believed that Nature is sacred and understood evolution long before Darwin explained it to the White Man, who is still reluctant to understand his place. They would be wise to understand the three principles by which we have lived in harmony with all life on Earth since we first emerged from the Sky and the Earth and the Water:
  • The Principle of Limitation: The understanding that we are all limited, all capable in different ways, and all equal, and that we depend on and are responsible for each other, that without Community we are nothing.
  • The Principle of Moderation: The understanding that we must take only what we need from the land and the ocean, and give back as much as we take, and waste nothing, and live according to Nature's time.
  • The Principle of Compensation: The understanding that we must give without expecting in return, and be kind, and recognize that compensation comes in many forms."
"These are simple lessons. The Winter is our time of renewal. It is a time of contemplation, rest, and gathering strength for the ordeals that still lie ahead of us. The White Man's culture of occupation and scarcity is relentless and threatens everything. Even those that understand this cannot understand why we don't join them in their fight to defeat this culture. But no one can save them from themselves, Young Owl. Our task is to hold up a mirror to them, and let them see the madness in their own lives. Our task is to show them, just in case they want to learn, a better way to live. These Newcomers will defeat themselves, and then, just as after the great flood before our time, those who remain will learn again, freed from occupation and scarcity, to live in Nature's time. For us, there is only the waiting."

.

Dear friends, may this season be a time of renewal and contemplation and peace for you, a time of sharing, and a time of gathering strength for the struggles ahead.

I'll be back on Boxing Day.
