Engadet reports on Aiwa's new ¥15,000 headphones, which can take standard audio input and play it through and/or record it as an MP3 to its built-in 128MB of memory. It's a great idea, and I can think of a million things I would love to use them for, from recording tracks off vinyl records to the air-traffic control chatter on Channel 12 on United flights. Link

CD Input and Col Library 0.72 (Default

CD Input and Col Library 0.72 (Default
branch)
02/01/2005 09:46 PM
The Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS- and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660 filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.
Changes:
The cdparanoia library and cdparanoia command are now included, making this the only single-source cdparanoia that works on FreeBSD, Cygwin, Solaris, BSDI, and GNU/Linux. The manual documentation and API documentation (via doxygen) were reworked, the internal filesystem structure was reorganized, and a number of platform-specific bugfixes and fixes for C++ compilation were made.

Dynamically Typed: Character Encodings
and Input

Dynamically Typed: Character Encodings
and Input
04/19/2005 08:44 AM
Text formats use character encodings to map characters to their binary representation. When using only characters in the ASCII range (US English), character encodings seem to 'just work'. You may never even be aware of the character encoding you are using. This is because the ASCII characters are represented the same way in all of the popular character encodings used on the Web, so if you never need a foreign character you won't ever encounter a problem. However, once you deviate from this common denominator of ASCII characters and start using characters from foreign languages, their representation in binary form may depend on the character encoding used, and if you get the encoding confused you can end up with invalid characters.

A first look at Vector Linux 4.0, SOHO

04/09/2004 04:04 PM
Vector Linux has always interested me because of its purpose and origin: a simplified distribution from a Slackware base. Last month Vector's developers announced the first release candidate for Vector Linux 4.0 SOHO edition. Since, to quote Vector's main page, Slackware Linux has always been "about as user-friendly as a coiled rattlesnake," I was curious to see how Vector Linux addressed these issues for home users while still keeping the Slackware reliability and speed. I'm sorry to report that their efforts have not been especially successful.
