The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
It seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank wanted to reach a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier. TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about "media literacy" which claims its looking for a " middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the internet as is, and that there should be a separate internet that is more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is designed from the wrong mindset. The internet is not a content platform, but a communications one. This article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform -- for the sake of the content providers.

The Vatican Ponders Robot Films

The Vatican Ponders Robot Films 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
According to a ZENIT news release, the Vatican is thinking about robots. They've decided to make the relationship between man and machines the topic of their annual Third-Millennium Spiritual Film Festival. And to coincide with the film festival, a study congress sponsored by the pontifical councils for Social Communications and for Culture, will reflect on the ethical questions posed by "Man-Machine Hybridization". Cardinal Paul Poupard, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said that "the machine seems to be the negation of man and robotics the annulment of the spiritual dimension." But he also goes on to say that modern man cannot do without technology. It sounds like some weird stuff - hopefully the full text of the council's study will be made available later.

Truth?

Rape, Torture, and Lies An ongoing Canadian saga has a sad new twist today: photojournalist Ziba Zahra Kazemi was likely brutally tortured and raped before her death in Iran in 2003. Arrested after a demonstration, the official Iranian line has been that her death was an accident due to injuries from a fall. The ER doctor who treated her has now spoken out, after being granted refugee status in Canada. Wikipedia has an excellent outline of the entire story.

Hoder ponders what he should do to prevent similar treatment when he returns to Iran. What sort of pressure can help prevent governments from doing such terrible things? Can we help protect Hoder? Hoder says that credentials from a Canadian magazine would help. Can someone help him out?
