Another Tapwave Zodiac review
11/14/2003 04:03 PMAnother review of the new Zodiac, Tapwave's Palm PDA designed
specifically for playing games, this one by Mike Langberg of the San
Jose Mercury News. Like almost everyone else who seems to have gotten
their hands on one, Mike likes it quite a bit, saying that it has the
best screen he's ever seen on a handheld. He does make one good point
about the Zodiac though, that there will probably be limited number of
top-quality games available to play on it. Since the Zodiac costs a
lot more than a Game Boy Advance, Tapwave isn't likely to sell more
than a few hundred thousand of them (at best), which is too few for
most game developers to bother creating titles that really take
advantage of its capabilities. Read...

Tapwave Zodiac in Retail
06/18/2004 04:17 PM
MATT GALLANT -- The Tapwave Zodiac, the
PDA/MP3 player/Game Platform has snuck into the retail channel a few
days before its scheduled June 24th ship date. NYC J&R Music and
Computer World stores and, by extension, Amazon.com now have both the
32MB and the 128MB models available.
With a nice 480x320 16-bit display, an analog control stick, a mess
o' gaming adapted buttons, all running on PalmOS 5.2T, the Zodiac sure
looks like a neat PDA for someone with a gaming streak.

Tapwave Zodiac in Stores June 24th
06/10/2004 07:55 AM
Make it or break it time for Tapwave as they confirm
a June 24th retail launch date in CompUSA stores for their
PalmOS-based gaming PDA Zodiac. Tapland confirms that the Zodiac will
have at least a 4-foot dedicated shelf space and a full marketing
rollout with all the usual ads and promotions, I would imagine. It's
not a CompUSA exclusive, either -- both J&R and Amazon have
started dropping information about their intention to carry the
Zodiac, as well. I don't have huge hopes for the Zodiac; I hate to be
such a fuddy-duddy about it, but I just can't see them blowing up
without the support of the major game publishers. Still, if they can
capture the Palm purchasers who wouldn't mind playing a game or
two on the side, they might be able to carve out a nice little niche
for themselves.

FTC Cracks Down On CompUSA Over Bogus
Rebate Program
FTC Cracks Down On CompUSA Over Bogus
Rebate Program
03/14/2005 05:27 PMThe
rebat
e scam used by consumer electronics firms is fairly well known.
Basically, the retailers advertise a very low price, but the only way
to get it is to pay a much higher price and send away for a rebate
(which
many
people forget to do). However, most of these retailers contract
out the rebate programs to firms who have the incentive to figure out
ways to deny or delay your rebate. This includes common tactics like
denying the rebate for some random reason or waiting until you called
to send out the rebate (and then telling you "it just went out
yesterday..."). While it's always done by third party firms, it looks
like the retailers are finally getting in trouble for the practice.
Last year, the state of Ohio
crack
ed down on Best Buy for rebate failures, and now the FTC and
CompUSA have
settled charges
concerning false rebate info, including delaying payments
(promised in six to eight weeks) for many months.

When MTI Micro
Fuel Cells decided to show off their 'Mobion' fuel cells, they threw
one on the back of a Tapwave Zodiac, which as Tapland's Scott
Raulinaitis points out, makes it extremely clear exactly how big these
cells will be. I wouldn't mind the size, actually, if MTI could tell
us exactly what sort of power time we could expect out of
fill-your-own fuel cells. "2 to 10 times longer" is just a little too
vague for me. Still, methanol-powered gadgets? Maybe I could start
distilling my own at home.
