Runco High-Altitude Plasma

Runco High-Altitude Plasma

Runco High-Altitude Plasma 05/27/2004 06:25 AM

I didn't realize it was a problem, but apparently Runco has released a variation of their high-end plasma TV line that works in high-altitude settings over 9,000 feet. I don't know what causes normal plasma displays to have the problem...

Navy's SA-60 High-Altitude Blimp

Navy's SA-60 High-Altitude Blimp 07/06/2004 11:39 AM

CyberAerospacePhotos781.jpg imageNow I'm not saying the Navy's new spherical test blimps look like giant, fake space breasts -- just because there's a circle within a circle and a little nipple-looking bit doesn't mean I'd be that crass -- but it does look an awful lot like a peering eye, which I guess would be more in theme, considering the Navy intends to use the new SA-60 blimps as mobile observation posts. And there's even a good reason for the ball-like shape -- the SA-60 can approach altitudes of up to 22,000 feet, almost four times as high as traditional cigar-shaped airships can fly. While the current version is piloted, future iterations will be unmanned to allow for flights of up to two days straight.

Runco VX-2c Video Xtreme Projector

Runco VX-2c Video Xtreme Projector 06/29/2004 12:16 PM

VX-2c-Projection-System.jpg imageWith a three-chip DLP setup and a 16:9 1,280 by 720 native resolution, the Runco VX-2c can probably be forgiven for its "Video Xtreme" moniker, if just barely. The VX-2c is also the first to use Runco's LiveLink technology, which boosts DVI signals so that they can be run without loss of signal quality in lengths up to 75 feet, which greatly opens up the possibilities of where you can mount the projector. All in all, it looks like a fine projector, and as soon as I can get this cut to stop bleeding, I'll go sell this kidney for the extra $40,000 sale price.

Three New Plasma TVs from JVC

Three New Plasma TVs from JVC 08/19/2004 03:13 PM

jvc_new_plasmas.jpg image

NEC JVC has three new high-definition plasma televisions coming out - two 42-inch models and a 50-inch. One of the 42-inchers, the GD-V422PCE, produces over a billion colors, which should make for a very nice, rich looking picture. They all are nice, of course, as far as plasma goes, plus each is capable of displaying a regular XGA source (1,024 by 760 pixels) if you wanted to use them as a giant monitor. Prices aren't announced yet, but I'd expect something in the $6,000 - 7,000 range for the 42-inch models, and way more than that for the 50.

I'm not really in a bad mood - I'm just blowing off steam. We've got morons up the wazoo crowding the streets of San Francisco to protest the war. It took me well over an hour to get to work this morning - when it normally takes ten minutes. I don't mind peaceful demonstrations - but the moment you get in my way, I get a little pissy. You don't like what we're doing in Iraq? Fine, it's your right as an American citizen to share your feelings with the public. But how is keeping me from my morning coffee going to change anything?! Why don't you get a Web site - like a normal person? Blog it, damn you. Just don't stand in between me and my Peet's....

WHO image rattles plasma TV owner: Not what you want out of an expensive TV.

[Bryant] Ayala of Bondurant [Iowa] said he noticed Monday night that the blue frame used by WHO-TV to warn viewers about winter weather closings appeared to have been burned into his recently purchased plasma screen.

A Web site called PlasmaTVBuyingGuide.com said that images can be burned into plasma TV screens, particularly when the image is displayed for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is more common during the first 200 hours of use, according to the site.

Remember that this is why screensavers moved around originally — because of the mythical "burn in." Supposedly this problem was resolved for CRTs a long time ago, but I guess plasmas are still in their infancy.

Panasonic's New Plasma, LCD VIERA Lineup

Panasonic's New Plasma, LCD VIERA Lineup 04/06/2005 03:21 PM

panasonic_viera.gif imagePanasonic has introduced three new plasma and six new LCD TVs in Japan, all of which are in the VIERA line. Scheduled to be released on May 1st, the plasmas will be available in 50, 42 and 37 inch sizes, and the LCDs in 32, 26, 23 and 19 inch sizes. The most expensive set is 650,000 yen, and the cheapest 160,000 yen — I'll let you guess which models those correspond to. A point of interest for the plasma panels is the new "PEAKS" driver, resulting in a pretty nice 3,000:1 contrast ratio. There wasn't any mention of PEAKS being used on the LCDs. Also, the commercial image character for the new VIERAs will be Koyuki (of "Last Samurai" fame).
