MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Link to torrent. And you can buy some neat little alien robot action figures on the band's website here.

Update: BB reader Tokumei sez:

The action figures on sale at the Daft Punk site are not in fact robots at all! They're actually characters from the anime Interstella 5555: 5ecrets of the 5tellar 5tar 5ystem, which uses the Daft Punk record "Discovery" for the soundtrack. The first four chapters from the movie were also released individually as music videos.

Xeni Jardin: Jessica Smith from FRONTLINE says:
In Israel, a vibrant punk scene has emerged in a society torn apart by the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. In four candid video interviews, FRONTLINE/World reporter and filmmaker Liz Nord talks to the musicians driving the movement. Like other young Israelis, the punk rockers have been affected personally by the conflict. They have fought as soldiers and lost friends and fans killed by suicide bombers. Bands from both ends of the political spectrum use their music to comment on Israeli society. Others make music just to have fun. But all of them agree that punk rock represents freedom.

Reader david says: "Another all-gIrl AC/DC tribute band. A really good one, too!" Link to AC/D-SHE

Boing Boing pal Joey "Accordion Guy" deVilla says, "I'll see your punk cover band genre and raise you an alt-rock mash-up cover band. Smash-Up Derby are a cover band, but their covers are in the form of live-mash-ups. Check out the MP3s posted on their site, such as Smells Like Billie Jean, where Nirvana and Michael Jackson collide -- they're quite good!" Link

Tim Binder says, "This is for your Punk Cover Bands listing, which seems to be rapidly expanding to list unusual cover bands of any sort. The Beach Balls are a Philadelphia cover band that does 80s songs in an operatic/folk style. The link is to a site that has two of their cover songs, Back In Black (more AC/DC) and Girls on Film. When I first saw them live, I was just stunned when I realized that the song I was hearing at the time was The Car's My Best Friend's Girlfriend." Link

Amardeep Singh says,

My favorite punk cover band was Schlong. Their one full-length LP was a drunk-punk version of "West Side Story" called "Punk Side Story," complete with fighting sound effects, snippets of dialogue, and pictures of drunk-looking bay area punk rockers looking at the moon. They match the soundtrack of "West Side Story" track for track. They don't have a webpage, but you can find reference to them here .
And Bruce Heersen says, "Here's yet another AC/DC cover band: Hayseed Dixie (link). On their debut album A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC, they do AC/DC covers bluegrass-style. They have at least one more album that is covers of other rock bands. I've seen these guys live, and they are pretty unbelievable. Really entertaining."

Check out this awesome video for Hayseed Dixie's cover of Mötorhead's punk/metal anthem "Ace of Spades," edited entirely on a PowerMac G4 laptop. Link (screenshot shown at top of this post).

Lemmy's inbred cousins would be proud.

To which BB reader Dario Manzoni sez:

About the bluegrass covers: there is Iron Horse's "Fade to Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribute To Metallica" (Link to samples). I think they did a nice job capturing Metallica's peculiar sound. And absolutely worth mentioning (but different kind) are Apocalyptica, that once released "Plays Metallica by four cellos" (link to full album at low bitrate for sampling purpose)

Afro-Punk offices burned, donations

Afro-Punk offices burned, donations
sought
09/19/2004 02:08 PM
Xeni Jardin: The makers of a groundbreaking documentary film exploring racial identity within the punk scene -- Afro-Punk: the "rock n roll nigger" experience -- were hit with an unexpected disaster last week. Friends are reaching out to coordinate donations of space and gear to help the filmmakers get back on track. From an e-mail sent to friends and supporters:
On Monday Sept. 13th at around 2pm the building that houses the afro-punk offices was set on fire. Apparently, the first floor failing clothing store owner, in an act of desperation, set a phone book on fire and took a little walk. Meanwhile Afro-Punk's director James Spooner was two flights up discussing his upcoming panel on music as a tool for black liberation with a colleague. "We heard the bell ringing and a lot of screaming and yelling" says James. The guilty store owner, alerted James and his friend of the blaze below. Thinking quickly James ran back into the office unplugged his Mac tower, which houses the documentary and hobbled down the stairs through the smoke and flames . "Man, maybe it was stupid, but this film has effected too many people for it to all end here, let the rest burn, I had to save it!"

Luckily fire fighters acted quickly on the scene and were able to stabilize the fire. Flames never reached our office but the NYFD destroyed the place trying to make sure the fire wasn't in the walls or ceiling.

After the smoke literally cleared they were allowed back up to access the damage. All in all it could have been worse. The Afro-Punk computers and camera are still working, the 200 hours of footage afro-punk was cut from seems to be okay and the work for our next film is safe. We did lose some furniture, a monitor and some vcrs from our dubbing station, but most tragic, we lost our donated office space.

Link to the Afro-Punk website, link to paypal donation site, and e-mail the group for a list of non-cash donations they're seeking -- including office space, office supplies, and electronic equipment (VCRs, monitors, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and the like). (via pho list and Bob Davis of Soul Patrol)

Cameraphone
09/21/2004 03:02 PM

The gritty streets of Sweden are littered with the burnt and twisted carcasses of their many gang members, toppled bun carts, and half-expended tubs of peroxide paste - and now the violence is spreading to the hospitals, or so they would have us believe. Word is that youth who think they need prioritized health care are sending cameraphone picture threats to medical staff. As if nearly-free health care wasn't enough, now they've got to go and get all pissy because they aren't first in line. They ought to come over here and get stabbed - then we can see how much they like waiting in line, filling out the forms to claim you're a one-legged Hasid lesbian.

Also, this particular internet person pictured may not actually be a real Swede gang member, but that's not what Google thinks.

Damn. Did it again. 11/06/2003 10:00 AM
Felt tired at 10pm last night. Laid down for a bit. Woke up at 5:30am today. So much for the stuff I planned to do last night. On the plus side, I'll be to work way early, so I can come home earlier than normal. Yeay!...

Damn.

Damn. 12/02/2003 01:51 AM

Want to see how much more information is stored in a photo taken with a 6+ megapixel digital SLR? I took a few test shots with my new Digital Rebel at the highest jpeg quality setting, which is about 3000x2000 images (not a RAW or TIFF image). Here's a shot of my cat sitting in the sun, downsized to 750x500. And here's a 750x500 chunk of the original photo. Notice there's nary a hint of pixelation anywhere. After years of using 1 megapixel cameras and more recently a 3 megapixel camera, the stuff coming out of the SLR is unbelieveable.

I haven't printed anything with this camera yet but I bet prints from inkjets or ofoto are going to look superb given all the detail in these images.

Getting rid of those damn bars

Getting rid of those damn bars 03/28/2005 01:38 PM
For months and months I've been ignoring the ugly horizontal bars that show up in the box at the top of my archive pages. One crosses out "An Entry from the Archives" and the other runs underneath that text. They don't show up in Microsoft IE but they do in Firefox and Safari. Generous reader Miles of TinyApps, a site I never tire of recommending to y'all, scouted out the html code and found the offending lines. Apparently the Style property "text-decoration: none;" renders as blue underlines in Firefox and Safari, although I'm sure it will turn out to have...

Ah, what a perfect morning. Crispy matzoh for breakfast, a cup of delicious coffee, and then a couple of hours trying to clean my PC of adware and spyware, some of it fiendishly clever and as tough to pry out as a hermit crab that's grown into its shell. Adaware works pretty well - extremely well since it's free - but there are some objects that it can't delete because they are in use. And neither can I, even doing a safe mode start-up. Die 3avxfmcodec.cpy.dll, die! Some of the little wankers get loaded via my Hosts file, and then...

No, It's Not Our Own Damn Fault

No, It's Not Our Own Damn Fault 09/07/2004 01:04 AM

In response to my rant about integrated library system vendors, Peter Rukavina says that it's our own damn fault.

"When you outsource the administration of your data to someone else (whether it's an OPAC vendor or a university computing department or some guy down the street), you're also outsourcing any chance you have at retaining ultimate control over that data.

When you buy a 'one size fits all' technology solution -- an OPAC that's designed for, say, 'any public library' -- you're buying a commodity, not a solution.

And you should expect to be treated as an insignificant cog by your vendor: that's what you are. By absolving yourself of personal responsibility over your data management in the first place, you've already said 'we don't care enough about this to do it ourselves, so you take care of it for us.' Is it any wonder they treat you like they do?"

While I understand the spirit of his response and I wish that we did have some of our best and brightest programmers devoted to creating the one true catalog (rather than working on it as time permits at their real job or doing it at home on their own time), nonprofit libraries just don't have the option for which Peter advocates.

I bought a new car this year because I was unhappy with some of the things about my old car. Using Peter's logic, I shouldn't have outsourced my new vehicle to a car manufacturer, but I did. I just didn't have the time, money, or other resources to build one myself.

Yeah, it's over the top, but you get my point. Ambulance drivers don't make the ambulances, doctors don't make the defibrillators, lawyers don't make the Lexis-Nexis database, and programmers use operating systems developed by someone else (even if it's Linux).

You can't outsource everything, and libraries have to prioritize what to expend their limited amounts of resources on. Can they build their own cars? No, but they can certainly switch to one made by another manufacturer.
