Heated discussions on PHP-DEV

Heated discussions on PHP-DEV 06/06/2002 04:36 PM
Every once in a while, a heated discussion is spawned on the PHP developers' mailing list. One of such discussions is in progress right now, and you should check it out. It is a "clash" between two fractions, one wanting to make PHP more advanced and the other wanting to keep it simple.

Atheros IPO Super Heated

Atheros IPO Super Heated 12/10/2003 01:11 AM
Om Malik reports on Atheros's upcoming IPO: It's not hot, it's superheated, with a sixfold oversubscription to the number of shares potentially available at the initial public offering. Before the recent surge in IPOs, Atheros would have been a takeover target; now it's valuing itself in the open market, which could dramatically raise its asking price for a company trying to get a wedge into manufacturing 802.11a and a/g chipsets. This should also, by the way, be an interested test of the post-dotcom IPO market in which shares were distributed to favored parties who would turn them quickly, and those who bought in on day one were disappointed on day two through infinity. With new rules and watchdogs watching, I'll be curious to see if Atheros's price rises. A good IPO should see the stock priced correctly: its opening price shouldn't be too much higher than the IPO price, or the company left money on the table....

It’s a long flight from Munich to San Francisco, even non-stop. But recently two enterprising Apple product managers cut the distance dramatically with a few at-hand tools: iChat AV, iSight, 17-inch PowerBook G4, a Boeing 777 and an orbiting satellite. [Jun 23]

MTV gets cold feet, or does it?

MTV gets cold feet, or does it? 05/27/2004 06:12 AM
This turns into one of those cases where researching a story gets weirder. The documentary Supe r Size Me centers on a documentary filmmaker's 30 day experience eating nothing but McDonalds. The film is doing amazingly well as a limited release documentary grossing more per screen than high-budget Troy. Here is the weird part, Reuters has picked up on a distributor press release claiming that MTV is refusing to air advertising for Super Size Me because the film is "disparaging to fast-food restaurants". The Reuters short seems to have quite a bit of legs. However a Hollywood Reporter article details MTVs side of the story placing the blame on the film's distributor. Is this really a case of a network getting cold feet? Or is it a case of distributor trying to pull the "too edgy for MTV" moneymaking ploy? And what is with the continually morphing Reuters clip that is just now being tossed onto doorsteps and stuffed into newsboxes across North America? (The film was previously discussed on metafilter back in January.

[This is part of a series of posts on the home buying process I'm going thru. To see the full set, visit the house category archives.] After the place I saw the other day, I got to wondering how big my apartment really is. Bare feet?

Bare feet? 06/21/2004 06:13 AM
Mindy wonders if anybody would notice if she took her shoes off at work (in Finnish). In the spirit of scientific exploration, I took my shoes and socks off to check what would happen.

So far it's been 15 minutes, and at least one person went by without saying anything (though she did wonder why I did not want to go to lunch yet.) I will keep you updated.

(Oh yeah, and my coworkers reading this weblog: it does not count if you read it from here first. So nyah.)

30 minutes: I'm feeling a slight chill. I'm trying to wiggle my toes to keep them warm.

60 minutes: Close to an hour. My feet are definitely getting cold. I wonder if there's "email yoga"? (By the way - I have about four Gmail invitations left, so if you want to test drive it, drop me some email.)

100 minutes: I'll now attempt to go to the toilet. Wish me luck.'

102 minutes: back. Nothing.

Antigravity has feet of clay

Antigravity has feet of clay 02/05/2005 09:26 PM
Thanks to Gnomie Paul Wright for this item. Space agency report is a downer for gravity-control researchers. “Could astronauts take a leaf out of H. G. Wells’s book The First Men in the Moon, and use spacecraft propelled by antigravity devices? Some see the idea as science fiction, but major space agencies take it seriously. In 2001, the European Space Agency (ESA) commissioned two scientists to evaluate schemes for gravity control. They have concluded that,…

Well, okay, I'm not really dressed up... it's my everyday outfit, but I'm still running with it. It's a shifted holiday at my house!
