Home network complexity challenges

installation complexity – quantified by
“help desk” calls – reduces both
satisfaction with and brand loyalty to
home networking products and services
09/04/2004 02:40 AM
Customer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives: Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. NAS for the home

NAS for the home 05/25/2004 02:54 PM

Logitec is working on a
series of Network Addressable Storage (NAS) devices geared toward the home user. These are more commonly seen in small to medium sized business networks.

Ranging from 160GB to 300GB, they come with the expected LAN connection, plus three USB2.0 ports; additionally, plug a digicam or flash drive into the port on the front and press the “copy” button and your files are zapped onto disk. All models support up to 128 users and 100 shared folders, and at 60 x 213 x 181 mm and 1.4 kg in weight, they’re admirably compact.

It amazes me how much technology is migrating from the Fortune 1000 server room to the living room.

returning home

returning home 02/01/2005 10:04 PM
In 20 minutes, I'm getting in a car to go to the airport to fly to Sao Paolo, to fly to Chicago, to fly to San Francisco, to get in a car to go home. It has been an insanely intense few days in this astonishing place. This morning's panel was packed in what seemed to be an old factory. The room was overflowing with at least 1,500 people, and a panel of 5. Manuel Castells began, with a careful and extremely interesting diagnosis of the net's development. I then described the remix culture culture has been (legal and free) and the remix culture culture could be (amazing and diverse) and the blocks to that new culture coming about (law). Christian Alhert told the story of the BBC's Creative Archive. And JP Barlow gave one of the most intense and powerful speeches I've ever seen him deliver. This place is personal to him. Then Gil spoke. Needless to say, the warm up acts were just that. He electrified the audience, delivering a written speech as poetry slam. He promised more support for free software, and free culture. And he again embraced the Creative Commons movement in Brazil, which is exploding everywhere here. Again he took questions. Again he answered critics, directly, and passionately. I was reminded of his comment to me in the car the other night: we're just citizens here. After lunch, I visited the Youth Camp at the WSF, where 50,000 tents, and 80,000 kids are participating in WSF events. At the core was a Free Software lab, with about 50 machines, all running GNU/Linux, and constant lessons about how to set the systems up, how do to audio, and video editing, how to participate in free software communities. This was organized totally by the kids who ran it. Machines in shacks, hay on the ground, wires and boxes everywhere. I got to talk to the organizers of at least one part of the lab for about an hour. JP Barlow and I peppered them with questions as they described their "Thousand points of culture" project -- to build a thousand places around Brazil where free software tools exist for people to make, and remix, culture. The focus is video and audio; no one's much worried about Office applications, or the like. It is an extraordinary, grass roots movement devoted first to an ideal (free software) and second to a practice (making it real). They have the culture to do it. Again, there were geeks, but not only. There were men, but plenty of women (and lots of kids). They were instructing each other -- some about code, some about culture, some about organizing, some about dealing with the government -- as they built this infrastructure out. Think Woodstock, without the mud, and where the audience makes the music. I'm going to write more about this, elsewhere. But I've not admired more in as long as I can remember.

We're going to Amsterdam for almost 3 weeks - Aug. 22-Sept. 8 this summer!  It's a house trade - so folks there can come here, use our pool and enjoy the hiking trails and view

I will also be at the Galway, IR FOAF confab Sept. 1-2.  It's time for some serious Blogger partying.

Oh yah - per il mio Italiani Bloggerisimos - we're gonna jet down to Gradisca (near Trieste) to see Paolo and Monica's new house.  We'll definitely congregate down there - too.  Give me a chance to meet Danny Ayers.  Maybe Loic can find his way to one of these parties?

Anyway - we'll be staying at #1 - right off the Rozengracht - near my favorite coffee house "Grey Area".

During the last two days there were almost 30 shorter sessions about various topics.

I arrived in Amsterdam this morning around 8:00 A.M. local time and got to the hotel around 10:00. I had a few hours to kill before my room was ready so I wandered around to see what I could see. This being Amsterdam, there was quite a lot to see, but my absolute favorite was one pair of great tits. I even got a picture of one of them. We don't have tits like these in Brooklyn!

Amsterdam to Get City Wide Wi-Fi

Amsterdam to Get City Wide Wi-Fi 08/31/2004 11:25 AM
A company in Amsterdam is planning to deploy 125 base stations to cover all of Amsterdam with Wi-Fi: It's not clear which vendor is supplying the network but the operator is clearly not using off-the-shelf access points. The company is mainly targeting expats, students, and people who share accommodation. Those types of residents may be reluctant to have DSL or cable installed in their location if they don't intend to stay long term. Subscribers will pay just under 15 Euros per month for a 256 Kbps connection. The operator may be smart to target a transient population and offer a low price because it will likely struggle at least initially to ensure that coverage and capacity are adequate....

We're going to have a second micro-content dinner in Amsterdam this Tueday, Sept. 7th - at the Dim Sum Palace - right off the Leidseplein - Leidsestratt 95 - at 7:30 PM.

Lots of folks who couldn't make it last time will be there and some new folks I've met while here.

With all the happenings going - with all these new standards and efforts starting up - I was hoping that this roadshow would get some Europeans involved as well.

Alf Eaton is ready to belly up to the bar, now let's see if anybody else is.

So we'll feast on Dim Sum, learn about OpenMedia, FOAF and staying pipeline agnostic - and meet each other! And you get to meet Mimi, Lucy and Lisa - too.

AMSTERDAM

AMSTERDAM 09/05/2004 03:06 PM
kissI've been writing some quick stories, strictly to practice crafting realistic dialogue. Dialogue is a critical aspect of my upcoming novel -- it has to be believable or the novel will suffer. Most of these exercises are just fragments, but occasionally I get carried away enough to make a complete story. The most recent of these is called Amsterdam, and I thought it was kind of fun. Not serious, not on the same level as my more carefully-written fiction. Caution: This is a bit naughty, and meant for adults only. Don't try this at home. Enjoy with someone you love.
