Yahoo Pushing Ahead With Email
Authentication Plan

Yahoo Pushing Ahead With Email
Authentication Plan
12/08/2003 04:41 AM
For the past few years, various parties (users, companies, governments) have been saying that we need to do something about spam. However, every time they get together, the argument gets bogged down over things like "well, how do we define spam?" or the government comes up with some sort of quick and dirty law that does nothing to help the situation. Well, now, it appears that Yahoo has had enough of the various consortiums and groups trying to deal with the spam problem and realized, "hey, we're a pretty big email player - maybe we can just force through a plan." They're working on an authentication scheme that would let senders prove they are who they say they are - which would make those who aren't authenticated more suspect. They're also pushing the solution out to others to try to make it a sort of de facto standard. On the whole, this doesn't seem like a bad idea. If you could block out all the forged email, it would get rid of an awful lot of spam. Then, any of the spam that does get through could be tracked down more easily as well.

Apple moves ahead of Toshiba in U.S. PC
market
04/15/2005 04:25 PM
Apple Computer has moved ahead of Toshiba to take the 5th position in U.S. PC sales during the first quarter, according to preliminary statistics released by Gartner Inc. today. Gartner said despite disappointing results for most vendors in the U.S. market in the first quarter, Apple's PC shipments in the U.S. increased 45.1 percent in the first quarter. The growth of the iMac and PowerBook categories were key drivers for the company during what has always been a traditionally weak consumer quarter. Worldwide PC shipments increased 10.3 percent in the first quarter of 2005, according to Gartner. Worldwide PC shipments totaled 50.4 million units in the first quarter of 2005, up from 45.7 million in the same period last year. Dell's worldwide growth rate fell below 20 percent for the first time in ten quarters, pulled down by a weaker performance in the U.S. market. Despite this, Dell's growth rate of 13.7 percent remained higher than the worldwide average, and it extended its lead in the worldwide rankings. Gartner said final statistics will be available soon to clients of Gartner's PC Quarterly Statistics Worldwide by Region program.

Zaep AntiSpam

Zaep AntiSpam 03/06/2004 01:53 AM

I recently found out that my friends at RhinoSoft have been working on an anti-spam solution called Zaep, and I've really been looking forward to its release. I know there are other anti-spam tools out there, but I've been nervous about trusting my email to any of them since email is such as large part of my business.

However, I've relied on RhinoSoft's other products (such as FTP Voyager) for several years and they've never let me down, so trying Zaep was a no-brainer. Well, I'm happy (but not surprised) to report that Zaep is working well for me. It's nice to be able to look at my inbox again and see only messages that I want to see (anyone else remember when email was like that?).

BTW, it seems to me that as a shareware author I probably try more software than most visitors to this blog, so perhaps I should start linking to more third-party products here.

I finally took a few minutes to put in place the last anti-blog spam recommendation folks had--I renamed mt-comment.cgi to something else. Turned out to be as trivial as I thought. Just had to add the line: CommentScript mt-despamcomments.cgi to my mt.cfg file, rename mt-comments to mt-despamcomments.cgi, and rebuild all the files. No biggie. 'Course, this means that upgrades are going to be a pain in the neck, as I'll have to remember to do the renaming on each upgrade. No more drop-in upgrades, alas. It's probably time (or past time) for an install script for Movable Type that does...
