What's Next In Search Technology?

What's Next In Search Technology? 05/06/2004 01:32 AM
We're nowhere near where search technology can be, and with everyone so focused on the search space these days (even if that's not really Google's core business), Business Week is looking into what's next for search. They predict four main areas of investigation with the most obvious being personalized search. Many companies, including Google, are already working on this. Next up, they see better searching over time intervals, including more deep storage of historical web documents in order to better determine online trends. The third area, which Google has also spoken extensively about, is searching beyond the web, whether that's databases, your desktop or even non-computer related things (such as the names of people you met at a party last night). Of course, the most important improvement of all is the one they save for last: making search better. As good as online searching is right now, it still has some very serious limitations, many of which are being shown by the proliferation of search spam. No matter what, it looks like we'll have plenty of new developments to look forward in search.

In this trip down the Memory Lane of information retrieval -- or search -- technology, author Ramana Rao begins at the beginning, with an excerpt from a 1945 Vanity Fair article titled "As We May Think" that foretold the image of a scholar aided by a machine: "a device in which an individual stores all his books, records and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility." Today, when some 25 million Web searches an hour are conducted, that vision is quickly becoming reality. Rao finds that, across the decades, two dichotomies stand out clearly in the evolution of search. "The first is the contrast between focusing on the one hand on narrowly defined technological approaches and on the other hand on a broader understanding of the full problem set and the possible solutions. The second is the contrast between working out ideas in research versus spreading them commercially." Essentially, the longstanding challenge has been matching technological capabilities to real information needs. Rao concludes that the "semantic Web," may eventually come to pass, but only with the birth of systems that support human-computer symbiosis.

Search Engine Technology and Digital Libraries - Libraries Need to Discover the Academic Internet by Norbert Lossau, Bielefeld University Library, Germany
D-Lib Magazine June 2004 Volume 10 Number 6
http://www .dlib.org/dlib/june04/lossau/06lossau.html

This article is the revised and elaborated version of a presentation that was delivered at the invitation of the American Digital Library Federation (DLF) at their Spring Forum meeting in New Orleans (http://snipurl.com/7kqx). It will be followed by "Search engine technology and digital libraries: Moving from theory to praxis" as a collaborative article from this author and Friedrich Summann, Head of IT at Bielefeld University Library. With the development of the World Wide Web, the "information search" has grown to be a significant business sector of a global, competitive and commercial market. Powerful players have entered this market, such as commercial internet search engines, information portals, multinational publishers and online content integrators. Will Google, Yahoo or Microsoft be the only portals to global knowledge in 2010? If libraries do not want to become marginalized in a key area of their traditional services, they need to acknowledge the challenges that come with the globalisation of scholarly information, the existence and further growth of the academic internet. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog This will be added to Academic Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.
