Amazing dining at Eleven Madison Park

Amazing dining at Eleven Madison Park 05/21/2004 05:16 PM
I've had my share of tasting menus but last night's six-course tasting menu at Eleven Madison Park was one of the best. With wonderful big windows looking onto the lush Madison Square Park, and an interior filled with flowers of all kinds, Eleven Madison Park's atmosphere got the evening off to a great start. The champagne that followed continued the thrill. Usually the tasting menu is a series of small plates, demonstrating the breadth and depth of the kitchen. At Eleven Madison Park, the breadth is more visible because they don't serve everyone the same dish. So each course was actually one thing for Jason and something different for me. Like a creamy pea flan with morels for one and asparagus with goat cheese for the other. Or skate in brown butter and cod. Arctic char and salmon. Each course we ate half of what was on the plate, then switched. So the six-course menu (which actually eight courses counting the tuna tartare amuse bouche and the chocolate soufflé) ended up providing eleven different things to eat. And wowzers, but where they good! The pea flan was creamy and sweet and the most beautiful shade of green. The four fish courses were each distinct, each wonderful. And the only course that was the same for both of us was a côte du boeuf -- beef -- that was perhaps the best piece of meat I've ever eaten in my life. It was such a great experience to have so many textures, so many flavors -- and with the wine flight we had to accompany it, so many different wine tastes -- that I wonder why I'd ever want just a larger plate of one thing. I am fully subscribed to the Thomas Keller school of thought when it comes to portion size: three or four bites is a wonderful amount, enough that you experience it and yet not so much your tongue tires of the flavors. Each last bite leaves you wanting more. And yet the next course comes and it's another exiting adventure and new flavors. I can still nearly taste the pea flan on my tongue! I definitely recommend Eleven Madison Park and hope to have the pleasure of dining again there someday.

Madison, Intel's third-generation Itanium chip, is on the horizon, and the server market is abuzz. Will this be the processor that gives Intel a solid toehold in the high-end server market, or will it be another embarrassment like the company's first-generation Itanium, Merced? And should IT managers delay server purchases until Madison is released?

James Madison Papers
http:// memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/madison_papers/

The Library of Congress announced the release of the James Madison Papers, now available on the Library's American Memory Web at the above link. The James Madison Papers from the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress consist of approximately 12,000 items captured in some 72,000 digital images. They document the life of the man who came to be known as the "Father of the Constitution" through correspondence, personal notes, drafts of letters and legislation, an autobiography, legal and financial documents, and miscellaneous manuscripts. The collection is organized into six series dating from 1723 to 1836. Beginning with a selection of his father's letters, the series moves through Madison's years as a student, and as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and include extensive notes of the debates during his three-year term in the Continental Congress (1779-82). Notes and a memoranda document Madison's pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the Virginia ratification convention of 1788. Other materials reflect the nine years that Madison spent in the House of Representatives and his tenure as Secretary of State during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Correspondence and notes trace his two terms as the fourth president of the United States, illuminating the origins and course of the War of 1812 and the post-war years of his presidency and subsequent retirement. The collection also includes a complete copy of Thomas Jefferson's notes from the Continental Congress of 1776. Notable correspondents include Dolley Payne Madison, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Edmund Randolph, Noah Webster, and Secretary of War James Armstrong, whose correspondence with Madison fills an entire series. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

The Kizuna gathering 04/09/2004 03:56 PM

I am hosting a gathering here in Tokyo starting tomorrow. It's a somewhat academic meeting to talk about social science issues and technological issues around mobility and microcontent. Participants include a small group of academics, technologists and business people. I'll let you know if we come up with anything interesting. Some of the other participants will probably be blogging as well.

This is the first time that I've ever worked together with my sister to organize something so that's been fun. It's also been great working with the team at the Insight & Foresight unit at Nokia who are supporting the event. BTW, "Kizuna" is a Japanese word that means a kind of mental linkage between people. "Friendship" and "family tie" are probably close counterparts in English.

The U.K.'s National Archives has pledged to put 1,000 years of history on the Web by 2007, creating a single "gateway" that will enable other archives, museums, libraries and universities to find information online 24 hours a day. The National Archives was created last year by merging the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission. "In its first year, National Archives has created the first ever online archives of government Web sites and made over 3.5m documents available online," says National Archives chief executive Sarah Tyacke. In pursuing its ambitious goal the National Archives plans to improve the way records are managed and selected and will launch a campaign to raise public awareness and understanding of archives. Eventually, the organization will provide digital archive services to anyone who's a history buff, says Tyacke.

CongratulationsNow to Ohio

CongratulationsNow to Ohio 09/09/2004 11:56 PM

Dang, those Ohio people are kicking butt again. Exhibit A: KnowItNow.

"KnowItNow is a live online information service provided free of charge for the citizens of Ohio by the State Library of Ohio and your local public library. Professional librarians are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer your reference questions and assist you in finding information....

Librarians around the state staff the KnowItNow service. During regular library hours staff working in Ohio’s public libraries (click here to learn if your local library participates) monitor the service and respond to your questions. After hours, the KnowItNow After Dark team of professional librarians provides high quality information service even in the 'wee hours' of the morning. Online tutors are also available and ready to assist students with homework from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

KnowItNow is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. General Reference assistance is available during all hours. Specialists in the subjects of business, foreign languages, genealogy, government information, health, history, law, literature, music and art, science, technology and the social sciences are available from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday - Saturday. Questions in these specialties may be asked anytime but may be referred to specialists for next day response.

Tutoring service from online professional tutors is available from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Some questions may be referred to the online tutors during this time."

I learned about this service earlier today when I talked with Brad Stephens from the NOLA Regional Library System in Ohio. We partner with Brad and NOLA for ListenIllinois (by the way, the third enrollment period is open now!), and I'm always intrigued to hear what he's up to. He and his staff have been central to getting this service up and running, and what a service it is.

Brad was justifiably proud to tell me KnowItNow has contracted with 62 librarians who basically telecommute to cover all of those 24/7 hours. They're the first such service to keep all of the hours in-house (so-to-speak) and not outsource them. They estimate they're going to handle 10,000-12,000 questions per month, which will make a great success story. It's heartening to see such cohesive, well-done statewide efforts such as this one, although it's a sad reminder of how splintered online reference has become in Illinois.

I also like how KnowItNow is the third piece of a trifecta that includes HomeworkNow (homework help) and ReadThisNow (reader's advisory). All of the sites are nicely done, too - attractive and useful. Big-time congratulations to everyone involved!
