Remember 'TrustBridge'?
05/26/2004 06:21 PMIt's been two years since the Redmondians first spoke publicly of
"TrustBridge," the company's collection of
federated-identity-management technologies. Since then, there's been
no word on the whereabouts of the TrustBridge deliverables. Until this
week at TechEd, that is.
Google X resurfaces
Google X resurfaces
03/19/2005 03:27 AMShortly after its public debut, a Google Labs project that emulates
some of the graphical elements of the Mac OS X dock seemed to have
disappeared, only to resurface again.
Google X is an experimental interface for accessing Google's various
search services, which range from Web and image search to its local
and groups services.
Google software engineer Chikai Ohazama wrote in a weblog that he had
created Google X because he "wanted a quick, fun way to access all of
Google's services." He said that he had shared the project with Google
co-workers and others, and then it came to the attention of Marissa
Mayer, Google's director of consumer Web products. She urged him to
prepare it for posting on Google Labs, the company's site for
prototypes.
"So, after some spit and polish from some enthusiastic Googlers and
the keen eye of the UI team, Google X is here," Ohazama wrote.

Lookup update: TLC
"There's been another big surge of interest in LibraryLookup<
/A> over the past few days. It started at
43 Folders, and spread to various places including Subterranean Homepage News, Lost Remote,
Rebec
ca Blood, and The
Guardian.
Thanks to Jill Darbyshire, I've been able to add support in the bookmarklet generator for yet another class of OPAC systems. The
vendor is TLC, and I
believe it should now be possible to generate bookmarklets for many of
the TLC systems listed
here." [Jon's
Radio]
I'll also note that I saw this recent round appear on Lost Remote,
The Providence Journal, and
Boing Boing, three pretty big sites that aren't library-related.
Ask yourself how important is it for library services to have an open,
web services back-end that lets your staff, third-parties, and users
access the data from outside your catalog's native interface?
Does your vendor work with LibraryLookup<
/A>? If not, you've got a problem.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AMA security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow
malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way
Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a
document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could
overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed.
If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same
actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding,
changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or
formatting the hard drive.

MVPs keep bashing competition of
Microsoft (Linux, Symbian) and cajoling
users to get Microsoft products
01/28/2004 01:31 PMApparently Microsoft MVPs not only are helping users of Microsoft
products, but are also officially bashing Microsoft´s competition:
Robert Levy says that Windows Mobile from Microsoft is better than
Linux, because operators will earn less money with Linux (and thus
forgets one important factor: users don´t like to part with their
money very much): Linux is proclaiming "Pick me! I´ll decrease your
costs!" while Microsoft is getting right to the heart of the matter by
boasting "Pick me! I´ll increase your revenue." One offers to cut the
cost of each device by a few dollars. The other offers to increase the
amount of money customers pay to their carrier each month by a few
dollars. This doesn´t sound like a very difficult decision to me.
