Remember 'TrustBridge'?

Remember 'TrustBridge'? 05/26/2004 06:21 PM

It's been two years since the Redmondians first spoke publicly of "TrustBridge," the company's collection of federated-identity-management technologies. Since then, there's been no word on the whereabouts of the TrustBridge deliverables. Until this week at TechEd, that is.

Remember typewriters?

Remember typewriters? 04/16/2004 07:34 AM

A picture named typeWriter.jpgWhat happened to people who use typewriters?

In the 80s, during the rise of personal computers, they were very outspoken.

You'd see pictures in news papers of people using their typewriters to write their articles and columns. "There's nothing like a typewriter," they'd say. "You can have your personal computer, but I'll keep my typewriter. Writing is better with a typewriter. I think more before I write. There's something wrong about being able to revise constantly. I know I'm done. I have a life."

I'm paraphrasing of course, trying my best to tell it like they did.

Now you don't hear this any more. What happened? Did they die? Did they convert? Or did they tire of the arguing?

Someday I hope to meet someone who's never seen a typewriter.

Someday I hope to meet someone who doesn't know what a typewriter is.

Someday I hope to meet someone who is impressed that I've actually used one myself.

Phil Goldman has died. The not-yet-40 former Apple software engineer, co-founder of WebTV, and CEO of Mailblocks, died unexpectedly the day after Christmas. I had only met Goldman by email. After a critical comment about Mailblocks on this blog, he wrote and we began a conversation, now cut short. When I told a friend about Goldman's direct and honest responses to my criticism of his company, the friend said, "That's Phil." Or so it was, and so should we all be. Goldman served on the board of Brave Kids, and his family has asked that contributions be made to it.

Javier Marías describes Spain after the Madrid bombings in New York Times. Here in Spain, we don't feel as if we are at war, because we aren't. And neither are the inhabitants of the United States, however vociferously many Americans may insist that they are. War is something else entirely. No semi-normal life can be led while a war is going on. The Madrilenians who lived through the siege of their city from 1936 to 1939 know that very well....

Rekall is the app I've spent the most time learning while running RC2 of SUSE 9.1 on my desktop the past few weeks. You may remember that Rekall began its life as a proprietary product sold by TheKompany. Today, Rekall is a dual-licensed GUI database front-end with aspirations of becoming Linux's answer to Microsoft Access. The 2.2.0-beta1 release of the GPLd version bundled with SUSE 9.1 is not Access yet, but it's very usable.

Remember the iWalk

Remember the iWalk 06/06/2005 12:15 AM

Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors, CNET News.com has learned.

Changing the chips would require programmers to rewrite their software to take full advantage of the new processor.

Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips | Tech News on ZDNet,

I will post pictures of me naked on top of my car in broad daylight if Apple moves to x86 chips. Seriously.

I really don't get it. I mean, in light of articles about how we don't trust journalists anymore someone on the order of Cnet, which most already call a techno-rag, goes and calls it fact and truth that Apple will commodify the Mac by moving to Intel chips.

Unless, and here the brain starts actually working, the move to Intel isn't what everyone is thinking. Perhaps such a move is more to Intel's processing and production plants, but they would still make the PowerPC chips? Perhaps these talks are adding Intel to the PowerPC patent group (CHRP and co.) so that Apple can get a "real" chip maker in town to get the G5 to 3GHz and beyond.

Intel making PowerPC chips? Could it really be? I'm unsure of how I feel having the same company making the CPU for both major hardware platforms, but I know that both Motorola and IBM have production problems at the higher speeds that Intel just doesn't have.

Eh, either way, I'm more than skeptical. I still remember the iWalk, and I'm still laughing at it.

Remember BottomFeeder ?  It Just Got Better

I mentioned BottomFeeder yesterday?  sunday?  saturday?  The time frame gets a bit "fuzzy" lately and while I could Feedster for it .... Anyway I wanted to point out that James, the author, has improved it dramatically by making it contextual i.e.

So I'm reading Ted Neward's post on AOP. I highlight SOP, and hit the Feedster it! menu item. Bam, I get a list of other blog entries on AOP. Very cool. If I was writing an entry of my own on AOP, I'd have all the necessary material immediately at hand, in one tool. See James' Blog

Or from the email he just sent me:

I just extended that support by making it contextual.  In BottomFeeder, a user can select some text, and then do a feedster search or a google search on the selection - the selection being some text from an RSS feed.

I'm finding Feedster to be invaluable from a blogging standpoint - great work!

*Big Smile*.  Thanks James.  Nice work.  And I know that at least a few of you are looking for a gui aggregator on Linux / *nix  platforms.  Definitely give this one a shot.  I mean where else are you going to get a News Aggregator for AIX ?  (Most other Unices supported; your mileage may vary)

Another spam post that goes into the usual areas discussing the problem, but has one statement that really clicked with me: email used to be fun. You used to enjoy sitting down at your email and seeing who had written you an email. Now you fear the latest offers for viagra or porn. Even in cases where you have a pretty good filter set up, you wonder how long it will last. A good friend of mine just left for a week and a half vacation, where he won't have access to the internet. He knows that his yahoo email box is going to fill up with spam within a day of his being gone, but there's nothing he can do about it. Spammers have taken all the fun out of email and turned it into a chore. How nice.

How Do You Remember Sites?

How Do You Remember Sites? 01/22/2004 08:56 AM
Browser bookmarks or favorites have always seemed very cumbersome to me. I used them very early on when I first got on the web, but after collecting a tremendous list I never used, I stopped completely. Now, the only "bookmarks" that I use are for bookmarklets that allow me to do something. They're not for remembering where a page is, but to make it easier to use a service. However, bookmarks have remained in just about every browser, and finally some people are wondering if there's a better way. These days, I tend to just use search engines, and hope that my memory is strong enough to keep track of the important things. If I know I've visited a page recently, I'll use the history functionality. That's worked out quite well for me. In some, very rare, cases I'll post a link to a personal blog or wiki that I use for just such things. It seems like I'm not the only person to think this way. Plenty of people have ditched bookmarks altogether. Lots just use search engines, and others do things like sending themselves emails (something I've done at times as well). Some new technologies people are working on include a better ability to search through history files as well as "enhanced" bookmarks, that let you easily add notes about the site (though, it appears not too many people are interested in this). Not mentioned in the article, though, are sites like del.icio.us that are ways for people to store (and share) links they want to remember. The article also seems to ignore the fact that many people use personal blogs as a way to store links.

Do these guys remember Lyle? 07/27/2004 06:06 AM
So Jason Giambi (likely) has amoebas in his intestines. Funny, this is the kind of potentially fatal illness someone gets when their immune system is weakened by anabolic steroids. A good doctor of a professional athelete is going to tell his patient "if you want to, you know, live through this, stop taking steroids." Maybe that's why Giambi is only hitting .220 and looks like a pale facsimile of his fo rmer self. So given the BALCO investigation and baseball's utter unwillingness to address this issue seriously, how much longer do these guys get away with asking "Who you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?" before a prominent player goes the way of Lyle Alzado? Is it none of our business? Are steroids just part of modern sports?

Remember the Armenian Genocide

Remember the Armenian Genocide 04/14/2005 01:59 PM
"Between 1915 and 1918 the Ottoman Empire, ruled by Muslim Turks, carried out a policy to eliminate its Christian Armenian minority. This genocide was preceded by a series of massacres in 1894-1896 and in 1909, and was followed by another series of massacres beginning in 1920. By 1922 Armenians had been eradicated from their historic homeland." Since the early 1920s, successive Turkish governments have maintained an ostentatious silence on the subject, broken only to issue denials that the genocide ever occurred, and denunciations of those who assert that it did. In 1990, for example, the Turkish ambassador to the U.S. dismissed the holocaust as resulting from "a tragic civil war initiated by Armenian nationalists."

This Sunday in NYC, thousands will gather to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the genocide and protest the Turkish denials.

Forget it
08/13/2004 01:41 AM
Remember last winter's rush of gay marriages at San Francisco's city hall, following on from the mayoral decree that gays may marry? Remember the rock-concert campouts, the nationwide outpouring of support, the endless parade of joyous images of happily married couples?

Forget it.

The California Supreme Court has annulled every one of those marriages. From ephermal.org:

"Molly McKay is the Executive Director of Marriage Equality California. This is a photo I took of her at the release party for We Do. She's on page 23, wearing that same dress, getting married. "For years - years - she and her partner, Dr. Davina Kotulski, came to City Hall on Valentine's Day to apply for a marriage license. It was their own quiet protest. And every year they were turned away. Until this year.

"This year, six short months ago, she was finally allowed to marry Davina. And today, thanks to the fantastically stupid ruling of the California Supreme Court, that marriage is null and void." Link
