Classical UWB Backers Offer Free Patent

10/29/2003 11:25 AM
Motorola and XtremeSpectrum say no fees if their UWB proposal wins; TI is trying to follow: The two camps in the IEEE 802.15.3a standard process have raised the ante by lowering the ante for approval of their flavor. Motorola and XtremeSpectrum will make their technology in this standard patent-royalty free. Texas Instruments would like to do so as well as part of the OFDM alliance they've formed, but haven't gotten the signoff from all of its partners. This probably benefits consumers of the technology in that removing royalty costs will lower the bar to entry for manufacturers and reduce overall cost. The head of XtremeSpectrum is wrong when he said that it's clear that for a standard to be confirmed, it must not have any licensing strings attached--it must be royalty free unless he meant this specific standard. Plenty of standards are encumbered by reasonable and customary licensing fees, and the companies involved in 802.15.3a had already signed or generally agreed to that as well. The 802.15.3a standard will allow 100 to 480 Mbps of wireless data to be exchanged at very short range, from 10 to 30 meters, with the design focused on large file and streaming media exchange....

Ingenta to Get All of the RSS Glory?

Ingenta to Get All of the RSS Glory? 06/08/2004 01:10 AM
Ingent a...in Front

"From an IT newsbreak from BQ:

'Early this autumn as the academic year starts for its many clients, Ingenta, Inc., the online distributor of academic journal literature and document delivery service, will replace its existing online research interfaces ”http://www.ingenta.com and http://www.ingentaselec t.com/”with IngentaConnect. The new interface will provide more reliability and scalability to handle rapid expansion of usage, which runs as high as 8 million user sessions a month on the two existing services. It will also support more access and authentication rules for the different business models used by Ingenta™'s over 260 publishers....'

Pretty cool, but check this out:

'New features scheduled for phasing in throughout the summer include enhanced personalization. For example, users will have the ability to subscribe to RSS feeds'

Hip Hip Hooray. Finally, a fee-based content provider for libraries providing RSS Feeds for their clientele. Before we go crazy here, I'd love to see exactly what they are offering. Anyone at Ingenta (who may read this) want to give me a test run, or any more information? [Library Stuff]

I had a long talk with the Proquest folks at the Texas Library Association conference, and they didn't have clue one about RSS. They promised to take the idea back to the mother ship so I gave them my business card, but I never heard anything back from them. All we need is one of these companies to start the domino effect, and it looks like Ingenta may be it.

The next issue will be for the folks that make the aggregators to step up to the plate with full authentication so that library patrons can authenticate in the background via their library card numbers.

The glory of frying

The glory of frying 12/19/2004 03:21 PM
I can't say I've really tried much frying at home, but according to the New York Times Minimalist, Mark Bittman, "[f]rying lends itself to home cooking..It does everything you want cooking to do. It makes food crisp, tender, gorgeous and golden." He says so in his article, Hot, Sizzling Temptations, Freshly Fried at Your Stove. Sadly, we've been trained to deny our love, even become ashamed of it, because frying is supposed to be unhealthy. And, the naysayers contend, it's a pain, it's expensive, and it's messy.Hogwash. Try it once, and you'll be hooked. And on your second try you will come pretty close to mastering the art of frying. Be sure to check along the sidebar for four frying recipes. I want to make the onion rings, yum!

On the glory of Brussels sprouts

On the glory of Brussels sprouts 12/19/2004 03:21 PM
I have been on a Brussels sprouts tear lately (see You do learn something new every day from earlier this month), eating them as much as possible. As is my way when I find something I love, I eat it non-stop until I almost grow sick of it. Luckily the season for the item usually passes before the damage is complete, and then I have nearly a year to recover. Case in point: bread salad. But I digress! Back to the sprouts... I've been preparing them at home in my skillet with brown butter, and I've thought them quite delicious. Imagine my surprise when I was out dining earlier this week at one of Manhattan's nicest restaurants and I was served Brussels sprouts with a dish -- and they were prepared just as I do them at home! That's given me the confidence to share my recipe with all you Brussels sprouts fans out there. Presenting Megnut's Brown Buttered Brussels Sprouts. For those that aren't fans, here is the sheet music to We Hate Brussels Sprouts. Perhaps you can write a lyrical accompaniment?
