Developers and users perspectives
Developers and users perspectives
12/02/2003 12:43 AMIf you’re a software developer, you need to understand the
perspective of people who use your software.
I ran across a good, small example of the difference between the two
perspectives, via an email from a NetNewsWire user. I mention it
because it might be illustrative of one of the ways developers and
users see things differently.
It also illustrates one law of UI design: don’t let the logical
and correct thing get in the way of the right thing.
Here’s the example:
When you import an OPML subscriptions file into NetNewsWire, if the
file is a valid OPML file but contains no subscriptions, NetNewsWire
doesn’t report an error.
It’s logical, no? It’s a valid subscriptions file, and
NetNewsWire successfully imported zero out of zero subscriptions.
But it’s not the right thing, because someone using the software
is left wondering what the hell just happened. An error message that
explains that the subscriptions file contained no subscriptions would
be the right thing to do.
So here’s another law of UI design: while developers see zero as
just another number, users often see zero as an error.

“Longhorn”
06/24/2005 07:24 PMMicrosoft Corp. today announced support for RSS (Really Simple
Syndication) in the next version of the Microsoft® Windows®
operating system, code-named “Longhorn.” The RSS functionality in
“Longhorn” is being designed to make it simple for end users to
discover, view and subscribe to RSS feeds, as well as make it easier
for developers to incorporate the rich capabilities of RSS into their
applications. In addition, Microsoft announced Simple List Extensions,
a set of extensions to RSS that can be used to enable Web sites to
publish lists such as of photo albums, music playlists and top 10
lists as RSS feeds. Microsoft is making the specification freely
available via the Creative Commons license, the same license under
which the RSS 2.0 specification was released. The announcement was
made in Seattle during Gnomedex 5.0, an annual conference for
technology enthusiasts and industry influentials that focuses on RSS,
blogging, podcasting and other new media models.

What proprietary software can teach open

04/12/2005 08:04 AMBeing the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know
of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly,
popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit
of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of
open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity
or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the
right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software
without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.

Companies Forget To Protect Against
Internal Computer Security Threats
09/23/2004 11:18 AMRemember the good old days when the majority of your computer security
threats came from inside the company? That went away as the internet
became the domain of more organized attempts at breaking down security
walls of almost every IP address imaginable. However, that doesn't
mean there aren't still threats from inside the firewall -- and it
looks like
many
companies still don't take insider threats seriously. Once again,
it sounds like a more
hybrid
approach to computer security might make sense. Rather than just
watching in one direction, keeping track of things both inside and
outside the network is becoming more important.
