According to the Wi-Fi Networking News, you can use inexpensive equipment right off the shelf and broadcast live television over a Wi-Fi connection! Crazy but true, here is how it was done; “We established a wireless connection through a local, public Wi-Fi network maintained by the non-profit NYC Wireless, and broadcast from that spot to a computer at MNN studios. The video and audio was captured by the camcorder and fed into the laptop, where…

Wither the Television?

Wither the Television? 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

Am I the only one whose television and DVD player is getting neglected these days? Lately, I've taken to watching both TV shows and DVD movies exclusively on my computer.

I don't have a really great set-up either. My monitor is a Gateway VX900T — a 19-inch Trinitron that I bought (used) five years ago. I also have an old Altec Lansing speaker system with a subwoofer that's so old I have to Scotch tape the input jack into the speaker.

What I do have going for me is a couch in my office on which I can sit about five feet from the monitor. This set-up and proximity is almost perfect for watching TV and movies on the computer.

I just watched "Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow" on DVD (great, great movie, by the way). That film was shot in digital, high defintion, and the resolution on my monitor was absolutely astonishing. The scene where Dex is escaping from the island and the Ark is launching in the background was so detailed it left me slack-jawed.

Television is just as good. I don't have a TV capture card, but that doesn't matter because I tend to just watch certain shows faithfully which I download. I've spoken he re before about my tendency to watch North Shore (more on this on my personal site), and I get spoiled because the torrents I download are all ripped from hi-def sources. Hi-def on computer monitors is amazing, and it leaves me disappointed when I have to actually watch the show on TV during its time slot.

Consequently to all of this, my television gets less and less use these days. Now, all I need is a remote control.

Social Television Networking

Social Television Networking 06/28/2004 05:22 AM
While lots of media companies have been trying to figure out how the whole "social networking" phenomenon impacts their business, it looks like AOL is trying to take the concept to the next level while also being true to their plans of "convergence." They've patented the concept of buddy list TV sharing. The idea is that you could see what your friends were watching on TV and immediately tune in yourself. It's not too hard to see how this would work. Already, the latest version of Yahoo Messenger includes the ability to see what music your friends are listening to and immediately tuning in yourself. This idea tries to go a bit further. For instance, someone could set up a chat room around a particular TV show, and could then play that show, while everyone else could discuss it in real-time. To understand what you're watching, it would require a set-top box that would tie into your internet connection as well. Of course, it's unclear how such a system will work in an age of TiVo when no-one watches a show at the same time.

The Whole Concept Of Television Is
Changing... Or Is It?

The Whole Concept Of Television Is
Changing... Or Is It?
11/13/2003 12:29 PM
Television hasn't really changed all that much over the past few decades, but a lot of things are happening in the space these days. People are increasingly interested in having a central digita l hub in their homes that will store and manage both television programs, and their own created content. The article points to a study done by the Internet Home Alliance (who isn't often shy about painting the picture they'd like to see for the future - which involves many of their member companies having lots of new products to sell). I don't think it's surprising that they found many people who claim they want a central digital video hub, but the actual implementation might not be so easy. Ignoring the whole broad cast flag issue, and how that might complicate this vision, such a device would need to work exceptionally well for it to gain traction. It's a pretty complex system, but would need to be easy to set up and easy to use, while still offering the functionality that people want. It's certainly possible, but it might take some time. At the same time, other studies are pointing out the fairly obvious fact that digital video recorders are going to change how television advertising works. Lots of people have been saying this for years, but the broadcast industry is finally coming to terms with it. Of course, they'll probably end up going the route of the recording and movie industries and make life more difficult for people, instead of embracing the new technology. Meanwhile, the NY Times is reporting that Sprint PCS is going to let people watch streaming TV on their mobile phones. At 2 frames per second. Two... Frames... Per... Second... That's not television. That's a bunch of still images, on a one inch screen - and knowing most streaming technology, they will probably be pretty blocky still images. Did I mention that it will also cost $10/month? Seems like a limited upside on that one. I'll probably have my home digital hub up and running before I'm watching TV on my mobile phone.

TeleBlaster TV set explodes television

TeleBlaster TV set explodes television 03/19/2005 03:02 AM
David Pescovitz: Moscow artist Aristarkh Chernyshev's TeleBlaster "is born to explode television." From the description at Electroboutique where you can buy a TeleBlaster set for $1499:
Catalog Images Teleblaster 22Its design repeats a blast, but it also stresses the fuctionality, which is the main thing here. TeleBlaster allows watching TV programs in different ways: as is, but also in a special mode of the signal processing. Users can load different effects algorithms from a flash-card or from the manufacturer website.

TeleBlaster allows mixing users' videofeed with a TV broadcast, and therefore gives unlimited possibilities for creativity: television becomes, literally, a Lego set from which users/watcher creates his/her own worlds.

Besides that, with TeleBlaster you can generate video effects synchronous to sound. This optio turns it into a specialized multimedia entertainment center.

Principal novelty of TeleBlaster is that it prvides its users with unique possibilities of control over information streams and gives an additional freedom of choices of TV watching modes. TeleBlaster rethinks the value of television and turns it into a great source of visual information and positive emotions.

New Approaches To Television Archiving

New Approaches To Television Archiving 03/17/2005 03:26 AM
New Approaches To Television Archiving by Jeff Ubois
ht tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/ubois/index.html

Abstract:
Worldwide, more than 30 million hours of unique television programming are broadcast every year, yet only a tiny fraction of it is preserved for future reference, and only a fraction of that preserved footage is publicly accessible. Most television broadcasts are simply lost forever, though television archivists have been working to preserve selected programs for fifty years. Recent reductions in the cost of storage of digital video could allow preservation of this portion of our culture for a small fraction of the worldwide library budget, and improvements in the distribution of online video could enable much greater collaboration between archival institutions.

So what does this mean to you well you will no longer be able to exercise your fair use rights to programming that you have paid for. All of you geeks out their and those worried about fair use need to check out the battle plan that the EFF has put together. [EFF's Digital Television Liberation Front]

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

One of the shiniest new feature of Java 5.0 (aka Java 1.5) is a rich set of concurrent programming classes in java.util.concurrent (aka JSR 166), much of which is a direct port of Doug Lea's Concurrent Programming in Java library.  Since I don't have the luxury of using Java 5.0 yet, I've resorted to using Doug's original library which is, for the most part, functionally equivalent to java.util.concurrent but not close enough for comfort, particularly since concurrency code tend to be very sensitive to minor changes.

The good news is that Dawid Kurzyniec backported java.util.concurrent package to run under Java 1.4 and made it available as open source.  Apparently Sun is letting this happen because it's own code is based on Doug's open source library.

There are some shortcomings but nothing much to cry over.  My only complaint is that it doesn't use the java.util.concurrent package name which means I'll have to update the package names later (simple but still change nonetheless).  But that I can see the technical and legal issues preventing that from happening.  I am just glad someone did this.
