It looks like the message is finally getting out about the problems of current e-voting systems. As California is looking to get rid of the unreliable machines, Ireland is now making noises about banning the machines as well. It's not that anyone is against the idea of electronic voting - but that the current way it's implemented is dreadful and raises all sorts of questions about whether or not your vote is actually being counted. Apparently, in Ireland, the Prime Minister has been pushing for such electronic voting for a while, but a commission is now recommending not to use the machines in their current form.

Just two weeks after a court ruling suggested that eBay was violating business model patents for online auctions and buying direct, the Patent Office has come out with an initial ruling invalidating one of the patents noting that it's an obvious idea. Of course, the patent review process is a long one, and the company, MercExchange, who owns the patent still gets a chance to respond. They also point to the recent court ruling, which seems like circular logic. The court said the patent should be considered, and the USPTO is saying the patent isn't valid. That should be the end of the equation, but MercExchange seems to think that the court trumps the Patent Office. Either way, there's a lot of money being spent on this mess -- and, if anything, this process reveals how ridiculous the system is. If the patent is invalid, why did it need to go through so many lawsuits and patent reviews to figure that out?

It's no secret that people put all sorts of confidential documents, spreadsheets and databases online without any protection when they shouldn't. It's also no secret that in using some basic keywords in a search string on Google you can dig up those files. Now, however, even the mainstream press is beginning to notice this issue, and the Washington Post is running a long article on the fact that people are searching for confidential nuggets of info via Google - and finding it all the time. What's interesting to me is that the backlash hasn't been stronger - though, maybe that's the next stage now that this story is going mainstream. I read the article half expecting people to blame either Google or the people doing the searching for the fact that this info was stored without any security whatsoever. Right now, though, most people seem to realize that the problem is with those who put the info online where they shouldn't.

...True, girls and women can still be imprisoned for going out without proper Islamic dress. But young people are completely redefining such dress so it heightens sex appeal instead of smothering it.

Women are required to cover their hair and to wear either a chador cloak or an overcoat, called a manteau, every time they go out, and these are meant to be black and shapeless. But the latest fashion here in Shiraz, in central Iran, is light, tight and sensual.

"There are some manteaus with slits on the sides up to the armpits," said Mahmoud Salehi, a 25-year-old manteau salesman. "And then there are the `commando manteaus,' with ties on the legs to show off the hips and an elastic under the breasts to accentuate the bust."

Worse, from the point of view of hard-line mullahs, young women in such clothing aren't getting 74 lashes any more — they're getting dates.
