Tim O'Reilly: Amazon Web Services API
Tim O'Reilly: Amazon Web Services API
07/21/2002 11:37 PMWeb sites like Amazon and Google are applications. And Microsoft has
demonstrated over and over again that a platform strategy beats an
applications strategy every time. Once you have other companies
building added value that relies on you, you have a kind of benign
industry lock in that's a real competitive advantage. (That's why I
bet that Microsoft's MapPoint eventually supplants AOL's MapQuest as
the dominant resource for geographic information. Unless AOL gets off
its duff and supports developers, of course.)

Using Amazon Web Services With PHP And
SOAP
11/11/2002 06:02 AMNow, your favourite language and mine, PHP, has recently started
shipping with support for XML-based remote procedure calls (including
SOAP) over HTTP. This makes PHP ideal for developers looking to
integrate Amazon Web Services into their Web applications. The only
problem? Not too many people know how to do it.
That's where this tutorial comes in. Over the next few pages, I'll be
demonstrating how you can use PHP, in combination with Amazon Web
Services, to add powerful new capabilities to your Web applications.
Take a look. -- icarus

Qwest Launches Tiered Services, Naked

Qwest Launches Tiered Services, Naked
DSL
02/17/2004 01:15 PMAn anonymous Qwest employee wrote in to mention that the company is
announcing plans to offer "naked DSL" - that is, DSL without requiring
local phone service. This is a big deal. We've been
complain
ing about DSL companies requiring that you have local phone
service with them to get DSL. Obviously, the advantages to them are
that they get more out of you - but as an increasingly tech savvy
population is ditching landlines for VoIP or cellular phones, this
policy was only pushing people to go to cable instead. Qwest, who has
not had the greatest reputation for service over the past few years,
appears to be trying to turn this around and go after the market of
folks who don't want to be tied down to a landline phone number they
won't want or use. They're also announcing
a new tiered
offering including the incredibly cheap $15/month plan - that caps
bandwidth at 256k. Not that fast, but for those who just want an
always on connection, it's a steal. This is clearly going directly
after the dialup user who hasn't decided to upgrade yet, but now has
almost no excuse not to.

A guide to VoIP and Asterisk
A guide to VoIP and Asterisk
06/05/2005 10:53 PMWith its low price, VoIP has become an attractive alternative to
traditional landlines. The possibilities seem endless: you can set up
virtual numbers, toll-free numbers, use softphone applications to call
from your PC, even make calls from your home phone when on the road.
While basic VoIP service can provide some of these features, the
open-source PBX application Asterisk allows you to configure your
phone system to your heart's content.
[Asterisk] supports VoIP in all three flavors: SIP,
h323, and IAX.Β It also supports a wide range of hardware that allows
you to terminate your Asterisk PBX from a POTS line to a
T1.
Confused by the alphabet soup? This guide will bring you up to
speed on VoIP lingo and help you to get your home or small business
network up in no time flat.

03/30/2005 06:15 PM

Asterisk is a hybrid TDM and packet voice PBX (Private Branch
eXchange) and IVR platform with ACD functionality. It acts as
middleware between the Internet (IAX, SIP, MGCP, Skinny, H.323),
telephony channels (like Zaptel, T1, PRI, E1, FXO, FXS, VoIP, VoFR,
ISDN, modems, Internet Phone Jack, etc.), and applications (like
voice-mail, conferencing, directories, MP3 players, intercoms, etc.).
It has many advanced features such as a codec translation API. The
base distribution includes several channel backends, as well as
applications. However, the beauty of Asterisk is its ability to be
extended using its APIs, dynamic module loader, and AGI scripting
interface. End users can even write their own applications that run on
the system in C or any scripting language of their choice.
