Storage peripheral maker Iomega Corp. on Tuesday introduced its Super DVD Writer 12x Dual-Format USB 2.0 Drive. The new DVD+RW/-RW drive ships with Mac and Windows software and supports dual-layer recordable (DVD+R DL) DVD media, enabling users to burn up to 8.5GB per disc. Supported formats include DVD+R and DVD+RW (12x4x10x write, rewrite, and read speeds), DVD-R and DVD-RW (8x4x10x), and CD-R and CD-RW discs (40x24x40x). Bundled Mac-compatible software includes Charismac Discribe and MusicMatch. The new drive costs US$249.95; it requires Mac OS X v10.2.7 or later and a G4 or higher with USB 2.0 connectivity. The company's Web site had not been updated with information about the new drive as MacCentral posted this article.

The DRU-710UL -- featuring the same mechanism used in Sony's currently shipping DRU-710A internal model -- is a 16x DVD+R recordable drive featuring USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces that comes with Roxio Toast 6.0.x. It can burn double-layer DVDs containing up to 8.5GB of data. The new drive burns DVD+R DL media at 2.4x and also supports DVD+R media at 16x, DVD-R at 8x, DVD±RW at 4x, CD-R at 48x and CD-RW media at 24x. AHEAD's Nero software for PCs is also included.

This new release adds Double-Layer (DL) support, enabling users of supported DVD-R drives to create discs that can store up to 8GB of data. EZQuest has announced the release of its latest Boa optical drive, a 16X DVD+/-R FireWire drive that writes to CDs and DVDs, including 8.5GB dual layer DVDs. Write speeds are 4X for DVD+R dual layer and DVD+/-RW, 16X for DVD+/-R, 24X for CD-RW and 32X for CD-R. The new Boa drive comes in two versions, one with Toast Lite and Dantz Retrospect for US$199 and one with Toast Titanium 6 and Dantz Retrospect for $259. Both require Mac OS X v10.2.8, a G4 running at 500MHz and 512MB RAM. In addition, an internal model that ships with Toast 6.0 and Dantz Retrospect is available for $139. It needs a G3 running at 266MHz (a G4 is required for authoring), Mac OS X v10.2 and 512MB RAM.

MCE Technologies on Monday shipped Lucid M8X, a portable FireWire 400 DVD drive compatible with DVD+/-R/RW and CD-R/RW media, including Dual-Layer DVD+R discs. It can write Dual-Layer media at 2.4x speed and the various flavors of single-layer DVD discs at 8x speed, with CD-R and CR-RW burn speeds as fast as 24x. It can draw power over any FireWire port except those that are added on through a CardBus or PCI slot; the latter requires an AC adapter, which is sold separately. Toshiba Corp. is working towards doubling the storage capacity of its 0.85-inch hard-disk drive, it said Wednesday. The drive is physically the smallest available from any disk drive maker. It went into mass production earlier this year and can store up to 2GB of data in its first-generation form. Toshiba is currently working on a new version that will include two disk platters, allowing it to store up to 4GB of data, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in Tokyo.

While we try not to keep it too geeky here, because that would be the easiest way to expose what a fraud I am bore you, this little script from John Muehlhausen is too useful to pass over. It lets you, with a tiny bit of Python wrangling, add Iridium paging failover to compliment your existing pager, meaning you'll have pager service anywhere in the world without cresting the 150 page-a-month limit of Iridium-only service.

Of course, you would have to wear two pagers and look sort of dorky, but if you're already telling your computer to page you via a Python script you're probably well past the gadget dork threshold (and good on you).

Oh, and it's not limited to Iridium, either, so you could tweak to support a second terrestrial pager, so that if a message never makes it to the first pager, a second person could be contacted. SNPP is useful stuff.
