theodp writes "What do you call it when three IE buttons on the Windows Taskbar disappear and are replaced with a single 'group' IE button when you open a fourth IE window? Annoying? Nope. The correct answer is U.S. patent no. 6,756,999, granted to Microsoft Tuesday for a Method and system for clustering and grouping taskbar buttons." Indeed, this is one of the very first things that I make sure to turn off on any Windows box that I end up using.

Disney asks FCC to lock up all the

Disney asks FCC to lock up all the
record-buttons
08/07/2004 05:31 AM
Digging through some FCC filings, my cow-orker Fred von Lohmann turned up a bit of Disney magic that tips the company's hand: they're planning to lock up everything capable of recording audio.
Well, in their latest comments, Disney (which is an RIAA member, and owns ABC Radio Networks and four record labels) let slip what this is all about:

In addition, to the extent the Commission considers such a content protection mechanism, it should also consider whether to extend that mechanism to all music distribution platforms, including satellite digital audio radio service, the Internet and broadcast radio service.

Got that? Disney wants the FCC to regulate all devices capable of recording from any audio broadcasting medium or from the Internet. FM radio, XM, Sirius, Streamripper, Total Recorder, you're all in the crosshairs. It's the Hollings Bill all over again.

An Actual SOLUTION to Spam?

An Actual SOLUTION to Spam? 07/12/2004 12:54 PM

Spam. No matter what you do, it just keeps coming. The more you filter, the more aggressive it gets, until some days you start to feel like you're going to drown in the deluge.

Microsoft and Yahoo, among others, have been promoting fixes to basic mail handling protocols to (theoretically) solve the problem, but it will be 2005 at the earliest before we see how they work.

Is there anything you can do today?

Possibly -- a Challenge/Response system might be just the thing to turn the tide.

It's a drastic solution, but could it be right for you? This review of MailBlocks Challenge/Response system may just have the answer.

The Apartment Phone (No, The Actual
Building)

The Apartment Phone (No, The Actual
Building)
07/09/2004 05:12 AM
Well, if this isn't a Friday "Too Much Free Time" story, I'm not sure what is. An eccentric Australian millionaire nicknamed "Crazy John" for a popular chain of mobile phone retail shops (Crazy Eddie should sue -- though after his problems with the law, he may not want to go anywhere near a court room) now wants to use some of his millions to build an apartment building in the shape of a mobile phone -- complete with number buttons, "end" and "send" buttons, and a "rooftop" antenna. He hasn't chosen what phone the building will look like, but is hoping that a handset maker will pop up and sponsor the project in return for the landmark advertising. Of course, at the rate handset designs go out of style, this certainly could be risky. Who would really want to live in an obsolete mobile phone shaped building? Also, what would happen if the eventual sponsor wanted it in the shape of a clamshell flip phone?

VCs Back To Funding Actual Startups

VCs Back To Funding Actual Startups 07/27/2004 11:14 AM
It looks like venture capitalists are finally willing to actually bet a little of that money they've been hoarding on actual startups. Rather than focusing just on C-round and higher deals, last quarter more than 30% of the deals went to "early stage" companies. This seems to match with what most people in the startup world have been saying lately. Of course, the VCs are still complaining that they actually have to compete for deals these days, but it's about time they realized that if everyone else in the world has to compete, so should they.

Scrollwheel, Bluetooth Brings Apple

06/25/2004 08:53 AM

mousebt_240_1.jpg imageMacMice has updated their 'The Mouse' -- you know, the one that adds a right click and a scrollwheel to an Applesque mouse -- now incorporating Bluetooth, to come up with The Mouse BT. But they're not late to market, no. Instead, they took their time to "eliminate many of the annoying shortcomings that are present in earlier BT mice."

You know, I actually saw one of these The Mouses the other day in person (a corded one, not the Bluetooth model) and they really look a lot better in person than they do on their website. Something about their photos makes the acrylic shell look rough, but it really isn't when you actually see it.
