Stop Focusing On The Technology, Focus
On How It's Useful
02/11/2004 04:14 PMWe've mentioned this before, but the whole focus on "blogging" itself
seems to get too much attention, compared to what it's actually
useful for. Over on the
corporate side of Techdirt where
we provide daily information and analysis to companies - in the form
of a blog - we tend not to use the word "blog" unless we know we're
dealing with people who are quite familiar with the term. We've found
that it focuses the conversation in the wrong direction. In fact, a
large percentage of our customers
have no clue what a blog is
even though they're using one every day. It appears that the folks at
Disney have realized the same thing. Tim Bishop has a great post
talking about how
Disney started using blogs, RSS and
aggregators by making sure no one heard those three words at all.
Instead, they made them fit into existing structures and processes -
just making them much more useful. Ross Mayfield has
more
details.

Microsoft Focusing Office Suite On Web
Services
Microsoft Focusing Office Suite On Web
Services
08/22/2004 03:16 PMMicrosoft, seeing it's growth beginning to slow in the office sector,
plans to reinvent the way people work, communicate and collaborate on
projects by retuning it's Office Suite toward web services.
"Office defines business productivity," Bill Gates,
Microsoft's chairman, told financial analysts in July. "The
productivity area is probably the most important franchise that we
have." Microsoft is banking on the Office initiative to help it
fend off the challenge from open source software and other
competitors.
"Microsoft is trying to make Office less a product and more like
an online service," said Nate Root, an analyst for Forrester
Research. "Adoption is going to be slow because Microsoft is
trying to change the paradigm. It's a fundamental cultural change in
how people think of and use Office." Because the next version of
Windows, called Longhorn, may not ship until 2007, analysts say, the
Office overhaul is needed in the meantime to deliver more Web services
technology to the desktop. The new capabilities in the Office system
are also needed to lure software developers to create more
applications that run on Microsoft products.
Challengers like Sun Microsystems' StarOffice, OpenOffice.org and the
Open Source Applications Foundation offer free or very inexpensive
alternatives to Microsoft's Office programs. At the same time,
Microsoft faces strong competitors in the collaboration field. IBM
(NYSE: IBM) , for example, has sold Web conferencing, Web-based work
spaces and other software for years, and leads in some market
segments.

Guidelines for panel presenters
Guidelines for panel presenters
02/01/2005 08:42 PMSteve Boback sent this
around to the Blog
Business Summit presenters. I thought it was pretty
salient.....
Based on my experience, various critical posts made by attendees of
previous blog conferences, and reading/listening to the transcripts
and session recordings available from other blog events, I have some
culled some guidelines largely based on comments from attendees at
other conferences.
* AIM HIGH: Attendees will forgive sessions that contain a
significant percentage of new or unfamiliar material. They will be
merciless if you teach them "stuff I already knew".
* PRAGMATIC INFO: The one main thing I'd like to emphasize is that
we should all present information that helps people execute on
better--more profitable business blogging NOW. Our audience wants
tools and techniques that they can leverage asap when they get back to
the office. For example, let's not talk too much about what protocols,
platforms, or standards SHOULD win various standards battles. Please
focus on how to use (today) the ones that WILL win. Our audience
doesn't have time and $$ to spend on investing in "great" and/or
"future" technologies and then end up being orphaned. As we have all
learned the hard way, "best" does not necessarily mean "enduring".
* HOW-TO FOCUS: This is a how-to event. At all costs avoid the
tendency to fall into the trap of talking about how cool this all is,
how we can all change the world, or any subject that veers out of the
how-to arena. There is no shortage of conferences that will
pontificate, self-congratulate, and debate for hours on how blogs can
liberate humanity and eliminate global warming. This is not one of
them.:)
* AVOID THE ECHO CHAMBER: This conference is about bloggers
teaching effective businesses-related strategies and tactics, not so
much about bloggers talking to bloggers about blogging. That being
said, bloggers that successfully provide
sales/marketing/pr/collaborative benefits to businesses have a lot to
tell those bloggers that aspire to do the same. One key note to
remember--if something has already been said by someone on the podium,
avoid repeating it.
* TALKING ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS/SERVICES: It's like salt on a steak.
A very small amount carefully applied can be okay. More than just a
touch and the whole thing tastes pretty bad. People hate paying for a
commercial. A slide at the beginning and a mention at the end are
about it, in our experience.
* CUT TO THE DEMO: Show. Don't just tell. Get out of PowerPoint
(or
whatever) and *demonstrate* what you're talking about.
* REPEAT THE QUESTION: With questions from the audience, repeat the
question. This is a constant complaint from attendees. It also allows
you to recast a problematic question in your own terms.
* DON'T GET SIDETRACKED: Wait for questions until the end. If you
get a specialized or off-topic question, don't get sidetracked. Recast
the question or ask the person to see you after the session.
* DON'T ARGUE: If you're participating in a panel, don't fight.
Don't be acrimonious. People generally like it when speakers disagree
in an informative, interesting way. They hate it when they argue.
* CROSS REFERENCE. Please attend other conference sessions and
refer to them in your presentations. It puts your content in context
and avoids repetition. Give your attendees cross-refs to other
sessions.
* STAY ON TIME: Start and end on time. We keep to a *strict*
timetable, and we'll have the hook ready. Attendees really like it
when we stay on schedule. Also, do not end your session more than 2-3
minutes before the allotted time.

04/26/2004 02:02 AMNetGear WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router is $37 after discount and $20
mail-in rebate: We don't like to highlight deals unless they're quite
remarkable. If you've been looking to upgrade to 802.11g and swear
that you'll send the rebate in, you can buy NetGear's home-oriented
gateway for $37 net. If you use Amazon.com's slow shipping in the
U.S., there's no fee for dispatching it to you. NetGear is pushing its
faster line of "108" Mbps gear, and this rebate probably reflects a
desire to move out plain (but compatible) 802.11g devices. You can
also get a bargain on a D-Link 802.11b access point, as Amazon is
selling the DI-514 Wireless 802.11b Cable/DSL Router for about $17.50
after a $30 mail-in rebate....

"Wireless Travel Router," the WGR101, a pint-sized 802.11g device
designed to provide WiFi in hotel rooms or anywhere else you might
need it. A built in "double firewall" provides security in addition to
64 or 128-bit WEP and (when they get the drivers done, it looks like)
WPA upgradeable. No idea what sort of coverage range it will provide,
but if you need a WiFi router you can toss in a bag, the 0.7 x 2.3 x
3.4 inch WGR101 can be had for about 100 bucks.

Tom's Networking Reviews NetGear MIMO
Router
Tom's Networking Reviews NetGear MIMO
Router
04/11/2005 01:03 PM Tim Higgins of Tom's Networking offers his exhaustive look at the
NetGear RangeMax Wireless Router: This device uses Atheros's Super G
technology combined with Video54's multiple antenna approach. The
folks at Airgo say that Video54's MIMO isn't MIMO because it doesn't
support spatial multiplexing (multiple signals taking different paths
over the same frequencies). Video54 says multiple antennas are
multiple antennas; they're using a phase-array approach per packet in
which each packet can be sent through a different antenna combination.
The device has a street price of just $118, far below its "true MIMO"
competitors. Higgins thinks that the device delivers on some but not
all of its claims, and that because four different technologies are
involved (three from Atheros then Video54 on top) he has some issues
with the simplicity of it, too. He doesn't know which technologies
need to be turned on, off, or changed in order to achieve the best
results with that combination. That's a key advantage for the True
MIMO line of products using Airgo chips: it's essentially one
technology that wraps around all these ideas while delivering better
results....
